Granting the Dems’ wish

In recent months, we’ve seen countless examples of polls showing that Americans’ dislike for Bush’s Social Security privatization scheme tends to grow in direct proportion to learning more about it. Bush launched his infamous “60-day tour” in March to rally support for his proposal, which clearly backfired.

“The more the president goes out there, the worse his numbers,” says Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin, a Democrat who opposes Bush’s plan. After Bush visited Cedar Rapids, a statewide poll by the Des Moines Register showed just 26% of Iowans approved of his Social Security plan; 65% disapproved.

Harkin jokes that Democrats have advice for Bush: “Extend the 60-day tour to 120 days.”

As luck would have it, Bush is taking Harkin’s advice. And then some.

Dan Froomkin noted that the president was in Kentucky yesterday for yet another mind-numbingly scripted event with a group of pre-screened sycophants. Bush, however, gave some hint about his future plans.

“[T]he President’s job is to lay the problem out. I’ve done so here today; I will continue doing so around the country. I’m heading down to Crawford, but after that I’m going to head back out again, and I’m going to spend time talking about Social Security every week until something gets done.”

Really? Every week Bush is going to have another event on privatizing Social Security? For the indefinite future?

Don’t throw me in that briarpatch….

Keepin’ the boy out of the house so’s the damage is limited.

  • This is almost to the point of being “Alice in Wonderland” weird. Maybe Dick just likes to get W out of the White House so he can play with all the toys.

  • Maybe his little one man show will out run “Cats” on broadway..What a BUFFOON !!!

  • BUT WAIT!!!!!!!!!! How much of OUR money is he wasting here? Let the BOZO pay for it out of his DEEP pockets.

  • I personally think this is now just a ruse to get the taxpayers to pay for fundraising trips. Bush and co. know SS is pretty much DOA. But these roadshow stops take up little time and are pretty cheap to put on–and they just happen to get the president touring the entire US where he can attend post-roadshow fundraising events, helping the RNC and local GOP raise campaign cash at little to no expense to the national or local party.

  • What would it take to convince to extend his road show to include lobbying for his judicial nominations?

  • What an ass. What a puerile ass. Why isn’t he flying around the country and telling his crowds of adoring worshippers that we’re at war and that they need to make sacrifices, pay a little more in taxes, enlist in the Army if they’re eligible, and drive their kids down to the nearest Army recruiting station the day after they graduate from high school? I mean, if you believe in a war shouldn’t you show the courage of your conviction by helping fund it and fight it?
Yeah, I know why. And the Democrats need to remind the people of this.

  • I have worked for guys like Shrub. He is basically the political variation on the sales/marketing version of the Dilbert Pointy-Haired Boss. Such people are utterly, dangerously incompetent managers, but are brilliant campaigners and hucksters and love the spotlight– which is how they promoted themselves into management in the first place.

In Corporate America, we shuttled such glad-handing assholes off to “customer visits” and “seminar road-shows” and thus kept them away from the office, so that we could do our work without their meddling, blundering, pompous interference. The longer they stayed on the road, the happier we-all were. We dreaded their return. And our sales-puke PHB’s really did seem happiest in front of a captive crowd, vigorously masturbating their egos. It was a win for everyone.

I suspect that’s exactly what is going on. The few “adults” remaining at the WH are eager to send Chimpy off in AF1 to bloviate in front of a hand-picked collection of worshippers– to keep his ego stoked and his insufferable presence away from the goddamned office.

    Call it “outsourcing the ass-kissing”.

  • Clinton lied about sex, the shrub lies everytime he opens his mouth.I would like to know how long it`s going the dems to start jumping on this guy with both feet.We need a president,in a time of war, in the White House, not in the outhouse down Crawford way. This sixty day trip to nowhere is just another bait and switch game to take our attention away from the other real problems this smallminded fool has managed to create.
