Friday’s Mini-Report

Today’s edition of quick hits.

* Good news this morning in the House: “Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), the House Majority Leader, postponed a press conference announcing new reforms of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act after progressive lawmakers banded together and said they would fight any legislation that did not include a set of eight principles on wiretapping that preserve the ‘rule of law.’ ‘What’s most significant is that the Progressive Caucus came together and said to the leadership that all 72 of us require that these provisions be included,’ said Caroline Fredercikson, Legislative Director for the American Civil Liberties Union. ‘This changes the dynamic significantly.'”

* NYT: “Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice ordered new security procedures today for American diplomatic convoys in Iraq amid continuing repercussions over the shooting of Iraqi civilians by employees of the Blackwater USA security company.” And since Rice’s State Department has covered for Blackwater before, the agency has credibility, why?

* The Burmese streets aren’t quite as chaotic, but the crackdown continues: “Myanmar’s junta said Friday that hundreds of Buddhist monks were detained during its crackdown on pro-democracy activists and that it was hunting for four more clerics it described as ringleaders of the uprising. The government insisted that most of the monks had already been freed, with only 109 still in custody, according to an official statement broadcast on state TV.”

* The Brass and the Dems seem to be on the same page: “Four and a half years after the nation’s top military leaders saluted and fell in behind President Bush’s pre-emptive invasion of Iraq, their replacements are beginning to question the mission and sound alarms about the toll the war is taking on the Army and the Marine Corps…. ‘It’s part of a sea change,’ said Loren Thompson, a military analyst at the Lexington Institute, a national-security research center in Washington. ‘The ideologues have been replaced by managers who view Iraq not as a cause, but a problem to be solved.'”

* I have no idea if this is true, but if it is, it’s incredible: “The male escort responsible for the downfall of Christian evangelist leader Ted Haggard is now alleging that embattled Senator Larry Craig also came to see him.”

* On a related note, Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) suggests censure, not expulsion, is more likely for Craig.

* Ackerman: “Associated Press spokesman Jack Stokes confirms today that the AP still hasn’t received a videotape confiscated by U.S. troops on Wednesday.”

* Josh Marshall: “Verbal gymnastics are more offensive when they’re about oral sex than they are when they’re about state-sanctioned torture.” That does seem to be the prevailing wisdom in DC.

* David Brooks believes Republicans are falling apart because they’ve strayed from Burkean roots. John Cole has a more compelling explanation.

* I genuinely love it when candidates campaign on a pro-science platform: “In a stinging critique of Bush administration science policy, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York said yesterday that if she were elected president she would require agency directors to show they were protecting science research from ‘political pressure’ and that she would lift federal limits on stem cell research.”

* Chris Matthews’ preoccupation with Mitt Romney’s appearance is a little odd.

* Scott Jennings, the Karl Rove aide who helped deliver legally-dubious partisan briefings to government employees in government buildings on government time, is also resigning from the White House.

* American Spectator editor-in-chief R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr. said Rush Limbaugh has “already apologized” for his September 26 “phony soldiers” comments. He hasn’t.

* The NYT editorial board believes Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas may not be “impartial” in hearing cases. You don’t say.

* Glenn Beck to Sharida McKenzie, a Muslim American who recently organized the Muslim Peace March: “[Y]ou’re reasonable. How do we know the difference between you and those that are trying to kill us?” (Note to CNN: your credibility suffers a little more for every second you keep this clown on the air.)

* You, too, can get a love message from Rep. Chris Shays (R-Conn.).

* What is it with these conservative Republicans and their sex scandals? The latest is a local official in Louisiana, who’s running for the state Senate, who has been stopped twice for suspicion of engaging in lewd behavior in public restrooms. (thanks to WB)

* Great new DNC ad on Republicans avoiding minority groups.

* And finally, Elizabeth Edwards continues to be the toughest campaigner on the national scene. Yesterday, she went after Limbaugh: “My classmates went to Vietnam, he did not. He was 4F. He had a medical disability, the same medical disability that probably should have stopped him from spending a lifetime in a radio announcer’s chair; but it is true, isn’t it? If he has an inoperable position that allows him not to serve, presumably it should not allow him to sit for long periods of time the way he does.”

Anything to add? Consider this an end-of-the-day open thread.

I have no idea if this is true, but if it is, it’s incredible: “The male escort responsible for the downfall of Christian evangelist leader Ted Haggard is now alleging that embattled Senator Larry Craig also came to see him.”

That is one happening male escort.

  • Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) suggests censure, not expulsion, is more likely for Craig.

Maybe Brownback just misread the hand signals from Republican leadership.

I genuinely love it when candidates campaign on a pro-science platform: “In a stinging critique of Bush administration science policy, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York said yesterday that if she were elected president she would require agency directors to show they were protecting science research from ‘political pressure’ and that she would lift federal limits on stem cell research.”

She actually went a little further than that, promising an Executive Order preventing political interference with scientific studies. Maybe the officially-sanctioned dumbing down will end someday after all.

And finally, Elizabeth Edwards continues to be the toughest campaigner on the national scene. Yesterday, she went after Limbaugh

Unfortunately, she is becoming a bit of a caricature — everytime she opens her mouth it is to attack someone else, with little regard to whether or not they are really the opposition. She also went after Sen. Kerry today for conceding so early in 2004. Not much can be done about that, and it would be nice if the fire remained focused on the Rethugs.

  • I have no idea if this is true, but if it is, it’s incredible: “The male escort responsible for the downfall of Christian evangelist leader Ted Haggard is now alleging that embattled Senator Larry Craig also came to see him.”

Well, I’m willing to wait and see what falls out of this, but there’s always been the possibility that someone would show up claiming to have entertained Larry Craig in the past if he indeed is a closeted gay man.

Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) suggests censure, not expulsion, is more likely for Craig.

This tidbit may make the Senate rethink its forthcoming treatment of Craig. Right now, they’re probably only thinking that Craig didn’t actually do a gay come-on but foolishly pled guilty to the sting charges, thought the matter would never become public, so never told them. I don’t know for sure, but I’ll bet if they believe that he actually HAS been cruising for and indulging in gay sex, it might change their tune.

    We’ll see…

What is it with these conservative Republicans and their sex scandals? The latest is a local official in Louisiana, who’s running for the state Senate, who has been stopped twice for suspicion of engaging in lewd behavior in public restrooms. (thanks to WB)

Just more of the same sickness that seems to have permeated the Repulican party? It must have been going on a LOT longer than most of us realize for word to get around political circles that this is the party for those with sexual problems, particularly those whose drive is to cruise for gay sex.

  • Is it just me, or do people get the feeling that after all the hay righwingers have made over MoveOn, pins and Limbaugh, they’ve slipped even further?

The media still played along, lots of volumen, the wingnuts stayed in line, Dems caved… and the GOP seems more pathetic than ever before. I’m not even afraid of them any more. They make me laugh, but in a sad way.

  • I’m surprised there’s no mention of COL. Davis’ resignation. He is the chief prosecutor of the Military Commissions. He alleged improper interference from the Pentagon. He lost. This is also the same COL Davis who threatened to prosecute MAJ Mori for speaking to the Australian media. Details at SCOTUSblog.

  • Scarmentado

    I love it! Great link!

It’s time those poor rightwing religious suckers saw where their money was going! I hope the whole world sees those leaders for the greedy hypocrites they are and they sink back into the dark swamps whence they erupted!

  • Hey, Scarmentado, you’re talking about my homie here!

This “holy crap” has been going on for the last forty years, but Oral Roberts’ son and successor Richard has taken the abuse to new heights.

The whole empire would be in deep doo-doo if the IRS would do its job and yank ORU’s tax -exempt status for engaging in partisan political activity. Oral was always smart enough to remain apolitical, unlike his fellow televangelists. Richard is another story.

  • I trust that CB will have something to say about the situation at Oral Roberts University at “This Week in God” tomorrow.

  • I’m surprised nobody here is talking about this:
    http://thinkprogress.org/2007/10/04/national-guard-education/

First, they yank the *National* Guard from home and send them to a foreign occupation, for nearly 2 yrs. And *then*, they cheat them by ONE EFFING DAY, to deny them their rightful benefits.

Hiring people for 39hrs a week, so that they can be labeled as “part-time” and don’t have to have health insurance or any other bennies is repulsive enough trick, but, *this*??? It’s beneath contempt…

  • I agree with Elizabeth…about a lot of things. Limbaugh is a cancer and Kerry should not have conceded so early.

Zeitgeist: I do not find anything about Elizabeth to be a caricature…I would say she is a real straight talking, intelligent and compassionate human. We just aren’t used to hearing real people speaking forthrightly in the national arena.

    Life is NOT a campaign.

  • I don’t know how many (if any) of you keep up on this, but since CB has posted on this before, I thought you might be interested. I find they’re always a fun read.

Pentagon’s Gay Bomb Wins Ig Nobel Prize

The U.S. Air Force won the Ig Nobel Peace Prize this year for its proposal to develop a “gay bomb” — a chemical weapon that would make enemy soldiers want to make love with each other, not war with the enemy.

  • A scandal involving Oral………Roberts.

The professors also said their dismissals came after they turned over to the board of regents a copy of a report documenting moral and ethical lapses on the part of Roberts and his family. The internal document was prepared by Stephanie Cantese, Richard Roberts’ sister-in-law, according to the lawsuit.

An ORU student repairing Cantese’s laptop discovered the document and later provided a copy to one of the professors.

It details dozens of alleged instances of misconduct. Among them:

    • A longtime maintenance employee was fired so that an underage male friend of Mrs. Roberts could have his position.

    • Mrs. Roberts — who is a member of the board of regents and is referred to as ORU’s “first lady” on the university’s Web site — frequently had cell-phone bills of more than $800 per month, with hundreds of text messages sent between 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. to “underage males who had been provided phones at university expense.”

    • The university jet was used to take one daughter and several friends on a senior trip to Orlando, Fla., and the Bahamas. The $29,411 trip was billed to the ministry as an “evangelistic function of the president.”

    • Mrs. Roberts spent more than $39,000 at one Chico’s clothing store alone in less than a year, and had other accounts in Texas and California. She also repeatedly said, “As long as I wear it once on TV, we can charge it off.” The document cites inconsistencies in clothing purchases and actual usage on TV.

    • Mrs. Roberts was given a white Lexus SUV and a red Mercedes convertible by ministry donors.

    • University and ministry employees are regularly summoned to the Roberts’ home to do the daughters’ homework.

    • The university and ministry maintain a stable of horses for exclusive use by the Roberts’ children.

    • The Roberts’ home has been remodeled 11 times in the past 14 years.

  • Michael W, @15

Hysterical; thanks for the link. It also explains why Rush had been travelling with Viagra — he wanted to get up to normal speed faster, after travelling…

  • I had to know whatthe answer to Beck’s question was. I clicked.

The answer: Get to know more Muslims.

Beck knew this would mean committing time to learning something so he quickly finished the interview concluding, I assume, that it had been a total waste of time asking for the secret code all Muslims have to pass signals about their plan to raise the Caliphate over the great Satan.

Beck needs to be on Fox. Seeing a coherent, personable Muslim refuse to accept Beck’s baiting might help weaken their prejudice a little. Compared with some of the Fox crew, they could do worse than Beck.

  • Chris Matthews’ preoccupation with Mitt Romney’s appearance is a little odd.

Chris Matthews is a little odd.

His preoccupation with sex is fucking bizarre. Did you see him on Jon Stewart? He is, to this day, salivating over the idea of Bill Clinton’s prowess at getting laid when he was in college.

    Fucking incredible.

Matthews is a perv. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but displaying his sex-obsession on national TV?

  • I will vote for Democrats and little L libertarians and isolationists until the crazy people aren’t running the GOP. The threat of higher taxes in the short term isn’t enough to keep me from voting out crazy people and voting for sane people with whom I merely disagree regarding policy. Hillarycare doesn’t scare me as much as Frank Gaffney having a line to the person with the nuclear football or Dobson and company crafting domestic policy.

Wow!! That just nails it right there.

And there it is. Beautiful. Well, welcome Mr. Cole! Glad to have you, and any of your friends are welcome too.

Yes, your taxes might go up (if you’re rich), or down (if you’re poor). But I’ll bet we’ll al be safer and more prosperous regardless.
