Gingrich sees immigrants as ‘more deadly’ than terrorists

The recent story out of Newark about three college students who were murdered, execution style, in a school playground was painful. Adding a political angle to the horrible crime, one of the suspects is reportedly an immigrant from Peru who entered the country illegally. Another suspect is a legal immigrant from Nicaragua.

In light of the murders, Newt Gingrich has a message for the nation: immigrants are more dangerous than terrorists.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Tuesday he is “sickened” that President Bush and Congress went on vacation “while young Americans in our cities are massacred” by illegal immigrants. […]

Gingrich said that the “war here at home” against illegal immigrants is “even more deadly than the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

“The federal government’s incompetence, timidity and uncoordinated efforts to identify and deport criminal illegal aliens have had devastating consequences for innocent Americans,” Gingrich said, in a newsletter.

The Gingrich newsletter did not appear to be a joke; the former Speaker really argued, in print, that we’re in the midst of a war against illegal immigrants, and the ongoing wars in the Middle East aren’t as deadly.

It’s hard to know where (or whether) to start with such crazed nonsense, but my very first thought is that high-profile conservatives, with increasing frequency, seem to be taking the terrorist threat less and less seriously. TV preacher Pat Robertson, who remains a major player in the conservative movement, for example, said members of the federal judiciary are more dangerous than “a few bearded-terrorists who fly into buildings.” This week, Gingrich sees immigrants as “more deadly” than Islamic radicals in the Middle East.

I thought the right believed Islamic religious extremists represented a fundamental threat to Western civilization? Are terrorists dropping on the conservative threat hierarchy?

For that matter, Dave Neiwert raises a good point about just how irresponsible Gingrich’s rhetoric really is.

Gingrich is obviously trying, as have so many nativists before him, to blame immigrants for bringing crime to our shores. Never mind that it’s clear that the crime rate among Latino immigrants is lower than that of the general population, and most other ethnic groups as well, including whites. What matters, for Gingrich, is exploiting sensational cases for political gain, as always at the expense of people who are essentially powerless.

This kind of ugly eliminationist rhetoric is the logical outcome of the rhetoric that has preceded it, declaring the current wave of immigration an “invasion” — everyone from Lou Dobbs to Pat Buchanan to Michelle Malkin to Tom Tancredo to American Border Patrol have declared it such. Couched in military terms, the immigrants thus become an “invading army” — so of course we are now at war with them.

[A]s for the current rise in violence against Latinos, well, I’m sure that Gingrich would assure us it has nothing to do with rhetoric declaring “war” against them.

Gingrich has been unhinged for as long as I can remember, but he’s apparently anxious to crank things up a notch. He must be gearing up for some kind of campaign or something.

Don’t forget…. Gingrich has a history of taking personal tragedy and exploiting it for political gain by blaming Clinton or the Democrats. Remember when that sadly deranged woman named Susan Smith drove her car into a lake and drowned her two kids back in the 1990’s? Here’s what Gingrich had to say: “I think that the mother killing the two children in South Carolina vividly reminds every American how sick the society is getting and how much we need to change things. . . . The only way to change is to vote Republican.”

Google “Susan Smith Gingrich” for the details.

  • I keep reading that the GOP is looking for ways to get the Latino vote. Apparently treating citizens from or descended from Middle and South America with respect is too much of an effort, so if every ReThuglican would chew on a tube of Crazy Glue and stay away from all writing materials or implements, that might be a start.

Are terrorists dropping on the conservative threat hierarchy?

But the terrorists won’t come out and play CB. The fRight Wing needs an immediate threat to work themselves into a satisfactory lather and since there has been a distinct lack of “bearded guys” blowing things up and gays and lesbians failed to destroy civilization by getting married, they look to the immigrants to be the Viagra that lifts their little hate ons.

Gingrich said that the “war here at home” against illegal immigrants is “even more deadly than the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

Wow Newter, unleashes a shrieking attack on illegal immigrants (i.e. anyone who looks like they might be an illegal immigrant) and a Big Fuck you to the soldiers. What will he do for an encore?

Hopefully it will involve a bid for the White House on the “Go Back Where You Came From, Darky/Get Back in the Kitchen, Bitches” platform.

  • Having completely screwed up the war on terror and started a war that only the stupidest people in the country now support, the conservatives are making foreigners the new bogeyman. They tried this in 2006 for time, but didn’t work too well, so they went back to terrorists. I suspect they’ll test drive illegal immigrants for a while, then maybe try the gays again before going back to terrorists.

  • Obviously, we need a Global War On Everything TM to be safe from, well, everything. Otherwise, it’s clear that something is going to get us. And God knows that we don’t want anything getting us. That would be bad.

  • There he goes again. Gingrich is fun to laugh at.

He’s trying to find an issue people can latch onto. A gentleman of Great Expectations has to worry when Matthews hasn’t praised his looks, presence, and smell yet. Newt should ask Mathews where he got his red highlights in the back of his hair. That way they can strike up a relationship.

  • Are terrorists dropping on the conservative threat hierarchy?
Absolutely, social conservatives can get a lot more mileage towards the sort of societal changes they seek from more targeted “threats”. All terrorists apparently get them is a stronger military (not that they complain too much about that).

  • What this country needs right now is a Global War on Newt—and I’m not suggesting that we get all medieval on a helpless litle salamander-type thingie, either (although Republicans do have this thing about erectile dysfunction and Viagra. Just ask that guy named after a can of crushed pineapple—Dole, wasn’t it?)….

  • I bet I was just on the bus and train with several illegal immigrants. It’s a wonder I wasn’t massacred. And I do this every day. I must be insane. Help me Newt.

  • JKap wrote: “Obviously, we need a Global War On Everything TM to be safe from, well, everything.”

Yeah, the phrase, “Global War on Lead Paint” just wasn’t as catchy as the R’s hoped.

  • It is a sad day when Newt (Sorry about your cancer. I want a divorce) Gingrich seems like a viable Presidential candidate. I believe it is because people remember the promises he made and how they wanted America to look like Mayberry. They seem to forget the lowlife scum that he is and how he kept exactly ZERO promises.

Gingrich – Thompson ’08! We’re so fake the law does not apply to us!

  • I am so sick of these trumped up myths that the Neocons are throwing out there. I just did a little research as to who exactly is getting “massacred” in the US and who is doing the Massacring. For the years 2004 and 2005, blacks and whites are getting equally slaughtered and are equally doing the slaughtering. The only other race tracked was “Other” which included Hispanics and some tribes in Alaska. Those murder victims and murderers are a tiny percentage of the blacks and whites killing each other.

Males are doing the major percentage of murders. So, Newt, MEN are slaughtering our youth, so maybe we should get rid of all the MEN? I think we should start getting hysterical about the MEN terrorists. The new (?) threat.

  • There is a huge difference between legal and illegal immigrants. Please, please, stop conflating the two.

I have no problem with legal immigrants.

The fact that some of the people who oppose illegal immigration are nativists or racists does not mean illegal immigrants should be welcomed with open arms. It does not change the illegal status of the immigrants, nor does it diminish the fact that as a national security measure we can’t simply let people come in like they do through the Mexican border.

The same criminals who will bring illegal aliens into Chicago will bring anyone who pays them, including the next crop of terrorists.

And last, we can’t solve the problems of our Southern neighbors by letting them export their unemployed people to the US. The flow is literally never-ending.

  • What’s the problem? Just because something is a fundamental threat to our nation’s existence doesn’t mean it’s the worst fundamental threat to our nation’s existence.

  • “Never mind that it’s clear that the crime rate among Latino immigrants is lower than that of the general population, and most other ethnic groups as well, including whites.”

Is that for legal Latino immigrants, or non-legal immigrants, or both? Not that I expect the rates to be much higher, if they are, among natives and both types of immigrants, but if it’s lower for both groups, then that’s even more embarrassing for clowns like Gingrich.

  • So, I guess all of those low-skilled, low-paying jobs are going to turn into low-skilled, higher-paying jobs. Way to go, Newt.

  • Remember when GOP Senators and House members were saying that gay marriage is more of a threat to American than Osama Bin Laden and terrorism? I do.

  • Is illegal immigration is also the cause of white male adultery?

I’m sickened that young American women, some of them suffering from cancer, are being victimized. The federal government’s incompetence, timidity and uncoordinated efforts to identify and punish criminal and hypocritical adulterers have had devastating consequences for innocent Americans.

  • It’s all part of the evolving GOP world view, which becomes narrower and simpler by the day:

All threats to ‘Murica are the greatest threat to ‘Murica. All enemies identified by Republicans are terrorists. All non-Republicans are enemies. Non-Republicans represent the greatest threat ever posed to ‘Murica. Some Republicans are enemies too. They also represent the greatest threat ever posed to ‘Murica.

It’s kind of awesome in its way.

Yep. According to the scarier fRighties, the fact that gays and lesbians are allowed to walk under the sun in the US (in some places at any rate) directly contributed to Sept. 11th because it made ObL angry. I’m surprised that none of the usual suspects has tried to blame the Minnesota bridge collapse on Massachusetts’s marriage laws. I guess not enough people died.

I also remember nearly dropping dead of an irony overdose whenever the GOP tried to claim a democrat was homophobic (briefly when FoleyFollies first broke, I also think briefly after a comment Boxer made to Rice).
