Fitzgerald still looking at Rove

Robert Luskin, Karl Rove’s attorney, is fond of telling reporters that prosecutors in the Plame scandal told him that Rove is not a “target” of the inquiry. Regardless of the debate between the meanings of “target” and “subject” in the context of prosecutorial interest, Patrick Fitzgerald’s team sure does seem interested in Rove now.

To its credit, ABC News staked out the Plame grand jury late last week, just to see who was going in to testify. (Why other media outlets didn’t think to do this is a mystery to me.) So, who appeared? The Note has the scoop.

Based on ABC News sources (and our own video camera) it appears that at least two witnesses testified before the grand jury last Friday, both close associates of Karl Rove.

ABC News has learned that one was Susan Ralston, Rove’s long-time right hand. The other, per ABC News’ Jake Tapper, was Israel “Izzy” Hernandez, Rove’s former left hand (and now a top Commerce Department official). It isn’t clear if either had been asked to testify before last week.

The conventional wisdom held that Fitzgerald’s investigation had more or less wrapped up months ago and he was simply waiting to see if he could get testimony from Judith Miller and Matt Cooper. The fact that the grand jury heard from two of Rove’s top deputies just four days ago clearly tells us that Fitzgerald’s probe is not only ongoing, but continues to collect new information.

It also reinforces the notion that the investigation continues to focus in on one person: Karl “Turd Blossom” Rove.

We all keep hoping. Go get him Mr Fitzgerald. Send him straight to jail.

  • Psst! This is a leaker. I’ve got a hot tip for you. This is a six-pack of secret with a double twist of super duper lime.

Rove is a turd blossom. No really, it’s not just a nickname. He’s a humanoid fungus sprung from a Texas bull’s cow patty. Many Texan Republicans are fungus. Just look at Karen Hughes! There is no possible way that woman has reproduced except by spores.

  • It’s nice to see journalists starting to play to role of, well journalists. Really I think some the reporters must joined up with a 12 step group like reporters anonymous and are actually on the road to recovery. Maybe if we keep encouraging them we can help them return to useful reporterdom.

  • Yesterday Bush publicly expressed “complete confidence” in Karl Rove in spite of everything that’s going on. This is either a ) incredibly stupid and a major tactical error, b ) a calculated ploy to buy time before the indictments come down, or c ) a signal that he thinks he’s got inside information and is now confident that nothing harmful to him or Rove will come out of the grand jury investigation so he’s starting the celebration early.

I really don’t know which one is true, but I earnestly hope it’s either one of the first two or that the third one is based on a mistaken belief on Bush’s part.

  • Or, d) no “inside information” but he knows he can sign a Presidential Pardon, for instance?
