First Bush, then Rove, now Starr

Over the last 10 days, Hillary Clinton raised a few eyebrows when she compared Barack Obama to George W. Bush and Karl Rove. Now, her campaign has raised the stakes a little more.

A Clinton campaign spokesman Thursday compared Barack Obama’s recent criticism of the New York senator to the actions of Whitewater prosecutor Ken Starr.

Since his losses on Tuesday night, Obama has stepped up his attacks on Clinton for her failure to release her most recent tax returns and other documents related to her time as first lady. Her campaign has said that she will release the tax records in advance of Pennsylvania’s April 22 primary, and that it cannot control the release of the White House schedules in question.

On a Thursday conference call with reporters, Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson said that the Illinois senator was attempting to sidestep questions about his readiness to lead the country. “He chose not to address those questions, but to attack Senator Clinton. I for one do not believe that imitating Ken Starr is the way to win a Democratic primary election for president,” said Wolfson.

Is it me, or is this response far stronger than it needs to be? Obama’s point is hardly unreasonable — Clinton hasn’t released her tax returns, and hasn’t explained why they need to be kept private. (She’s said publicly she would release returns after winning the nomination, not before.) One of the Obama campaign’s underlying criticisms is that Clinton is overly secretive, and the senator’s reluctance to disclose tax records plays into those concerns.

But is this really Ken Starr-like? Do we really need to see the amp turned to 11 for what seems like a routine criticism? After all, Clinton criticized Rick Lazio, her Republican Senate opponent in 2000, for not releasing his returns, so it’s hardly as if Clinton thinks the subject itself is beyond the pale.

Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton responded to the criticism:

“…We don’t believe that expecting candidates for the presidency to disclose their tax returns somehow constitutes Ken Starr-tactics, but the kind of transparency and accountability that Americans are looking for and that’s been missing in Washington for far too long,” said Burton, in a statement to reporters.

“And if Sen. Clinton doesn’t think that the Republicans will ask these very same questions, then she’s not as ready to go toe-to-toe with John McCain as she claims.”

We’re apparently poised to see more of this.

They say irony is dead, but Hillary Clinton’s campaign may be on a mission to prove that wrong. In a memo today, the Clinton camp went negative on Barack Obama for, yes, going negative on Clinton. “Senator Obama lost Ohio and Texas because voters had doubts about his ability to serve as Commander-in-Chief and steward of the economy. But instead of addressing those concerns, how is Senator Obama responding? By attacking Senator Clinton,” the memo reads. […]

Forget the inherent internal contradictions here; the Clinton campaign hasn’t made any secret of its negative campaigning strategy over recent days. As a colleague observed — correctly, we think — the memo is sort of like starting a fight, then complaining when the other guy hits you back.

After seeing the kitchen-sink strategy in action, it does seem a little odd to see a campaign memo complaining about political “attacks.”

If Obama does confront Clinton more directly in the coming weeks — as now seems inevitable — expect this entire dynamic to get increasingly annoying. I suspect every criticism will soon be characterized as a) a right-wing talking point; b) a page from Karl Rove’s playbook; c) Ken Starr-like; or d) some combination thereof.

“Hillary Clinton: Whining We Can Believe In”

  • All I know is, if the Clinton campaign tries to slag Obama by claiming that he’s just a shill for the trial lawyers, I’m gonna send Mark Penn a tuna fish sandwitch via the USPS.

  • And Godwin’s Law surely applies…eventually one of them will compare the other to Hitler. 🙂

  • Is it just me, or is Clinton’s strategy to create an alternative universe, much the way Bush did? Bush gets away with it because of Friends at Fox, etc. Clinton seems to be trying to do it by fitting into the Bush world. And don’t you just know there is an agreement to keep Presidential records secret, not to mention all the other closeted skeletons? The problem is, were she ever elected, Dan Burton et. al. revert to their pro-2001 selves. Could this be the kind of politics Obama is talking about changing?

  • I think this is funny. It actually defuses any criticism of Obama’s going “negative” by making the Clinton campaign look like a bunch roided-up grad-A a-holes who can’t take even a hint of scrutiny.

And it makes you wonder what in those tax returns is so bad that it’s worth taking these hits rather than revealing.

    More pleeze, Howard!

  • Greg Sargeant wrote something a little off today. He said

Wolfson is referring to oblique references to Whitewater and other past Clinton stories that the Obama camp has made lately — attacks Wolfson is trying to discredit by associating them with Starr’s panty-sniffing inquisition.

But the link he gave didn’t mention any oblique refernces at all, just the tax questions.

It’s a lot different to call Obama Ken Starr over a set of references to those investigations than it is to insult him like that over just the tax returns. So is there a pattern of the Obama camp making references to Whitewater and such or is Wolfson just dem-agoging?

Obama is not Ken Starr, he’s just a star.

  • Making broad accusations about an innocent land deal?

Hmmm. Sounds like the Clinton camp talking about the Rezko non-story.

  • HRC’s campaign is on skis, flying through the air directly above the shark tank, just about to go to commercial.

  • Obama’s point is unreasonable because tax returns aren’t due until April 15. I don’t see why Obama should be calling for the returns before they are due, then implying that she has something to hide when she doesn’t produce them EARLY. I doubt Obama seriously believes Clinton is hiding anything dirty. The best he can hope for is a $400 haircut minute when voters find out how much Bill earned in speakers fees, or some such. It is stupid and I doubt it will affect voters much. Of all people, the Clintons understand the importance of being sqeaky clean because they are the most over-investigated people in politics — and remember, none of those investigations ever found any wrongdoing.

Why aren’t you commenting on Obama’s disingenuousness?

  • You know Bill Clinton has always been somewhat of a hero to me..maybe I’m a bit naive I’ll admit..but I have to say I’m getting really tired of the crap that the Clinton campaign keeps slinging and I’m really begining to see the sleazy side of the Clinton Machine that has been the mantra of the right wing since the 90’s. I’m not against a tough campaign and bringing up valid questions to vet out a candidate, even if that leads to uncomfortable topics, but man these guys are really begining to turn me off of the Clintons. I used to think I would be proud to vote for Hillary if she bacame the nominee but now I’m not so sure. Her campaign is looking more and more like they ripped the pages right out of Karl Rove’s playbook. Somebody make it stop before I totally lose all remaining respect for the Clintons.

    Former Clinton fan qiuickly souring!!

    r

  • Danp I was thinking the same thing. I have found myself asking the same thing of the Clinton campaign as I have of the Bush administration —
    What are they smoking?
    In what alternate universe?
Do they honestly think we believe their shit?
When will the scare tactics stop?
    Aren’t the 1990’s over?

If this is what we can expect of a Hillary Clinton administration then God help us all.

I had gotten over my snit brought upon by the NH primaries and now they are pulling this shit. I know, I know the GOP will pull some of the same shit and I shouldn’t expect sweetness and light with the Democratic primary, but the way Camp Clinton is running things, there isn’t much a difference between her and McCain (and I ain’t voting McCain). Does she serious want to run as a Republican-type?

  • Makes me think that Hillary has something to hide. Why else wouldn’t she simply release them?

  • Sweet Jesus, Mary, he’s not talking about the 2008 tax returns. He’s asking for the returns for 2007, 2006, 2005 and beyond. The ones that Clinton promised back in early 2007 to release as soon as the campaign was underway.

He’s already released his tax returns for the same years, Mary. You can stamp your feet about how he’s being disingenuous, but once again, you haven’t the slightest clue as to what you’re talking about.

  • Actually, the press should be asking for Clinton’s tax returns. The idea that the press is giving Obama a free ride is dispelled by the fact that they’ve been relatively silent on this issue. It’s disappointing that it’s left to the Obama campaign to bring it up.

All presidential candidates should release their tax returns and any other financial documents (e.g. library/foundation donor lists) that could shine a light on potential conflicts of interest. It’s reasonable for the American people to expect such disclosure and transparency. It’s also reasonable for voters to conclude that, when such documents are not released upon request, that the candidate has something to hide.

  • Obama’s point is unreasonable because tax returns aren’t due until April 15.

And your (we hope) intentional misrepresentation is nauseating because it completely ignores the previous 6 years of tax returns, all of which were filed long ago. She doesn’t have to wait until April 15th to release those, so you can shove your worthless talking point wherever you want to.

  • Appending my earlier comment —

When Obama brings the issue up, the press doesn’t report…”Hillary Clinton Still Refusing to Release Tax Returns and Donor Lists”. Instead they report “Obama Attacks Begin”.

    Pathetic.

  • at this point, it’s clear there is something politically damaging in those records. It explains their overreaction and a willingness to be labeled as hypocrites. whatever is in those records is more damaging than being called a hypocrite. I would not expect a full release of the records in April either. I doubt we will get the full records from 2001 to 2007. I’m sure that they will drag this out as long as possible.

Again, it’s hard to see how they made so much money in so little time in ways that appear perfectly clean.

  • Now, don’t pick on Mary, people—she’s just doing her “imitating Swan” routine to help bend the facts and spin them to her candidate’s liking. Sort of a “mini-me” Rove puppet. As for Clinton, she’s the typical neighborhood bully—good at throwing punches, until she has to take one. then it’s all, WHAAA! WHAAAAAAAA!!! HE’S BEING MEAN TO ME! MOMMIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nice post @ Dale @ 6 and 8.
Much better than the Cleaver sniping, which quite frankly, or quite shirley (choose your gender-safe option du jour) does not become you…

CB: Do we really need to see the amp turned to 11…

I like that too. I think the answer is that the math is pressing down on her like 6 feet of topsoil.
She has got to scream to be heard through it…

That famous Macbeth quote works damn well here:

The way to [ mud-slinging] death. Out, out, brief candle!
Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets [her] hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an [vile] idiot, full of sound and fury,
    Signifying nothing.

  • Obama’s point is unreasonable because tax returns aren’t due until April 15. -Mary

    Oh dear.

  • Hillary is the one looking more and more Rovian as she (a) acts in a way that is hypocritical and extreme, (b) behaves in a way that is directly oppossed not only to her past words, but also her actions, and (c) then complains bitterly and forcefully that THE OTHER GUY is guilty of doing the thing that she herself is doing, and of course, (d) labels and name-calls. Her stategy is old, smarmy, and also very sad. My respect for her, very high only a few months ago, shrinks by the day.

  • Obama’s point is unreasonable because tax returns aren’t due until April 15. I don’t see why Obama should be calling for the returns before they are due, then implying that she has something to hide when she doesn’t produce them EARLY.Mary

Wow. Just wow. I’ll never again wonder how Mary comes to the conclusions she does. Nor will I ever attempt to use logic to sway her. I now understand what I’d be up against.

  • It’s sad watching the Clinton campaign’s descent into madness. At this rate, they’ll be hiring Jonah Goldberg to proselytize about Obama’s liberal fascist tendencies … or is it his socialist tendencies? Whatever port in the storm works.

In the past seven years of Hillary’s experience, I would hope to see that she and her campaign would recognize that the hyperbole, mendacity and demagoguery of the Bushists is a big part of what the electorate in the nation would like to see change. Don’t go down that road Hillary. Godwin’s Law lies in that direction.

  • If Clinton were running a truly “Rovian” campaign, Obama would have been long gone by now.

  • In my humble opinion, Shrillary seems to believe that now that the press has started scrutinizing Obama, she can *try* to do as he did previously – rise above the mudslinging.

You can’t have it both ways – either you’re slinging mud or you’re not. And comparing Obama to dreaded Republicans every step of the way is mudslinging. It’s also engaging in personal attacks that she all of a sudden seems to be so against (which personality are we on now, Sybil?). Obama tried to have a campaign based on the issues, but she wouldn’t allow for that BECAUSE SHE WAS LOSING IT!

I also find it interesting that it was Clinton that Ian Brodie of the Canadian government mentioned with regard to the ‘wink, wink’ to Canada. I don’t have a link handy, but Google Ian Brodie and I’m sure you’ll be able to find the story.

As far as the tax returns go, again, I don’t have documentation, but I wish I did, the Clintons have previously reported incomes of just over Bill’s $200,000 presidential income. Now, if this is the case, how the hell can she ‘loan’ her campaign $5 million??? I’m no accountant, but it seems to me that if you had that kind of cash in savings, the income from interest would be considerably more than what the Clintons are reporting. Maybe this is part of the reason for the delay???

  • CJ, you’re right. The press should ask. What I’ve been noticing since the last debate, is Hillary in the lede more than Obama – her name first in articles, more articles about her, exaggerated implications of the Tuesday results, no fact checking on her statements (like no president has been elected in recent history w/out winning Ohio in primaries…not true), no negative publicity (NAFTA is fairly silent relative to how the rattled Obama’s cage in the psuedo story) and even more photos. People look at photos and read headlines and that’s all they take in, so it really influences the polls. Seems either her whining has worked or the press is drinking the expensive cool aide.

  • Please do NOT pick on Mary. She is just such a sweet lovable TROLL.

Maybe the tax returns would provide part of an answer to this question:

    – Clintons left White House just over 7 years ago & claiming they were broke & $10 Million in debt
    – Hillary’s Senate filings (for her not including Bill) now show a net worth of $35 Million

How can I get a situation where I can gain $35 Million in net worth in 7 years on a Senator’s salary?

By the way: Obama’s Senate filings show him with a net worth of $1.2 Million gained over 20+ years. Obviously not as financially astute as Hillary!

  • You know that “Vast Right Wing Conspiracy” that Hillary was saying smeared her “husband”? It never existed. Bubba screwed (don’t pardon the pun) himself, with help from Hillary. Conservatives told everybody the Clintons were dirty, had evidence to show it, and all that was completely ignored until Bubba got caught in a lie (to a grand jury; a crime). And up until now, the Clinton corruption machine has gotten a pass from “liberals”. And now we’re surprised at what Hillary is doing? Where the hell have the “liberals” been for the last 15 years?

  • One reason it might be interesting to see the Clinton’s tax returns is that in 1978, HRC made some extraordinary profits from cattle futures. Then the Clintons set up a family charity, but forgot to list it on annual Senate financial disclosure reports on five occasions. It included a grant to a “charity connected to the Arkansas businessman who helped Hillary Clinton make $100,000 on a commodities trade that stirred controversy a decade ago, Internal Revenue Service reports show.”

  • Please forgive me for missing an important point, but why do people want her to release her tax returns? And why is it a big deal that she would want to keep them private?

Not knowing why, I’m inclined to think that it’s unfair to make these demands of her when she has every right to privacy.

And while the George Bush and Karl Rove comparisons were certainly over the top, the Ken Starr comparison seems appropriate. The demands have the appearance of the same purpose as Ken Starr, so someone can dig through her records so they can look for evidence of some as-of-yet-undiscovered crime.

  • All right SteveILL…

    Just gettin’ warmed up…

Best humor of the last 24 hours = Anderson Cooper (CNN) doing a feature on Cindy McCain & asking “Is she really this perfect?” & then answering in the affirmative.

At least if Billary is the candidate this fall, we can hear about Cindy McCrap admitting on national television (1994) that she is a ‘junkie thief’. Not likely to get to hear about this if Osama (whoops – slip of the tongue again – just like a good rethugnican) is the nominee!

  • Rian:

She loaned her campaign $5MM from a joint account. Given their new found wealth over the last seven years and the rumbles about the financial relationships Bill has been leveraging over those years, I think the Democratic party better get a peek at that information before we get too much further down the road.

I’m pretty sure her accountants can get us copies of 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 in less than an hour. Not sure what the big deal is. She has been vetted, right?

  • If Clinton were running a truly “Rovian” campaign, Obama would have been long gone by now. -katyfitz

Unless they are running a Rovian campaign ineffectively against a more skilled opponent than anyone Rove ever faced and without some of the advantages Rove had with Bush, like superior fundraising.

But she clearly is attacking Obama’s strengths and shooting for the 51% win (otherwise, why would she allow an advisor to claim unchecked that some states are insignificant?).

She’s also clearly using an unnatural form of math where someone who is behind in the popular vote and the delegate count is a front runner.

And now we’re surprised at what Hillary is doing? -SteveIL

I don’t think all of us are, and certainly not all of us are enamored with the Clintons.

By the way SteveIL, I owe you an apology. (Don’t let anyone ever say I won’t admit to being proven wrong!) You were right on about Jack Ryan’s custody hearings the other day. I was incorrectly looking at the divorce hearings, which is what he agreed to release. My bad.

  • “Ken Starr”-like? For an opponent to imitate Ken Starr, Bill would have to be diddling one of the interns again.

This is sounding like tin-hat time in Hillaryland.

  • Wolfson and Hillary once sang from a different song sheet. ‘a trip down memory lane’:

Eight years ago, when Hillary parachuted into NY to become our Senator, she and Howard Wolfson became completely obsessed with opponent Rick Lazio’s tax returns, which he did not release until the end of August..

They talked about them at every opportunity. In early July, Hillary called it “frankly disturbing.”

A guy in an Uncle Sam outfit was dispatched to be a nuisance at various Lazio events in August. Howard himself showed up once to try to rattle Lazio by offering him a copy of some Chappaqua property tax receipt after Lazio said he’d release his state returns as soon as Hillary released hers (which didn’t exist, because she had just moved up here).

Darn that past and all that phony indignation ..even the phony indignation keeps catching up to you and it won’t go away.

  • doubtful #38, By the way SteveIL, I owe you an apology. (Don’t let anyone ever say I won’t admit to being proven wrong!) You were right on about Jack Ryan’s custody hearings the other day. I was incorrectly looking at the divorce hearings, which is what he agreed to release. My bad.. No problem.

  • For awhile there, I was happy to have either Clinton or Obama as President.

She is acting more and more like there is really no difference between herself and McCain. Thus, we really need to defeat both Clinton and McCain. She is no Democrat, acting like this.

  • And WTF is Howard Dean smoking these days?? I digress but jesus these people are really begining to look like dinosaurs of the 90’s. It’s time to move on and make a change from the same old tune.

  • Rian Meuller: “Please forgive me for missing an important point, but why do people want her to release her tax returns? And why is it a big deal that she would want to keep them private?

    Rian —

Read the second paragraph in CJ’s post…number 18 above.

  • Folks, don’t pick on Mary. It’s her job to sit in Clinton campaign HQ and send out these emails everyday.

  • Geeze all this crap about tax returns. I don’t have to file until April 15 shouldn’t Clinton have the same right? If all you Obama lovers want to check on something go after him on Rezko there is dirt there and plenty of it.To think that this guy Obama is so unqualified for the job tells you nothing about his plans except change. Does he think he can get more cooperation form the republicans then Clinton. The only change that will be different from Clinton will be the color of the person in the White House. Which would seem to suit all of you here!

  • Folks, don’t pick on Mary. It’s her job to sit in Clinton campaign HQ and send out these emails everyday.

I’m starting to think she’s actually an Obama double agent, sent here to make Clinton supporters look like idiots.

    If so, Mission Accomplished.

  • Geeze all this crap about tax returns. I don’t have to file until April 15 shouldn’t Clinton have the same right?

Does she have until April 15th to file her returns from 2001-2007? Because that’s what’s at issue here.

If all you Obama lovers want to check on something go after him on Rezko there is dirt there and plenty of it

Really? Could you explain exactly the dirt is? I mean, be specific. Because everything I’ve read has nothing but broad hints and allegations of always unstated impropriety. After all the dark whispering over Whitewater, you’d think a Clinton supporter would avoid trying the same crap.

  • Smiling Dixie:
The Clinton’s have made a ton (if not most) of their money from public speaking and book deals. Understandable for people that are so well known, recognized and respected. I’m sure their are profits from investments as well.

  • Hillary displays her self-centered arrogance that “rules” are only honored if she benefits. She claims she was co-President during Bill’s eight years in the W/H. She proved how she punishes those who dared rile her, using revenge as a weapon. Power in the hands of the wrong people can create pain and suffering. Will the Clintons release the documents of her years in the White House? Will they take a lie detector test to guarantee that no documents were removed? Sandy Berger had access to highly classified terrorism documents at the National Archives. Failure to follow the extremely strict security guidelines was a bonus for Berger. He was eventually accused of stealing documents, but claimed that he had only borrowed a few copies to study, which he later returned. At his trial, the DOJ let Berger off on a misdemeanor charge and surrender of his license. He should have been required to submit to a lie detector test. It was later discovered that the top- secret original documentation from the National Security Council, with hand-written notes(no inventory, copies existed) covering the Clinton Administration handling of the terrorism threats were MISSING from the National Archives. The 9/11 Commission report was a waste of time and money, due to incomplete data. We will never know the full truth about how 9/11could have/should have been prevented. Guess whom Hillary has picked to be on her National Security Team? Give that man a cigar! It’s Sandy Berger.

  • I am finding these whiny comments by Obama supporters quite amusing. Its pretty obvious that neither Obama nor his supporters will be able to withstand a real campaign come fall. All of you carry on about what Clinton says or doesn’t say. Do any of you think that McCain is going to give Obama the free ride he has gotten so far in the campaign? I keep reading how Clinton is being “negative” towards Obama. WOW! Do you think for even one second that McCain is not going to use all of this and more?
To me its pretty obvious that Obama’s inexperience isn’t limited to foreign affairs. It appears his naivete extends to campaigning as well. Did Obama and all the children that are supporting Obama get their itty bitty feelings hurt??? Grow up!! I hope Obama gets the nomination. I truly do. Then when McCain does to him what Nixon did to McGovern in 1972 all the children supporting Obama will drop out of politics again (nothing unusual it has happened many times in the past) and the Democratic Party can spend at least the next 16 years crying some more (eight years for McCain and eight years for his VP)

  • Sara do not see any whining here except from the Clinton supporters. It is important for all candidates to put their tax returns out their and it wasn’t this years it was previous years tax returns.Bill Clintons finances are indeed suspect and Mrs Clinton not being willing to release them makes it look really bad. This blog is one of the few I have learned new things from that I can in fact verify from archives in the news media..IMO the Clinton years were not much better than the Bush years. At least he tried to get Bin Ladin Mr Clinton did not think Bin ladin was important enough to go after (WRONG DECISION) Look at what happened.President Bush had to clean up the mess the Clintons left.
