Emanuel’s good point

In Washington, I think this is what one might call a “winning argument.”

Washington, D.C. House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel issued the following statement regarding his amendment to cut funding for the Office of the Vice President from the bill that funds the executive branch. The legislation — the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations bill — will be considered on the floor of the House of Representatives next week.

“The Vice President has a choice to make. If he believes his legal case, his office has no business being funded as part of the executive branch. However, if he demands executive branch funding he cannot ignore executive branch rules. At the very least, the Vice President should be consistent. This amendment will ensure that the Vice President’s funding is consistent with his legal arguments. I have worked closely with my colleagues on this amendment and will continue to pursue this measure in the coming days.”

Very clever. Good for Rahm.

If the Office of the Vice President is a branch unto itself, I’m sure Emanuel will consider Cheney’s own appropriations bill, independent of any actual executive-branch spending.

Finally, the twisted logic of the Demon Cheny is coming back to bite him right in the old pacemaker. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

  • However, if he demands executive branch funding he cannot ignore executive branch rules. — Rahm Emanuel

For that matter…Now that Bush has announced himself to be *also* exempt from those same rules… The logical step would be to defund both offices. Give the two bastards a shared cell at Gitmo (since we’re not talking about closing it, indeed, we’ve just sent a new inmate) and let Pelosi re-decorate both offices and use them for a better purpose.

  • Hey cats, Can you Dig it? Apologies to Issac Hayes (and Richard Rowntree).

    Who’s the war loving Prick
That’s a (neo) con machine with all the tricks?
    DICK!
    Ya damn right!

Who is the man that would out a spy
    For his profits man?
    DICK!
    Can you dig it?

Who’s the cat that will cop out
    Ignore the rules or pout?
    DICK!
    Right On!

They say this scum DICK is a bad mother
    SHUT YOUR MOUTH!
    I’m talkin’ ’bout DICK.
    THEN WE CAN DIG IT!

    He’s an total sleazy man
But no one fucks with his plan, not Dem Rahm, man
    DICK C!

  • I can’t believe it!

    Great going fellow.

    The bad news?
You belong to the Dimocrat party…
You think they got your back on this????

    We’ll see….

  • I always liked Isaac as Rockfish’s excon ‘buddy’, Gandy.

  • While it’s a fun idea to think of Cheney being defunded, I would prefer impeachment to this game where they give Cheney’s “legal argument” any merit whatsoever.

Hey Dems, this isn’t a friggin game.

  • Ah, Ol’ war profiteering, 5 war-deferments Slick Dick is up to his old tricks yet again. Yes, force Mr. “I’m so moral cuz I’m a Republican, ‘Go F Yourself’ ” to be consistent. It will probably be the first time in his baleful life, causing his cold blood to freeze in his sleezy veins right then and there due to the shock. Perhaps then, with no funding, Mr. Consistent can go out and do speeches for money, trying to persuade the masses that he and Bush have brought security and safety to their beloved Iraq, that they have brought economic prosperity and peace to the region, and that the insurgency is in it’s last throes. This man is a danger to society and a royal waste of human DNA.

  • Smart move.

(Heck, send him a bill for reimbursement for funding provided in error over the last six years. Then jail him when he refuses to pay up. )

It will be interesting to see how much support the Reich Wing Noise Machine can drum up for someone who had rock-bottom approval polls even before he shot one of his few fans.

  • Can you you say “non-binding?” I knew you could.

    Then let’s go on to:

    Spineless
    Marginalized
    Ignored
    Given-up-on
    Incredibly frickin’ whiney
Official Bootlickers to the Republican party

  • It’s what Cheney’s wanted all along. It the excuse the he needs to sell the naming rights to Halliburton. It’ll be the Halliburton Corporate Procurement and Disbursement Welfare Office operating out of the White House and the name will then match reality. Taxpayer cash is great up front, but if Cheney can’t get it that way, he’ll let Halliburton foot the bill for his “branch” and they can use their taxpayer provided loot to cover paper clips, shotgun shells, pacemaker batteries and shovels with which to keep digging away at the foundation of American democracy.

  • I think the analysis of Racer X is spot on. This is not a game. Cheney mocks our system of government, the Constitution, and last and probably least the very institution of which Rahm is a member. And the best response we have is some sort of stunt to “threaten” to defund the OVP? I think this plan is too cute by half and ineffectiveness squared. In other words, it is vintage crap of the Beltway Crowd. Perhaps the Republic will survive and eventually thrive again in spite of the unforgivably inept leadership it now suffers. In the meantime established and long-cherished principles are shredded while dangerous precedents go without serious challenge, bars are lowered, and people continue to DIE in Iraq. Get a clue, Rahm. You and your gang need to act in an intelligent and courageous manner to do the job voters elected you to do. Forget the stunts and work on some substance, will you?

  • Alibubba, @12,

Where do you see “non-binding”? It’s not a resolution, it’s an amendment to a real, honest-to-goodness, funding *bill*:

“[…] Rahm Emanuel issued the following statement regarding his amendment to cut funding for the Office of the Vice President from the bill that funds the executive branch. The legislation — the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations bill — will be considered on the floor of the House of Representatives next week.”

I grant you; it’s unlikely to *pass* but it’s “for real”.

  • Can we lay to rest the myth that he didn’t serve in the military, I mean there is video evidence………….cheney was sergent bilko

  • calvin was discussing The Dark One’s refusal to abide by the recordkeeping law because he was not part of the Executive Branch.

Gee, whiz, we concluded, if he’s not part of the Executive Branch, it’s time to issue subpeonas because he’s not covered by Executive Branch privilege!
