Coulter’s plagiarism problem

Accusations about plagiarism have dogged Ann Coulter for weeks, but now it’s far more serious for the syndicated anti-American columnist and author.

Well, Ann Coulter may be “liberal” in one respect, anyway. The New York Post reported Sunday that author/columnist Coulter “cribbed liberally in her latest book” and also in several of her syndicated columns, according to a plagiarism expert.

John Barrie, creator of the iThenticate plagiarism-probing system, claimed he found at least three examples of what he called “textbook plagiarism” in the new Coulter book “Godless” after he ran its text through the program.

He also discovered verbatim copying in Coulter’s weekly column, which is syndicated to more than 100 newspapers by Universal.

Apparently, the theft was frequently blatant. In one instance, she plagiarized a 1991 Heritage Foundation about NEA-funded art. In another, Coulter stole a 48-word passage from an L.A. Times article. For that matter, in her most recent “book,” Coulter includes citations for some of the work that came from other sources, but according to Dr. Barrie, Coulter’s “sloppiness in failing to properly attribute many other passages strips it of nearly all its academic merits.”

I know; it is amusing to see the words “Coulter” and “academic merits” in the same sentence.

Regardless, I hate to get optimistic about such things, but this could be a career killer. News outlets don’t seem to mind giving a forum to far-right bombthrowers who recommend killing war heroes or joke about murdering Supreme Court justices, but editors and publishers tend to disapprove when writers steal other writers’ words. It’s usually a deal-breaker.

Who did she plagarize?

Couldn’t be this guy could it?

I actually did laugh when I read Dr. Barrie’s comments. Here’s hoping you’re right about publishing her.

Getting dangerously close to “hoist with [her] own petard.” And I will cite my source: Hamlet, William Shakespeare.

  • Brian – great site!!!

I apparently don’t know my Coulter from my Hitler getting only 6 right. I will wear it as a badge of honor though as I think that the fewer you get right, the scarier Coulter is.

  • Um, if Coulter has not been shunned and laughed off the national stage based upon the content of her “writings” (copying and pasting) what makes anyone think that plagerism will make any difference. Can;t you hear it now? “Sure she did a sloppy job of citing her sources but that is just a technical oversight imposed by liberal institutions like the media and academics. The point is, she was right and we need to poison Justive Stevens ASAP!”

Really, I think you are getting too optimistic. Ann being Ann, there is nothing so evil that her employers and supporters won’t tolerate. After all, she’s their shrill alarm against all the dangers of liberalism in America. That forgives her everything.

And that’s the fundemental point, isn’t it? That to these Theocratic Reactionaries, anything THEY do is okay because it is forgivable, ’cause they have their version of Jesus on their side. The version that doesn’t care about good works or caring for the poor or COMFORTING WIDOWS. Nope, just the one who suffered and died and rose again and all they have to do is believe in him and all their sins (no matter how many, how often, how consistent, or how egregious) will be forgiven.

Just consider Jimmy Swaggert, claiming forgiveness after it was discovered that he asked his favorite whore to pimp her teenage daughter to him.

    Goes around, comes around.

Karma is bad news for all Bu$hCo. Republicans.
I just wish there was a faster acting version that could totally devastate the Bubble before November 06.

  • We can hope that Ann “cut-and-paste” Coulter will get her comeuppance, but I have my doubts. When someone’s accused of plagiarism, what do they have at stake? Why, their reputation and credibility as someone with intellectual integrity. Ann doesn’t have anything to lose. I think the only thing that could cause her problems is if the sources she plagiarized make a big deal about it.

  • Coulter’s “9-11 widows” comment may have demonstrated to the loony right that she’d outlived her usefulness. Coulter has been criticized for plagiarism and research sloppiness for all of her previous books and many of her columns before now, and she’s walked away with career intact. The fact that a Rupert Murdoch media outlet has begun criticizing her may be all that’s needed to push her to early “retirement.” There are plenty of other scrawny, venomous right-wing harpies to take her place.

  • Mr. CB, you ARE getting WAY too optomistic; after all, the first rule that trumps all other rules for Rethugs today and their minions is: IOKIYAR.

    Please make a note of it…. 🙂

  • Heck, the following is so well-written and spot on accurate…
even I am tempted plagiarize it:

“News outlets don’t seem to mind giving a forum to far-right bombthrowers who recommend killing war heroes or joke about murdering Supreme Court justices, but editors and publishers tend to disapprove when writers steal other writers’ words. It’s usually a deal-breaker.”

  • “I know; it is amusing to see the words “Coulter” and “academic merits” in the same sentence.”

LOL.. This has to be the best quip I’ve heard in a long time.

  • Back in the days when editors and publishers were editors and publishers, I’d agree with you. Deal-breaker.

But when term papers are routinely bought on-line, when “news” outlets are judged by how much of the great unwashed they keep entertained, when celebrity gossip trumps informed opinion about important events, I’m afraid we’re beyond reality, beyond the looking glass, down the rabbit hole. Coulter would fit right in with the Red Queen’s court.

  • Coulter will find herself fighting the nightmare scenario before long: the “two-front war.” On the one side, publishers and print-media outlets will begin to stop carrying her writings, and on the other side, her speaking engagements will begin to dry up, as plagiarism is still the one cardinal sin for which there can be no forgiveness whatsoever. Even the freakazoids at FAUX-NEWS will have a hard time justifying her continued presence in their midst—especially now that their ratings are heading for the journalistic sewer-pipe….

  • I don’t know — I just read the Post article and it didn’t sound all that damning with respect to her book. It seemed to have just found two 25-word or so passages where she had changed a word or so. For an entire book, that doesn’t sound unreasonable to me. Didn’t I read that in her last book, she made up quotes from newspapers that didn’t exist? Now that’s damning.

On the other hand, when half of a weekly column is cribbed from a piece done 15 years earlier — that’s very substantial.

  • After taking that quiz posted in the first comment, she might as well just rip off Hitler.

57% right. Not bad, but scary.

  • Horse-Face Annie will likely not get the big stage she has been used to, but let us recall that Ben Domenech was so seriously whacked with plagiarism that he was dropped within 72 hours by the Washington Post this past April. He immediately found “other employment” and I believe he is still pulling down a substantial income as an “editor” at Regnery. The Right takes care of its own, and the (spiritual) great-granddaughter of Julies Streicher will be, too. While we may not hear further of her in Reality World, she will continue to thrive in FantasyLand.

  • Perhaps this will be Ann’s Al Capone moment. While the Feds couldn’t get Scarface for his murderous ways, they eventually brought him down on tax evasion charges. I’d prefer it if media outlets like NBC rejected Coulter based on the outrageousness of her opinions, but if it takes proof of plagiarism and voting violations to shut her up, I’m okay with that.

  • Coulter will be around as long as you guys keep commenting on her.

As for the plagiarism charge, that one won’t stick unless it is blatant. She’s already considered a clown of sorts in the political commentary business. I just don’t think people are going to think too much about it. People don’t watch her because they respect her. They watch her because she is an accident waiting to happen.

And that’s why the networks will keep having her on… Because you folks are guaranteed to watch.

  • Don’t be silly. If this starts to be a major story, then Annie will simply come out with a new outrageous comment, all the newsmedia will start covering it, and how absurd it is, and the plagiarism story will get buried.

After all, that’s what she did when the papers started picking up on her felonious voting frauds — minor felonies sure, but felonies. As soon as they got too close, it was ‘Murtha is the reason why they invented fragging’ and everybody forgot the voting fraud.

She really IS “The Deaf Woman” (Ed McBain fans will get the reference). Her comments are distractions, and deliberately so. Can anyone imagine anyone else getting away with a book 1/3 of which was a defence of Dembski-style “Intelligent” Design and an attack on evolution? Every paper in the country would have pilloried the author and exposed how nonsensical her arguments were.

But she let off her “Jersey Girl” stinkbomb, everybody ran to cover that, and most of the articles on the book haven’t even mentioned her Creationism. Which means that the people who bought her book and look at that section, and who don’t have any background on the subject, will be exposed to Dembskism unrefuted. “Gee, if what she said was so bad here, why didn’t the papers cover it? Maybe she got this one right.”

Do NOT think the woman is a buffoon. She’s both extremely clever and extremely dangerous. (And don’t fall for another one of her traps, and make comments about her supposed ‘mannishness.’ She’s really setting you up on this one. “Liberals say they are so tolerant and acceptant of sexual deviants. Right, when they agree with them. When they don’t, they are just as bigoted as they accuse Conservatives of being.” It’s not true, but it gives her a GREAT weapon.)

  • what mencken said, what josef goebels said. the hate monger ann coulter will be more popular than ever. no one who admires her could be disuaded of her “charms” for her commission of any crimes. the more vile she is, the more popular. rush limbaugh, after being convicted of drug crimes that would have landed just about anyone else in prison, is still free, living in luxury. hate is as hate does.

  • I get a kick you guys who are proud of yourselves for doing poorly on the Coulter/Hitler test. If I couldn’t tell Michael Moore from Lenin, I wouldn’t boast about it. I’d take it as a sign that the other side is right to think I’m stupid. But, then, how could that occur to you, since you’re….

  • Jim,

You need to re-read the comments, no one states they could not tell Moore from Lennin, maybe that did not occur to you, well, because you’re . . .
