‘Ever is a very strong word’

As part of his aggressive new defense strategy, Tom DeLay sat down with the conservative Washington Times yesterday for an exclusive interview yesterday, knowing that the Sun Myung Moon-owned paper would treat him with kid gloves.

There was one exchange that kind of summed up DeLay’s approach to ethics problems perfectly.

Times Reporter Charles Hurt: “Have you ever crossed the line of ethical behavior in terms of dealing with lobbyists, your use of government authority or with fundraising?”

DeLay: “Ever is a very strong word.”

I wonder if his staff has started updating their resumes yet.

That’s not even the worst part of the article. DeLay even says that there should be no judicial review or a right to privacy:

Mr. Dinan: You’ve been talking about going after activist judges since at least 1997. The [Terri] Schiavo case gives you a chance to do that, but you’ve recently said you blame Congress for not being zealous in oversight.
Mr. DeLay: Not zealous. I blame Congress over the last 50 to 100 years for not standing up and taking its responsibility given to it by the Constitution. The reason the judiciary has been able to impose a separation of church and state that’s nowhere in the Constitution is that Congress didn’t stop them. The reason we had judicial review is because Congress didn’t stop them. The reason we had a right to privacy is because Congress didn’t stop them.
Mr. Dinan: How can Congress stop them?
Mr. DeLay: There’s all kinds of ways available to them.

  • Christ, answer the damn question! Whenever these crooks feel the gaze of the public on their malfeasances, they start chopping the logic. They don’t seem to realize that once they start that, they’re basically confessing that the charges are true.

My mantra for the next year and a half? Get ’em out of there!
