Decrying ‘playing politics’ with the troops’ service

In light of the McCain campaign’s ridiculous new ad, the Obama campaign is sending around a speech John McCain delivered on the Senate floor in May 2007:

“How can we possibly find honor in using the fate of our servicemen to score political advantage in Washington? There is no pride to be had in such efforts. We are at war, a hard and challenging war, and we do no service for the best of us — those who fight and risk all on our behalf — by playing politics with their service.”

“How can we possibly find honor in using the fate of our servicemen to score political advantage in Washington?” How, indeed.

On a related note, Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, a conservative Republican who joined Barack Obama for the Middle East portion of last week’s trip, was asked this morning about the new McCain ad, as well as McCain’s assertion this week that Obama deliberately hopes for a U.S. military defeat. Hagel, a long-time McCain ally and the former co-chairman of McCain’s first presidential campaign, is unimpressed by his friend’s outrageous conduct.

“I think John is treading on some very thin ground here when he impugns motives and when we start to get into, ‘You’re less patriotic than me. I’m more patriotic.’ I admire and respect John McCain very much. I have a good relationship. To this day we do. We talk often. I talked to him right before I went to Iraq, as a matter of fact. John’s better than that.”

On the new ad, Hagel added, “I do not think it was appropriate.”

As for McCain being “better than that,” I used to hope so. In fact, I actually expected McCain to at least pretend to be better than this beyond the month of July.

No such luck.

JSMcC*nt has no time to waste. A totally unworthy man has stolen the nomination of the Democratic party away from J’s friend Hillary Clinton and looks like he’s going to bambuzle the American people into voting for him just because Boy George II has done such a suck-a$$ job of running the country. Now, eight years after he ought to already be President, J has to use any tactic, tell any lie, embrace any slimeball to win, or at least keep close enough in the polls so that Diebold can steal the election in November for him.

And this is because Barack Obama is totally unworthy…
… because he wouldn’t work with JSMcC*nt on ONE bill.

And thus is the last of our democracy totally shredded because of the spite of one disfunctional adulterous egotistical man.

  • I thought the election, in the end, would be close simply because of some long established good will towards John McCain. He grows more repulsive by the day.

Its clear he has nothing to offer. Nothing. He seems confused or completely blank at times when asked about issues. He changes with the wind and can’t even give adequate lip-service to his about-faces. He seems to be floundering in confusion.

I still say those debates will be a real eye opener.

  • A week in the outer banks without TCBR. I might not return sane. I have wingnut in-laws we vacation (if you can call it that) with.

Please keep up the good work all.

  • Good luck Lance. I know just exactly how you feel. You might try pity as an antidote to their stupidity.

  • Notice that Hagel mentioned on Face the Nation this morning that he had talked with McCain just before he went to the Middle East with Obama. So, that is exactly how McCain knew what Obama’s schedule for his Middle East trip was that he divulged to the press. His defense for what he said was something, like “it was only a guess, I would have no way of knowing the schedule.” Yeah, sure.

  • Hey, Lance,

You can stop with the gatutious slams at Hillary Clinton now (a lifelong liberal progressive with a 95%+ lifetime Senate voting record – just like her friend and colleague’s, Senator Obama).

Have you ever heard of “moving on?” This might be a good time to get some help (I recommend herbal cures of all kinds), and divest yourself of the residual bitterness and immaturity that gratingly infests your posts, especially in light of what I (and most veteran observers feel) was a relatively friendly primary campaign despite the unprecedented closeness of the race.

  • “John’s better than that.” — Hagel

Once or twice, ok, but when McCain keeps taking the sewers beneath the low road, he isn’t “better than that.” “That” is what he is.

  • Mr. Keep ‘Em in Iraq for 100 Years, Don’t Educate Them & Ration VA Benefits, isn’t worthy of cleaning a wounded soldier’s bed pan.

The only good thing about this pandering sack of shit is he’s providing so much fodder for Camp Obama’s ad writing team.

  • Yeah, me thinks the troops are behind Senator Obama – and no amount of spin is gonna change that.

P.S. Wonder how Gen. Patraeus is taking the news that his Presidency is coming to a premature end? lol lol lol

  • Text at the bottom of the screen during Candy Crowley’s CNN report just now on Obama’s Iraq visit: “OBAMA OVERRULES MILITARY. IGNORES MILITARY ADVICE ON IRAQ”

This is from Lou Dobbs this week, so I guess we know their bias.

  • I abhor John McCain for his flip-flop on torture, which Time tried to frame as NOT a flip-flop in its apologia.

McCain is simply a wimp, a twit, I believe, who has no core beliefs or principles.

  • I wonder why McCain did not visit Landstuhl when he was in Europe in March, it is a short trip from London or Paris.

  • McCain sold his soul to Rove, Bush, Cheney and the religious right to be president; now he is just a lapdog, puppet spewing forth whatever talking points they give him each day. cleve

  • As for McCain being “better than that,” I used to hope so. In fact, I actually expected McCain to at least pretend to be better than this beyond the month of July. — CB

I used to think McCane *was* better than that. I used to think he was, actually, a decent human being. As things stand now, I have come to believe that, either:
evil trolls came, snatched the real McCain and replaced him with one of their own foul babies (something they used to do on a regular basis, throughout the Middle Ages, though they usually picked on infants, not grown men. OTOH, McCain *does look* like a — constipated — baby),
    or:
I hadn’t been paying enough attention to McCain before.

    colonpowwow, @9

You mistake, sir! Lance had been a faithful Hillarite until he *did* move on, when she lost the primaries. But her regard for McCain (and, presumably, vice versa) is not a secret, dirty or otherwise. Who knows, McCain *might* have been able to run a civil campaign if she had been his opponent. Especially if she managed to drink him under the table again as, I think, she had done once (in Russia?)

  • The latest Gallup tracking poll has Obama up 9 points, 49-40. That tells you most everything you need to know about why McCain is now playing politics with troops’ service.

  • Perhaps we will finally learn if a relentless campaign of negativity actually works. So far the Rovarians have nothing to offer except “Obama bad”. McSame, of course, has nothing at all to offer. He’s in so far over his head a deep sea rescue squad couldn’t haul him out. But the last two “elections” have demonstrated none of that matters. Propaganda uber alles. Obama is no shoo-in.

  • The endtimers are on the lookout for the anti-Christ. I’m on the lookout for the devil-spawn of Lee Atwater. I mean, who really believes a guy like that could have a come-to-Jesus moment, only to bemoan America’s “tumor of the soul”.

No, no, no. The evil one left him to take up residence in the thousand souls Atwater had prepared: talk radio blowhards, Fox News commentators, Swift Boaters, on and on. Those are the ones to keep an eye on.

    Can I get a witness?

  • Grampy has morphed into Don Rickles…old…short…fat…bald….a guy who can tear you to pieces whilst wearing a shit-eating grin.

  • Unfortunately Obama’s cockiness is going to cause him the election—between the arrogance of acting like the president while in Europe to his comments today on the CNN ticker of “we did it really well” he is going to lose the womans vote…..I know this because #1 I am a Democratic woman turned off by him, and #2 my business dictates that I know how to market to women and Rule #1 is no matter how good you are (even if you are the best at something) if women perceive you as arrogant they will go elsewhere rather than give their $$ to someone they think is cocky and full of themselves…..and I imagine votes are taken as seriously as money. Katie Springfield MA

  • Yep. I’m convinced. Clearly CBR has a powerful anti-troll filter that doesn’t exclude comments by trolls, it makes them look really stupid.

Sort of like greasemonkey only 100 times better.

  • Hey watch the Rickles dig…I loved that guy when I was a kid! He was my dad’s fav.

And I wonder just when McCain has been appropriate. I can’t recall the last time.

  • Katie, you are not voting for Obama because he thinks is “all that” right, LOL

I am sorry but McCain is the arrogant one. He is whines like a baby, he cannot believe this young black confident man is taking his glory. McCain thinks he is better because of who is. Period.

I am sorry, but you are not an expert on this subject of women and arrogance. What I do know is that women admire confidence in a man(candidate) and that is what Obama exudes, McCain on other exudes weakness and bitterness.

  • Hey, katie-girl, @22

Some of us like ’em “cocky” — the more the better, especially if there’s substance to the man . Me, I can’t stand lackwits, especially inefficient ones, like McCane, so Obama’s not gonna loose *this* woman’s vote.

By the way… If, as you say, some women dislike people who won’t hide their light under a bushel and who won’t exhibit false modesty… You can’t be doing all that well at your business, seeing as you come through as rather arrogant and overbearing yourself.

  • Ms Joanne–
I appreciate your support of and loyalty to Mr O and your incredible memory of his voting record. But I am not convinced that he is’nt just saying whatever he needs to to get elected….both in the primaries and now. I wish we had a consistant, non-flipflopping ( EX: public funds and troop withdrawal flips), non-cocky Democratic candidate that I could love. But no matter how much the media spotlights him, I’m not in love with him as a potential leader and I am a lifelong Democrat. Sure he seems like a good dad/husband and he gives a great speech. But his inexperience combined with his cockiness (and his stubbornness at times to admit when he’s wrong—EX:see todays “meet the press”) makes me truely fear his judgement . Again, I’m only stating my opinion and I don’t see myself voting the opposite, but I think I may just stay home this November. Katie Springfield

  • MsJoanne, thanks for that very thorough post on Obama’s record. I learned quite a bit. If you have something similar posted elsewhere with links, I would be greatly appreciative.

A little more related to the current post, though, I have to mention Ben Stein. I will admit that I liked his game show “Win Ben Stein’s Money”, but I never really cared for him as an actor nor for his politics. He was a speechwriter for Nixon and Ford, which speaks volumes. Now he says that McCain can’t win without Rove. Here’s the article.

  • Oh, and katie springfield ma, I get the impression that you are fairly new here, so you might want to spend some time and really go through some of the archived items here at the Carpetbagger Report regarding Obama. You might learn why your opinions are misinformed and misguided.

If you think sitting out the election this year is an option, you haven’t been paying attention.

Of course, to each his or her own.

  • @ katie springfield ma

No problem, vote for who you want to. I just hope you know what you’re really voting for and of course, good luck with your (or your offspring’s) reproductive “rights” in the future. Women voting for McBush is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard of myself but Hell, everybody has on f#cked up conviction or another. Mine is a globe in step with itself, I think your’s is easier to achieve and frighteningly so. PS, My father is a complete racist in San Diego (another reason why I call it Inbred Transylvania. He’s on your side! That is the one and only reason I have ever come across people who might actually vote for McCain because they “don’t know” who Obama is. He’s black and that’s the big issue time and again regardless of how it’s spun… I know firsthand.

  • apparently since all this mug slinging by McCain is not really working they have gone into the voter purge mode and are purging hundreds of thousands of black voters, latinos, foreclosure victims etc from the rolls, please contact everyone in the media so we can get something done. Greg Palast and Robert Kennedy I think are working on it.Article on Daily Kos.

  • I especially love the way the CBR Trollinator300 moves the apostrophes and otherwise makes changes to the grammar and spelling of a troll’s post, thereby increasing the perception that the writer is between ages 8-12.

The “inappropriate references to the 1st Am.” script is a work of art.

You really ought to market this.

  • shorter katie: LALALALALA I’m not listening! LALALALALA!

though to her credit, after reading the litany of Obama’s accomplishments, I thought katie would say “well, now he’s just showing off and I HATE showoffs.”

Whatever cancer of the stupid Mary had, apparently, she’s catching.

  • William @ 34.
I hope I am wrong but I definetly get the feeling you are calling me “racist” just because I don’t love Mr O. It scares me to think ANY Democrat does’nt value free speech–even if it is a dissenting voice….what makes this nation so amazing is the wonderful freedoms we enjoy to express ourselves. Is’nt it the Democrats who embrace the idea of “questioning authority” ? To me that means ALL authority—not just the “already elected” but also the people we plan on putting in office.
As far as the reproductive rights issue and “this election”: EVERY election both sides come out and say how “urgent” this election is related to the court and their potential rulings. I think it is all hype to motivate the cattle to get out and vote “out of fear”….and don’t we hate Rove for doing just that (motivating with fear?). Abortion’s legality is’nt going anywhere. I’m tired of our leaders and their cronies trying to manipulate us with fear to secure our vote. They need to EARN our vote and so far Mr O has’nt done that for me. Again, just an opinion from a Democratic woman. Katie, Springfield

  • katien you have half a point in how every election becomes THE MOST IMPORTANT ELECTION EVAH in terms of Roe v. Wade.

However, this time, we are one vote away from a serious attack on women’s reproductive rights, and the odds are FAR FAR GREATER that a liberal justice will retire or die before a conservative. McCain has already promised the right that he’ll be looking for Justices in the Scalia/Alito mold (with the accent on “mold”). If you really think your rights are not at risk, and you might want to sit this election out,do yourself a favor: don’t keep insisting you’re a democrat. It only adds to your list of stupid, like a 500 pound shut-in who insists he’s merely big-boned, or the old ladies who insist Liberace never met the right gal.

  • Ok, Katie Springfield, since MsJoanne painstakingly listed Obama’s activity in the senate — and thank you for that BTW! Very informative — how about you respond in kind?

    Examples of inexperience?
    Examples of “cockiness”?
    Examples of inconsistency?

Most of your arguments sound to me like “I don’t like him just because I don’t like him”. Couple that with your claims of his cockiness (synonym: uppity), and you are wandering heedlessly into the thicket of racist code words.

So don’t get all pearl-clutchy about being called on it.

If it’s not true, fine. But you’ve already stated that you don’t intend to vote at all — in the most important presidential election *of our lifetimes*– rather than vote for Obama. That indicates a more-than-moderate antipathy to the man from a self-avowed Democrat. A Democrat who is not voting on the platform, but voting on the man himself.

In fact, it sounds a lot like the position of a closet racist.

  • Hi Bey–here are a couple of examples
Inexperience: 2 years as a Senator
Cockiness: acting like he’s already the president in Europe, that God-aweful pseudo presidential seal (I am backed up by multiple Liberal journalists who stated the same thing about this on CNN)
Inconsistency: flip-flopping on troop withdrawal and FISA
I really wish you would’nt call me a racist…thats a pretty meanspirited thing to say to someone just because they don”t love the candidate you do. It’s still America and I can actually disagree with you without being a terrible person.
    Katie Springfield

  • Inexperience? HELLO! Did you read anything I wrote? (And whomever asked for links, the parens are the Senate bill numbers, go to Thomas, you can look each up.)

Sorry Katie, that comment put you in troll territory. Those are right wing talking points (except inexperience which we can thank Hils for). I’m done with you.

How can anyone vote McCain when things are so messed up?

  • Katie,

As for inexperience – see MsJoanne’s post. And stop being so disingenuous about his political experience. He didn’t spring fully formed from Ted Kennedy’s head after all. He has quite a long resume in Illinois – a not insignificant state. Apart from that, I would argue that his campaign shows just how shrewd a politician he is. He defeated the Clinton juggernaut, despite the Rev and the hardworking white people.

Cockiness: Did you listen to any of his speeches while he was overseas? How he reiterated constantly that he is only a senator? How he spoke in generalities and platitudes? How he stressed global unity? Ask yourself why those enormous crowds gathered. Was it because Obama was pretending the throne? Perhaps it was, like many of us here at home, the world sees that we are witnessing an extraordinary leader. Maybe it’s because we might recover from the abdication of everything America used to stand for under an Obama presidency.

Stupid stuff like honor, integrity, dignity which have been utterly abandoned under the Bush/Cheney/Rove regime.

McCain doesn’t generate that excitement. Why is that, I wonder?

Millions of Americans believe that Obama is the best hope we have to reclaim the high road. Americans have been wrong before (see the Nixon and Bush criminal administrations), but the rest of the world usually sees us more dispassionately. And they are as excited about Obama as we are. What does that tell you?

I’ll give you the seal and FISA. But he hasn’t changed his position on troop withdrawal. That’s a FauxNews talking point, In fact, he’s been remarkably consistent overall, especially when compared with his opponent.

And finally, let go of the pearls and read what you’re writing. If you want to stop being shocked – shocked! – that people are misreading your posts as racist code, then I suggest you stop using the racist code words.

You say you’re a Democrat – prove it. Not voting in this, the most important election of a generation, for no reason based on his stand on the issues, but rather who he is as a person, smacks of racism.

If you don’t like that, then I suggest you change it.

  • anyone who believes katie is a dem, I’m selling a bridge in Brooklyn, cheap.

  • Gosh, I’ve proudly voted for Senator Kennedy and Bill Clinton in the past as well as Mr Gore….but I guess that does’nt make me a Dem because I won’t just fall in line with partisan “robotic” thinking right? I’m supposed to mindlessly vote for Mr Obama because you Dems decide I should huh? Maybe your right…..maybe I’m becoming a little more “Joe Lieberman” and about to flee the party (or get tossed out) because I won’t go blindly into that good voting booth and cast my vote for someone I’m uncertain about.
    Katie, Springfield MA

  • Pull the other one toots, it plays “Jingle Bells.”

REAL Democrats never feel the need to list their bona fides.

  • Sorry I’m not a “partisan robot” for you Slappy.(I seem to be depressing lots of Dems on this blog with my Obama-uncertainty) ….problem is I don’t feel either candidate is for real….I think they are both flip-floppers who will say anything to get elected. I’ll just have to keep watching and listening to both of these guys. November is a long way off so I’ve got lots of time to decide.
    Katie Springfield MA

  • “depressing?” yeah, sure, you mean that much. we’re all atwitter over your precious vote.

You asked questions, here & elsewhere, you could’ve EASILY looked up yourself in less time than it took to write the actual question. We’re not trying to influence your opinion about Obama, as it’s obvious you love the attention that comes from being the outsider rebel dem not about to end to our will (you’re a loner, dottie…a rebel). No, we’re influencing everyone else’s opinion about you, which is that you’re obviously a cyber-attention whore, so no one will take your subsequent dopiness seriously.

You have the answers to your questions about Obama’s qualifications. Ifyou stil don’t know whether or not he’s a viable candidate – if his perceived cokiness really chafes your ass that much – then nothing we say will influence you. In fact, quite the opposite, for we…are…Obamabots…we..are… assimilated…join us…it’s blisssss…

    tool

  • Slappy, you seem to be making MY vote a personal issue to you, to the point of using insults in your response. Is Senator Obama so important to you that you insult a stranger ? If your average “Obamabot” uses words like “ass”, “whore” and “tool” when discussing political beliefs, you may be right….maybe I don’t want to associate myself with your crowd. Thanks for the insight into Senator Obama’s hardcore voters.
    Katie Springfield

  • Not at all, kiddo, just pointing out what a total tool you are and that you shouldn’t be taken seriously. I should’ve predicted your stupid “well, if that’s the way you Obama supporters talk to non-Obama supporters I’m taking my ball and going home” horseshit. You’re a sham, a farce. and a mockery of a sham. Good for a laugh, bad for America. Later, gator.

  • Good luck to you in the future slappy…. and evidently “yes” Senator Obama IS so important to you that you insult strangers on his behalf.
    Katie Springfield

  • Not strangers per se. Just posers, like you, who wouldn’t vote for Obama if their lives depended on it (which it kinda sorta does, if you’re a soldier who is or could be deployed to iraq, can’t afford health insurance, might need an abortion one day, etc.), but like to pretend to be undecided “independent” Dems to generate controversy.

Here’s your “discussion” in a nutshell.

You: I think Obama’s full of shit. You’re all duped because he’s the nominee. Prove me wrong.
Us: Fine, here are facts, here are links to support the facts.
You: Thanks, all, but…IIIIIII still think Obama’s full of shit and you’re all duped because he’s the nominee

And we should carry on civilized conversations with you…why?

    Did I mention: Tool?

  • Here’s the real deal slappy: I was all for Hillary until she lied about the sniper fire incident and now I’m left to decide between 2 people who look EXACTLY the same to me : nice guys in real life, but total flip-floppers as politicians. I don’t trust EITHER of them so your reccommendation to “look up links and their website” means nothing if I don’t believe they’ll actually do what they say they will. Seriously, all BS aside, I probably will sit this one out as I don’t trust them and this blog as well as the others I’ve consulted today have only reaffirmed this for me. And no I don’t feel guilty about not voting. We’ll be fine no matter who gets in.
    Katie, springfield

  • Aaaaaand the horseshittery continues. You were given links not only to what Obama says he’ll do (which you can choose to believe or not, I don’t give a rat’s ass), but also what he’s done, which is a hell of a lot, in his short time in the Senate. I would think that would speak volumes as to his earning his keep in D.C., unless you want to believe he lacks substance. Which you do. Because you’re a “lookitme, I’m an attention whore” tool.

Riddle me this: Why do you ask questions when you admit to being predisposed to not believing the answers? “I think Obama’s full of shit, and the people who believe in him are full of shit too. Prove me wrong. Oh, you can’t, because you believe in him, and therefore are full of shit.” Nice racket.

  • Slappy you and I are just not going to agree on this. Obama has flipped on FISA and troop withdrawal….big, important liberal issues…he changed what he “said” he stood for…so why would I believe anything else he says (or McCain for that matter). Again, talking with others on this blog has only reaffirmed what I thought before i wrote: that most Democrats will vote for ANY Democratic nominee to get rid of Republicans, no questions asked. So any questions I or any undecided has just doe’snt sit well with a partisan.
Good luck to you in the future and I hope your candidate does whatever you want him to for you.
    Katie, Springfield

  • amazing, isn’t it? When you have preconceived notions, AND you’re stubborn and enjoy attention, your tendency to listen to other people’s opinions.

Good luck getting the therapy you need.

  • “Either way we’ll be fine?”

Are you high? Our economy is collapsing. We’ve bankrupted our greatgrandchildren fighting this illegal war on credit. Torture has been done in our name. An astounding number of governmental agencies have been corrupted by this regime. A man walked into a church service yesterday and opened fire because he’s been fed a toxic diet of hate media for years.

We’re a lot of things, but fine is not among them.

And anyone who claims not to be able to tell the difference between Obama and McCain is being deliberately obtuse.

  • P.S. You opened this conversation by stating it’s your job to know women and women won’t vote for Obama because he’s “arrogant”.

You apparently don’t know as much about marketing to women as you thought.

  • Ladies I have definetly decided not to vote this November (at least that will please you to hear I won’t vote for your opposition)….I’ve searched my heart and found I can’t vote for either guy and, yes, I do feel we will be just fine….we live in the greatest country in the world, with the most opportunity, so we will always find a way to not only survive but thrive. Our current ecomomic troubles are temporary..(they always are)…and either gentleman will work hard for us (I truely believe this).
Good luck and I hope the Senator does all you want him to do for you.
    katie springfield MA

  • in other words: don’t ask me to make a decision, I’m just a girl!

You insult your gender, your nation and your species with such a ham-handed cop-out. It’s a shame you’re incapable of shame. But it’s all I’d expect from a cyber-attention whore such as yourself. If ignorance is bliss, you truly live in your own private Nirvana.

You asked questions for which you truly didn’t care about the answers. Typical troll bait. As you bury your head in the sand try not to eat too many earthworms.
