Far-right GOP congressman says terrorists will applaud Obama presidency

When it comes to unhinged buffoons who manage to get elected to Congress, Iowa’s Steve King (R) is one of the more striking examples. He’s generally just an embarrassment to himself and his constituents.

But the impressive thing about King is that he’s constantly trying to out do himself, ratcheting up the stupidity to new heights. It’s almost impressive, in a depressing kind of way.

An Iowa Republican congressman said Friday that terrorists would be “dancing in the streets” if Democratic candidate Barack Obama were to win the presidency. Rep. Steve King based his prediction on Obama’s pledge to pull troops out of Iraq, his Kenyan heritage and his middle name, Hussein.

“The radical Islamists, the al-Qaida … would be dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on Sept. 11 because they would declare victory in this war on terror,” King said in an interview with the Daily Reporter in Spencer.

King said his comments were not meant to demean Obama but to warn how an Obama presidency would look to the world.

“His middle name does matter,” King said. “It matters because they read a meaning into that.”

I’d hoped to respond to the substance of King’s nonsense, but I’m afraid there really isn’t any. Jihadists who want the war to continue will be pleased when there’s a president who doesn’t? People in the Middle East care about Obama’s middle name because “they read a meaning into that“?

First, if this is the best smear right-wing voices can come up with, I’m unimpressed. Second, if King is sharp enough to tie his shoes in the morning, I’d be very impressed.

This is, after all, the same Steve King who:

* insists that “every child” in America’s public schools should be taught “the tenets of the Christian faith.”

* argues that the United States is “a Christian nation,” and called on Americans to “stand up” to “worship Christ.”

* compares immigrants to cattle.

* falsely argued that illegal immigrants murder 12 Americans a day.

* told reporters, “There probably are not 72 virgins in the hell [al Zarqawi is] at. And if there are, they probably all look like [White House correspondent] Helen Thomas.”

* described Joseph McCarthy as “a great American hero.”

* renamed S-CHIP the “Socialized Clinton-style Hillarycare for Illegals and their Parents” bill.

* argued that the civilian violent death rate in Washington, D.C., is actually higher than it is in Iraq, and cited bogus data while making the case.

* told Newsweek that federal courts “have defied federal law,” and he has a plan to “put the courts back in their appropriate constitutional place,” though he wouldn’t say what the plan is.

* was one of only 11 lawmakers to vote against emergency relief funds for Hurricane Katrina victims.

Obama should wear this guy’s smear as a badge of honor.

First, I hate to say this, but King is not an embarassment to many of his constituents. They actually agree with him. Which is why I am continually trying to get Nebraska to take that third of Iowa off of our hands.

Second, I’m guessing he wears slip ons, or has Sam Brownback tie his shoes after Sammy is done washing King’s feet.

Third, your list – while very impressive, particularly for a non-Iowan – leaves out that his first official act as a Congressman was sponsoring an English-Only bill, and that he had his staff create an actual 3-foot high scale model of a border fence and brought it to the floor of the House to show how it should be constructed.

Fortunately, I’m from The Other Iowa.

  • Was flipping channels this morning and happened on CNN as 2 talking heads discussed this after showing film clip of rep. King. Their dialogue consisted of one wondering what King was talking about and second T head making excuses about why it was ok that King was saying what he did. What the general public is being fed as news with commentary is more than lacking truth it is pure propaganda. Unless and until US newsmedia becomes unbiased the general pop will never know what is happening inthis Country.

  • It’s truly depressing to me that clods like this get elected to public office. Republicans have been campaigned to for so long using the themes of fear and prejudice that I wonder if they vote from some more primitive, reptilian part of their brain.

  • I will say this for King – he at least seems to know his appeal is limited to an insular villiage of neandrethals. There had long been rumors that he would run against Sen. Harkin, and he has now clearly announced that he will not do so – he can win his seat for life out in the western sticks, but he would get creamed in a statewide race. He has no appeal to The Other Iowa.

  • What is with these idiots? The “terrorists” can now dictate who we can and cannot vote for solely based on a middle name? This guy has already surrendered.

  • Would it be a bad thing if al-Qaeda danced in the streets and declared victory? Wouldn’t that mean that they weren’t going to try to attack us anymore?

I thought Republicans didn’t give a shit about what people in other countries, let alone terrorists, think of us. Now King wants us to base our decision on what Al-Qaeda wants?

  • King said his comments were not meant to demean Obama but to warn how an Obama presidency would look to the world.

Like this corn-pone bastard knows anything about how the world sees America. The Republicans specialize in Straw Men and Boogey Men.

  • We need a new tough saying for all the fear-mongering the Repubs are doing. How about These Colors Don’t Cower.

  • What is wrong with folks in Eye-oh-way? I guess that I have been watching “State Fair” (2nd edition) too many times. The only oddity that I noticed about Iowa, when I drove west many years ago, was that it was very hilly. I had the childhood impression that it was all flat corn fields, like southern Illinois…

Hmm,. CNN, do you mean Corporate Noisome Noise? I have tried to limit myself to TV news to watching Keith O. on his M – F hour-long show. Most of the rest of cable/satellite/network news is basically just right-wing propaganda for the Bush gangster regime and the McCane-in-waiting. Big Eddie Schultz is on the radio M-F, along with some good offerings from Air America and Nova-M radio. Take the weekends off to rest and recover. Don’t let the Boogie-terraists git ya. Folks used to check for “Reds under the bed.” Now we are scared s*itless of a few fanatics, armed with rusty rifles and box-cutters, who are five or six thousand miles away? Gimma a break. Just secure our borders, seal the airliner cockpit doors and our Corporate Empire will be safe for awhile..

  • I agree with Telegram Sam @9. Wouldn’t it be a much safer, more cost-effective way to deal with the terror issue in terms of both lives and dollars if those who resort to violence to get their point across would feel that the US is now lead by someone who is more worldly and puts a more international face on this nation?

I’d rather have the Arab world feel they have someone in the White House who represents change to them as well rather than some gruff, white bread neocon that they think will only understand violence. Instead of another president that perfectly represents their picture of the Great Satan, I’d be happy with one who would put terrorists in a quandary instead.

  • #13 is totally right. If you read the news from other countries, you will find that they are hoping for an Obama presidency. Salon has an article that suggests US standing in the world will increase dramatically if Obama is president.

  • What does it say about Iowa that they keep re-electing this guy? That’s the scarier part of this story.

For businesspeople like me who work a great deal internationally, he is the kind of American who causes our country incredible embarrassment in the eyes of the world — if he is so worried about what the rest of the world thinks . . .

  • Mr. King, being of an intellectual level somewhat lower than that of your typical, everyday, run-of-the-mill, dancing-in-the-streets terrorist, should really try to break that brown-paper-bag glue-sniffing habit he’s apparently picked up….

  • Mr. King is a great political leader and the fact that you listen to half crazed communist propaganda is disgusting. You should all be ashamed. Hilary and her league of propaganda are always trying to de-rail the Good Old Party. Mr. Kings ideas are original and different but that is what America was founded on. If we were to censor people like him whats next. Are we going to ban every idea that doesn’t agree with our ideas… NO! So all of you Clinton NAZIs knock off!

  • One more thing. Terrorist hate us because of their religion. And… oh yeah. America represents Americans interests first. I wish we could tax the hard working upper class and give all the money to Iraq so they can blow us up but sadly people like “crazy King” don’t want us to get attacked in the future. Politicians actually caring for us… You democrats probably are not to used to that.

  • “Kenyan heritage” is another racist stab by a closet KKK type who is obviously worried about having “that boy” (remember the Tiger Woods slur?) in the White House. What’s really scary is that there are more of this kind of person than we realize. And they’ll all vote for McCain.

  • McCain doesn’t go far enough. If were in Iraq lets get the job done. If it can’t be done will might as well hand them nuclear weapons and tell to wait 10 years because thats what is going to happen any way.

  • Wow I am hurt. I could be a mentally retarded Republican but I would still be smarter than you over controlling, brainwashed, “Let’s help the poor by ruining America’s economy” Democrats.

  • I am a Republican and I can say I am disappointed with Mr. Ciulla’s attacks against democrats but I do agree that Mr. Ciulla is right in saying that Democratic news papers over exaggerated facts. I think that success in Iraq is close but it will be costly. It will also be worth it to have a oil rich ally in the Middle East.

  • Just curious.
Once the crazy loopy Al-Queda guys stop dancing for joy with Obama’s win…then what?
Once we’ve left Iraq and lost the War on Terror… (He clearly equated the two.) …

    Is that… it?
If Al-Queda can declare victory and go stay home…. Isn’t that okay?

Or is this the part where you drag out the “we fight over there so they don’t come over here” chestnut.

If they DO follow us home, does that start “Global War on Terror II” or do you quietly roll up the “MISSION FAILED” banner for GWOT I and say, “Oops, haven’t lost yet. Still fighting. My bad.”

Just trying to get my jargon straight in advance of the alarmist propaganda salvo.

P.S. We had a bombing in Times Square. Why aren’t we on code Orange? Is Cheney getting soft on terror?

  • No. No to Ciulla. No to Mr. Osas. Yes to Hillary. Mrs. Clinton is the only one sensitive enough to handle the situation. Mrs. Clinton is such a nice woman… I also like her tax policies. The unmoral rich do not need the money and I do. Go ahead Mrs. Clinton raise those taxes!

  • Time to roll up the sleeves. First to Towearyforoutrage. The are many peaceful Islams. Many. Not all. One particular branch of Islams is the branch I like to call Kill the non Muslims branch. So not a problem right? They can just go kill Israel right? But sadly some people like Israel. If someone likes Israel they have a tendency to blow up.

Clinton Lover people like you are my favorite they make democrats look like their becoming retarded (or are they already). The rich higher the poor. So what? If we tax the rich they will give the money to us right? NO. The money goes to China.

  • Thank you Mr. Ciulla although your new user name was very interesting the rest of your opinion was agreeable. Terrorist won’t stop till were all Muslim.

  • i see someone is bored and off their meds, but really having entire threads of conversations with yoursel(ves) is a little pathetic.

kids, let this be a warning to you about faithfully taking your prescriptions.

  • I would still be smarter than you over controlling, brainwashed, “Let’s help the poor by ruining America’s economy” Democrats.

How could Democrats ruin America’s economy any worse than the Republicans have with their let’s-help-the-rich-only politics?

The dollar is now at an ALL TIME LOW.

Housing values are now at an ALL TIME LOW.

Oil prices have more than TRIPLED on this administration’s watch. Oil was $31 per barrel in 2000, it’s now $104.

The national debt has grown by 50% under Bush, with Communist China now holding a significant chunk of their debt, ready to call it in whenever they feel like it.

Yes, you’re incredibly smart if you think the Republicans are somehow doing a heckuva job with the economy.

  • What happened to this thread? I think it got hijacked by a bunch of third graders. I thought I was at CB’s place, I guess I must have been inadvertently redirected.

  • Uh, Nick/Fisce, you’ll do a better job pretending to be two different people if you remember to change the hyperlink in your username from the unique “http://gmail” link.

    What a moron.

  • Sorry, didn’t realize “Democrat Tharsher Nick” was the third sock puppet of the Multiple Personality Moron.

You sure did a good job of tharshing us Democrats, though!

November’s going to hurt like a bitch for you, punk.

  • President Lindsay and TR, my apologies, it is probably my fault. I broke that cardinal rule “never respond to a troll.” Sorry.

  • Ciulla, @20.

I thought you hero (King) was in favour of “English only”? Why don’t you at least *try* to follow his ideals?

  • Pre-9/11, Bin Laden’s dreams included
    1) Radicalizing all muslims, especially making it impossible to be a moderate or west-leaning Muslim,
    2) Destroying Hussein or forcing him and Iraq to be less secular,
    3) Inciting a similar overthrow of the House of Saud or reform of Saudi Arabia
(with the goal of replacing both with a pan-muslim caliphate based on sharia law),
    4) Diminishing the military and economic power of the US & making us look ineffective,
    5) Outraging us to the extent that we fall into unwise reprisals, along the way abandoning our civil liberties, our rule of law, our moral high ground, and our reputation among other nations,
    6) Getting the west out of the middle east, especially the US military out of the “holy land” of Saudi Arabia, but more generally making it impossible to do business there and making our culture look unattractive to muslims,
    7) Punishing the US for support of Israel (he has given this as a reason for his emnity to the US, but some think that this was added more as an afterthought).

As far as I can tell, Bush and the Republicans have handed Bin Laden #s 1, 2, 4, 5, and much of 6, and have done in fact most of his work for him. The reaction to Bush’s presidency will accomplish the remaining part of #6, other than handing over $$$ for oil.

  • All right. Who did it? ‘Fess up.

One of you forgot to have his pet Troll spayed or neutered. Now they’ve mated with the Spoofs and started producing litters of Sock Puppets!

  • Mr King’s comments about Obama are UnAMERICAN. THE REPUBLICAN PARTY CANDIDATE SHOULD INSIST UPON KING’S RESIGNATION;
KING IS NOT AN AMERICAN – HE IS AN IGNORANT, HYPOCRITE WHO IS NOT ONLY AND EMBARRASSMENT TO THE USA BUT TO THE WHOLE WORLD. IS HE A HITLER REINCARNATED? TO SUGGEST THAT SEN. OBAMA’S MIDDLE NAME WOULD SOMEHOW CAUSE THE WORLD TO DEEM AMERICA’S PRESENCE IN THE IRAC WAR AS A SURRENDER IF OBAMA BECAME PRESIDENT IS NOT ONLY STUPID IT REFLECTS KINGS GARBAGE DUMP MENTALITY. KING SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM CONGRESS.
OBAMA IS THE MAN FOR AMERICA! AMERICA IS OBAMA LAND. OBAMA IS A TRUE AMERICAN. AND A TRUE STATESMAN WHO WILL BRING PEACE TO ALL THE WORLD.

  • Jesus Mary and Joseph (@38)… Do learn how to turn off “all caps”, won’t ya? My teeth are still a-tremble, after yon blast…

  • Other than to call this guy a buffoon, he shouldn’t get any attention at all. He’s not worth anyone’s time. Unfortunately, there are too many of these buffoons in Congress right now.

  • I suppose that, following Rep .King’s logic, or lack thereof, that based on middle names and other irrelevant details, if Hillary “Rod ham” Clinton were elected, then all of the road pigs will be dancing in the streets and when Steve King from “Ode bolt”, Iowa was elected all of the “old odd bolts” will be dancing in the street too.

Maybe the good people of Iowa, next time, can elect a congressman who thinks. It is really scary they let this guy vote on stuff.

Fascism is an authoritarian political ideology (generally tied to a mass movement) that considers the individual subordinate to the interests of the state , party or society as a whole. Fascists seek to forge a type of national unity, usually based on (but not limited to) ethnic ,cultural ,racial ,religious attributes. Various scholars attribute different characteristics to fascism, but the following elements are usually seen as its integral parts: patriotism ,nationalism ,statism ,socialization ,militarism ,totalitarianism ,anti-communism ,corporatism ,populism ,collectivism ,autocracy and opposition to political and economic liberalism

Fascism is typified by totalitarian attempts to impose state control over all aspects of life: political, social, cultural, and economic, by way of a strong, single-party government for enacting laws and a strong, sometimes brutal militia or police force for enforcing them. [18] Fascism exalts the nation ,state , or group of people as superior to the individuals composing it. Fascism uses explicit populist rhetoric; calls for a heroic mass effort to restore past greatness; and demands loyalty to a single leader, leading to a cult of personality and unquestioned obedience to orders

    Former Columbia University Professor Robert O. Paxton;
Fascism may be defined as a form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation, or victim-hood and by compensatory cults of unity, energy, and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants, working in uneasy but effective collaboration with traditional elites, abandons democratic liberties and pursues with redemptive violence and without ethical or legal restraints goals of internal cleansing and external expansion….a sense of overwhelming crisis beyond reach of traditional solutions; 2. belief one’s group is the victim, justifying any action without legal or moral limits; 3. need for authority by a natural leader above the law, relying on the superiority of his instincts; 4. right of the chosen people to dominate others without legal or moral restraint; 5. fear of foreign `contamination.”
