Darfur

Regular readers know that The Carpetbagger Report is a member of the Coalition for Darfur, a bi-partisan online initiative created to raise awareness and resources to address the crisis. The Coalition did not produce a post this week, but instead is focusing attention on the work of Smith College Professor Eric Reeves, who has written a series for The New Republic this week designed to be a “weeklong crash-course on Darfur.” It’s definitely worth reading.

* Part 1 — Why the genocide started, how it is being carried out, and whether it is getting worse

* Part 2 — What motivates the Sudanese government (racism, Islamism); and whether we should call Darfur a genocide (we should)

* Part 3 — The current mechanics of human destruction in Darfur; the controversy over mortality totals; and Darfur’s future in the absence of intervention

* Part 4 — The feckless international response

* Part 5 — What should be done (Part 5 will be posted in a few hours)

In addition, I’d also encourage readers to check out the American Progress Action Fund’s BeAWitness campaign, which has produced an excellent video as part of a broader initiative to generate more attention and reporting on the genocide occurring in Sudan.

Thanks for posting this. I have been following this series.
