Goodnight I Say
Guest Post by Morbo
Well, the cat is out of the carpetbag: Steve is off to The Washington Monthly to become a real political animal.
It couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy. I’ve known Steve before there was a Carpetbagger Report. I used to joke about him being the biggest political nerd I’ve ever known (and I’ve known quite a few). One unconfirmed rumor is that he asked his parents for a subscription to Congressional Quarterly for his 8th birthday.
People joke about Steve being some kind of machine because of the amount of copy he generates in one day. It just goes to show what a 12-hour work day can do for you. My head would have exploded a long time ago
, but Steve plugs right along. He lives and breathes this stuff, which makes his analysis so penetrating and thoughtful. The Carpetbagger Report has a truly national (and international) audience, but I’ve always thought it should be larger. Steve’s new home will make that possible.
I won’t be taking the trip over to the Monthly with Steve , so today is it for me as guest blogger. I just want to say thanks to all who have read my posts over the past few years. I know your time is valuable, and I am humbled by the thought that you would spend some of it looking at what I have to say.
I’d like to think I was a good ying to Steve’s yang. Steve is thoughtful and methodical. Although he produces vast amounts of copy a day
, he weighs every word. I’ve observed him write. It’s like you can see the cogs turning in his head (so maybe there’s something to this machine theory after all). My style is more shoot-from-the-hip, and I often tried to break things up with a little humor. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t, and I’m sure there are posts out there I’d rather drop down the memory hole. No matter — it was always a whole lot of fun.
It was never my ambition to blog full time. I simply lack Steve’s ambition and drive in that area. (More to the point, I have a full-time job and two children.) But I had a ball visiting here on Saturdays
, and it’s possible you haven’t heard the last from me. I will be among Steve’s loyal readers at the Monthly. Who knows? I might even offer a comment or two.
Now get on over to www.washingtonmonthly.com to see what Steve has to say.

says:There’s a wee tidbit in your comment, Morbo, that gives life to an ideal dismissed by most on the Right; an issue used to “sissify” the Left when, in actuality, it denotes a liberal or progressive as answering to a far higher caliber of patriotism that the average conservative will never be able to so much as imagine:
He lives and breathes this stuff.
The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Laws of the Land are all “living documents” because the People “live and breathe” them. Such is also the case with the events of this society; happenings that, if permitted, the forces of tyranny would wipe from the backup disc that is our collective thought and sever from the political monitor that is our ability to act through the keyboard of oratory.
Although I will return from time to time and visit the old comforts that these thousands of threads have become, it will not be the same. Granted, the posts themselves will still live and breathe, because we have embedded our lives and breath into them—but it is an “embedment” that will end with the last posting to the last thread on the last day.
In ending, I must first note that I shall truly miss your Saturday morning commentaries, Morbo. They made getting out of bed in the morning more worthwhile. Then, to the special community that was, is, and shall always be the Carpetbagger, I bid thus:
Vivez longtemps et prosperer, mon ami. Adieu….

says:Thanks for your contributions, Morbo. Always enjoyed reading your stuff, often aloud to our teenage daughter, sparking many great Saturday morning conversations. All the best to you and yours. — Bob P.

Hope you get back in the game.

says:Thank you very much for devoting time to keeping us informed about the goings on in the political world. I have always looked forward to your posts on Saturdays and the occasional fill-in on the rare days Steve had another life. Your style is very refreshing and a stark contrast to the well rehearsed spin from corporate media outlets. I hope you find time and another venue to express your opinions.

says:Morbo, for a long time now I have looked forward to reading your observations over my first Saturday morning cup of coffee. I missed you while you were on hiatus with your broken arm (I hope it’s healed up well), and I’ll miss you after The Carpetbagger Report fades away.
Your posts were about religion, more often than not. With you gone, I hope that Steve will be keeping his “This Week in God” feature. Someone has to keep us informed about what God’s zany followers are up to.
I’m looking forward to occasional comments from you at the Political Animal. See you there.
Best wishes!

says:Morbo, of all the things I regret about this move of Steve’s (which aren’t many – this is fantastic for him), it’s losing you that hits hardest.
I’ve adored your Saturday posts. I’ve enjoyed your gunslinging style, your swashbuckling wit, and your delightful finds. I’m having a hard time coming to terms with the idea that my Saturdays will be seriously deficient in the Morbo department.
I hesitate to stick myself this far forward, but damn it, anything to try to avoid that loss: if you decide you want to keep up the guest blogging, you’re always welcome in my cantina. The log-in’s yours should you want it – just drop me a note in comments.
Thanks once again for all the wonderful Saturdays. Vaya con tequila, mi amigo. Viva Morbo!.

says:Sorry, the color was always purple.
Morbo, I’ve enjoyed your commentaries and hope you will blog in the future.
As for you Steve, I’m glad that a well-deserving blogger is getting a great promotion. You and Hilzoy are already a great team.
Steve, I’ve checked out the CB Report at least three times a day for four years. I can’t imagine ignoring this site. Thanks for everything and I’ll see you at the WM.

says:Adios Mr. Morboson.
Not being an expert on “God” or what he was up to the in a particular “Week” I limited my participation merely to lurking and observing.
Take care.

says:Best wishes, Morbo. I’ve enjoyed your Saturday posts for years, and will miss them. I like the religious angle, especially these days as politicians invoke God so often that I fear for our unique separation of church and state. You’ve been an effective antidote to the political pulpit with your common sense reasoning and analysis. It’s all too rare in these circles these days.
I’ll be checking back here from time to time, mostly out of habit, but sometimes out of hope that I might find a ghostly post from Morbo, another gem that reassures me that some of us still walk the road not taken.

says:I’ve enjoyed your commentary as well, and hope that there may be a guest role for you at Washington Monthly or at another fine location in the blogosphere. The main thing that I enjoyed and appreciated in this Carpetbagger community is that so you, Steve and my fellow commenters “live and breathe” the Constitution and choose to be vocal about it. But like other living and breathing things, change is inevitable, good and life-sustaining.
Good luck, Morbo!

says:Morbo, I’m really sorry to lose you. It was refreshing to hear another voice regularly on my favorite blog. I’m glad to hear that you will be joining the rest of the “family” over at PA. Please let us know if you do decide to pic up a regular part time blogging gig. Best to you and your family

The correct way to say it is yin and yang. No ‘g’ on the yin.

says:I’ll miss you as well as this site. I suppose being the worst kept secret on the web meant that Steve’s writings couldn’t help but get picked up by a bigger venue. Good for him, but I’ll miss the place. And damnit Morbo, you best haul yer butt over to PA for some lengthy Saturday comments!
Mark Gisleson
says:I will also miss your god reports. Please consider starting a blog so I don’t have to rely on PZ Myers and Ed Brayton for ALL my religious coverage.
CJ
says:Morbo — Let us know if you find a new home in cyberspace…even if only on Saturdays. I, for one, will be there. Great stuff!
“[The following statement] denotes a liberal or progressive as answering to a far higher caliber of patriotism that the average conservative will never be able to so much as imagine: ‘He lives and breathes this stuff.’” Exactly.

says:Many thanks for all the fine Saturday work, Morbo. As with so many others, I feel like I’m losing a close family member with the demise of the Carpetbagger Report. But life goes on and we’ll always have Paris, to coin a phrase. Have fun out there!! 🙂

says:Thanks, Morbo. I’ve always enjoyed your commentary. Good luck.

says:That was a fun ride Morbo. Your passion for your work showed.
Great comment Steve @#1.
You know how when you move out of a house all the rooms get that funny echo you never heard before … that’s what this feels like. Only you can faintly hear the echoes of lively arguments, troll smackdowns and a bunch of laughs. Last one out please turn out the lights.

says:Goodbye, and thanks.
The Carpetbagger Report has been my favorite daily read (weekends too, of course) for years now – ever since I first found out about it.
See you over at Political Animal.
Again, well done, Morbo.

Here’s hoping you come around to visit at Political Animal.

says:Best wishes Morbo. You were the twist in the TCR martini. Thanks for all the engaging posts. Don’t be a stranger to PA. Questioning higher powers and calling out hypocrisy and stupidity is always called for and you can definitely lend a hand.
Take care.

Oh well. If we got everything we wanted all the time we’d turn into Republicans. Thanks Morbo, may the Flying Spaghetti Monster keep one noodly appendage over you at all times.
Are you SURE we can’t have TWiG?

says:Hi Morbo,
I’ve always loved your posts here, and probably commented more at yours than Steves’s , but no mind. I’ll miss your great THWIG posts, which always were illuminating as they were witty. Gonna miss you dude, let us know where you land, ok?
My final ‘orange, ‘ I guess…
Homer
says:Morbo – always been a big fan, especially of TWiG. I agree, you definitely shoot from the hip more (but then so do I), so I think it always made for some great debates. Wow is religion a touchy subject, even just among people on the so-called Left. So best wishes.
PS – do I consider myself to be a TCBR alumnus now??
Answer: orange

says:Morbo, I’m going to miss you! I’ll miss your acidic humor, your incisive wit, and your penchant for reporting on the religiously ridiculous. I hope you’ll eventually find another place to blog on the weekends. Your talent for oppressing the comfortable is just too good to go to waste.
