Consider this quote of the day:
Privately, some Republican lawmakers were much less supportive of Mr. DeLay, with one saying that if the steady drone of accusations persists, Mr. DeLay will be in trouble and could be forced to surrender his post. “I don’t know if it is tomorrow or next year, but it is inevitable,” said one lawmaker who would not be named for fear of antagonizing the leadership. (emphasis added)
The fact that a Republican member of Congress would say this out loud to the New York Times shows that we’re not just dealing with a minor flap that’ll blow over. Tom DeLay has a real problem on his hands.
That said, here’s my runner-up quote of the day:
“If we let him hang out to dry, how many others in leadership will ever risk trying to accomplish bold objectives?” [Paul Weyrich, chairman of the Free Congress Foundation] wrote. “DeLay also needs our fervent prayers. This is spiritual warfare.”
I haven’t any idea what Weyrich would include in his vision of “spiritual warfare,” but it sure sounds unpleasant.
