DeLay to OMB?

I always thought [tag]Tom DeLay[/tag] was clearly in the wrong job when he held the House Majority Leader post, but rumor has it, he may actually be up for an even scarier job.

The White House is looking at a list of cost-cutting candidates to head the [tag]Office of Management and Budget[/tag], and Rep. Tom [tag]DeLay[/tag], R-Texas, may be on it.

The former House majority leader, who announced he will resign from Congress and is under a state indictment on political money laundering charges, is listed as a possible replacement for Josh Bolten, the U.S. News and World Report said.

It’s hard to imagine how any serious person would consider DeLay for the post, but then again, the White House decided that Harriet Miers was the most qualified lawyer in the country for the Supreme Court, too.

In fact, at least one high-profile conservative blogger seems to think this is a perfectly good idea. “No one knows more about the budget,” John Hinderaker said. “And I’d like to see the administration show some support for DeLay.”

At this point, it’s probably worth reminding folks that DeLay, shortly before the war in Iraq began, said, “Nothing is more important in the face of a war than cutting taxes.” He also said there is no more fat to cut from the federal budget, and that tax cuts are incapable of increasing the deficit because they pay for themselves.

In other words, if [tag]Bush[/tag] did tap DeLay to be his [tag]OMB[/tag] director, he’d fit right in.

“No one knows more about the budget,” John Hinderaker said. “And I’d like to see the administration show some support for DeLay.”

I’d like to see a conservative who actually shows support for cutting deficits. Having the Republicanites become the party of borrow and spend just totally destroys the balance that keeps America on an even keel.

Dear John, you are an idiot!

  • It would suprise me if the White House didn’t hire him. Bully, criminal, narrow-minded, full of rhetoric and hyperpole, and doesn’t take responsibility for his actions.

    Sounds perfect

  • Brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!! When the deficit is out of control, turn to a money launderer to ‘balance the books!’ Seriously, where are the Guiness dudes when you need them? Hire a crook to cook the books? Brilliant!!!!!

As for Hindraker? Zzzzzzzz….He’ll say whatever suits the cause today, because no one will hold him to it tomorrow. If Hindraker is going to lead the charge for Bugsy DeLay, Delay’s in far more trouble than I’d thought.

  • I think DeLay would be perfect for the OMB job. He can say the most obviously wrong statements with absolute sincerity. He can run around the country saying that it is our Christian duty to make Bush’s tax cut permanents and doing so will solve the immigration problems and lead to a balance budget. When the Democrats point out that it makes no sense, DeLay would viciously attack them for wanting to undermine the country during a time of war.

Let’s be realistic – no sane person would want to try to make a rational argument for Bush’ budgets, so an insane DeLay is a perfect choice.

  • It won’t happen. Bolten leaves the post by next month, and Bush cannot name a guy who is under indictment and faces the uncertain legal future of DeLay.

To say nothing of how radioactive DeLay is.

  • I can’t see anyway DeLay could serve, I think he is going be pretty busy staying out of prison. On the other hand, I can’t think of a better choice. DeLay certainly has plenty of expierience moving money around.

  • Take it to the max.
Abramoff for Secretary of the Treasury! Build a special government convict complex in some federal prison and bring in the Dukster for military procurement. Why not turn corruption oversight to the real experts. These guys stand by their convictions!

  • In fact, at least one high-profile conservative blogger seems to think this is a perfectly good idea. “No one knows more about the budget,” John Hinderaker said.

Was I the only one who got a tad ill seeing Hinderaker’s name on this wonderful blog? Its kinda like seeing bird droppings on a ferrari.

Don’t get me wrong Mr. Carpetbagger, I’m not saying you shouldn’t link to that worthless blog or mention one of its many mendacious authors, its just that I wasn’t prepared to see it this morning.

    And Kali,

These guys stand by their convictions!

that is really funny. I wonder if we could work it into our Republicans Cheat branding? Maybe a 30 second ad with the start as a big bold “Republicans Cheat” text, then a video montage of the perp walks and mug shots, followed by a few outrageous quotes from those same cretins, then either text or voice over “These guys stand by their convictions. Had enough?.” And then the ad finishes with a repeat of the big bold text “Republicans Cheat.”

Now that’s an add I’d love to see play in every competitive or possibly competitive House race this fall. A boy can dream, can’t he?

  • I hope Rumsfeld resigns so Tom DeLay can be the next secretary of defense. If we are going to continue to wreak havoc on the rest of the world, we should go all the way. DeLay wouldn’t hesitate to drop a few nukes on those pesty Iranians, that’s for sure.

In my lifetime, three presidents from Texas started three phony wars to enrich their friends and family. One president was murdered in Texas. Texas has its own electrical grid apart from the rest of the country so if they decide to stage a coup, they just turn our lights off and keep their lights on. Has anyone been keeping track of how much of the defense budget is spent in Texas? There’s a reason for it.

Tom DeLay would speed up the transfer of all of our money to crooked polticians from Texas by spending the entire defense budget in Texas and then maybe the right wing lunatics who live there will be happy and leave us the rest of us alone for a decade or two.

I wouldn’t go to Texas if you paid me. I’m not a wimp but I’m not going out of my way to be anywhere near Texas. They murder people they don’t like without a second thought. If I was a black or gay person living in Texas, I’d get the hell out of there. The people of Texas don’t hide the fact that they hate gay and black people.

The people in Texas refuse to give gay people any rights because they think being gay is immoral. People in Houston and Dalllas must think gay people are dumb as posts because now those cities want gay people to vacation there. When I read that, I almost fell over. What’s the message here? “We really, really hate gay people and we think they are so f**king stupid, they will still come to Texas and give us their hard-earned money.”

Remember Bob Herbert’s series on the black people who were framed on drug charges by a state-appointed law enforcement official? I started thinking about US Technologies, the Israeli-owned company that did business in Texas prisons. Former FBI director, William Webster, was a director of US Technologies and he fired the auditors, B. O. Seidman, because they wouldn’t lie for him.

Bit of trivia – Senator George Mitchell also was a director and the Carlyle Group invested money. If you ever have a spare minute, take a look at US Technologies’ financials. “Fraud” is written all over them.

I was concerned that the state-appointed law enforcement offical was being paid to round up desirable inmates for the Israeli-run prison. The people he arrested were not criminals, just poor. If I ran a prison, I’d rather have scared poor people in my prison than violent psychopaths who are a lot more work. Having Israelis in charge of your prison is insane if you care at all about dignity and human rights. They don’t like black people and they will cut corners everywhere they can. The Israelis come here to make money, not contribute to society. That’s fine with me if we are all on the same page but I would never allow Israelis to run a US prison.

As it later tuned out, I don’t think US Technolgies was actually operating
a prison. I think it was just using cheap prison labor in Texas but US Technologies was being run by crooks. I don’t know what the real story was but I didn’t have time to investigate. Why bother? Criticize the Carlyle Group and you must be a Michael Moore fan.

I still don’t know for sure if the state-appointed law enforcement official wasn’t rounding up desirable prisoners for another company with a contract to operate a Texas prison. But I think anything could happen to poor black people in Texas and no one in Texas would help them. Bob Herbert is in NY and he had to embarass Texas into letting those people out of prison. If you are black and poor, come to New York. We have a lot of problems with corruption but we still try and take care of needy people.

I met Molly Ivins once at a Newday literary tea at the Waldorf Hotel in NYC a number of years ago and I really liked her. Why she lives in Texas, I don’t know.
