Cunningham to plead guilty

It can be a challenge keeping track of all the Republican office-holders who are under investigation and/or facing criminal charges, but important to remember Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham (R-Calif.). As you may recall, Cunningham sold his house to a military contractor with business before his committee for an inflated price, ultimately leading to a $700,000 gift for the lawmaker. Shortly thereafter, Cunningham helped direct tens of millions of dollars in defense appropriations to the same contractor, whose luxurious yacht Cunningham also happened to live on, rent-free.

When the story broke, Cunningham conceded that the circumstances surrounding his dealings raised “fair” questions, but he insisted that he hadn’t done anything wrong. It looks like his story is about to change.

Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham will plead guilty to tax violations, a person close to the investigation of the California Republican has told The Associated Press.

Cunningham has been under investigation since his sale of his home to a defense contractor at an apparently inflated price in 2003 attracted the attention of federal investigators.

A hearing in the case was scheduled in federal court in San Diego on Monday, and two people close to the investigation said Cunningham would enter a guilty plea. One of those people said he would plead to tax violations related to the home sale.

The LA Times reported that Cunningham called some of his closest political supporters last night to tell them, “It’s over. I can’t fight anymore.”

There are still details that haven’t been reported yet, but I suspect this guilty plea was part of a deal. After all, tax law violations were hardly the most serious crime Cunningham was alleged to have committed. This was a story of fairly obvious bribery of a member of Congress.

That said, a conviction is a conviction. I wonder which of Cunningham’s colleagues will be next?

Update: In an expanded AP account, Cunningham’s plea appears to go well beyond just tax evasion.

Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham pleaded guilty Monday to conspiracy and tax charges, admitting taking $2.4 million in bribes in a case that grew from an investigation into the sale of his home to a wide-ranging conspiracy involving payments in cash, vacations and antiques.

Cunningham, 63, entered pleas in U.S. District Court to charges of conspiracy to commit bribery, mail fraud and wire fraud, and tax evasion for underreporting his income in 2004.

Cunningham answered “yes, Your Honor” when asked by U.S. District Judge Larry Burns if he had accepted bribes from someone in exchange for his performance of official duties.

Update 2: Cunningham resigned from Congress after pleading guilty.

Update 3: The lead headline on CNN.com right this minute reads, “Crooked congressman admits receiving bribes.” That’s unusually strong language — and it’s completely appropriate given the circumstances.

It would be rather fitting if many of these clowns in the GOP crime family go down the same way Al Capone and other mobsters went down. GOP: Our Modern Mafia.

  • Too bad he didn’t fail to eject successfully from his airplane back in 1972. He could have died in the explosion and been a plaster hero with his name on a wall for eternity.

If you want to see how this stuff today is entirely in character with his entire life, google “The Unofficial Randy Cunningham Page” and see what his fellow naval aviators thought (and think) of him. Normally, in the US Navy, when a junior officer does what he did (become an “ace”), and they keep their nose clean, Rear Admiral is guaranteed. He retired at 20 years as a Commander – to do that, you have to have a lot of very senior people actively dislike you and have a reputation as a screwup, which he most assuredly did.

I guess all the plastic modelers who have built “Showtime 100” over the years are going to have to “re-think things.”

I met him to do an interview back when he was “the last ace still on active duty.” It took about ten minutes to come to the conclusion that the proper response to this news is “it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.” Good news indeed.

  • The problem with crime networks such as the Republicans have been so proud of themselves for creating up to now is that when one link in the chain implodes, it starts to unravel more and more of the threads that make it up.

Cunningham sang like a bird, like Libby and Scanlon and all the rest who will follow. The only question is who will be the next co-conspirator to go down. I can hardly wait.

  • This stinks…there is so much more to this than a simple tax charge. Go to to see what I mean.

The guy is totally dirty, and has been for some time. This is a slap on the wrist and a slap in the face to ALL the citizens of his district!

  • Geebus God Almighty! I just read the update. The depth of his decent into the political slime pit must have been truly breathtaking. To meekly just say, “Yes, Your Honor” to some really heinous charges is about as low as a person can sink. And it’s all on the record, so this is going to get really good.

  • Brick by brick all of the last 12 years will come crashing down. Hopefully innocents will not be caught up in the dust cloud.

Whether we will be able to rebuild is another question.

  • Who knew CNN could actually tell it like it really is? Ususally, they are such pansies when it comes to their headlines.

  • I felt a little sorry for him, watching him on television. Of course, I don’t know what brought him to the point he was at — I suppose it probably was a deal — but it seemed unusual for a politician to plead guilty and to seem honestly ashamed of himself. Not the kind of thing DeLay would ever consider. I wonder if some Republican congressmen really do have souls?

  • Quote of the Day

The Hill “Duke Cunningham is a hero,” DeLay said during a press briefing Tuesday. “He is an honorable man of high integrity.”

I guess there is honor among thieves.

  • That should read: As Kos says…..

I don’t need to rely on Kos to tell me this, although it would be nice if he’d proof read my posts.

  • Carpetbagger- who was it that uncovered him? Although I don’t keep up with the LA Times, it seems like you were one of the first ones to draw attention to it on the blogs that I keep up with. I feel like our national news media is letting us down. What else are they failing to find out???
