I think I can hear Karl Rove removing Chuck Hagel from the White House Christmas-card list right about … now.
Hagel also got in a gibe at Vice President Dick Cheney’s accidental shooting of a hunting partner last weekend.
Referring to Cheney’s repeated draft deferrals during the Vietnam War, Hagel said, “If he’d been in the military, he would have learned gun safety.”
I’m pretty sure conservative Republican senators aren’t supposed to make that joke. A snide remark about wearing orange, maybe. But combining Cheney’s multiple draft deferrals and Cheney’s hunting incident is a definite no-no.
And speaking of the shooting, this little tidbit won’t do anything to dissuade the conspiracy theorists.
In the only publicly available, official report on last weekend’s accidental shooting by Vice President Dick Cheney, a diagram of a body shows where Austin lawyer Harry Whittington was hit by pellets fired from Cheney’s Italian-made shotgun.
That diagram has been picked up and faithfully replicated by television and newspapers across the country, including the New York Times this week and by Newsday Thursday.
The only problem is that the diagram is wrong, by all accounts. It shows Whittington hit on the left side of his face, neck and chest when Cheney, the Kenedy County Sheriff’s office and the report itself say the wounds were on the right side.
Oliver Stone will no doubt use this to strike a movie deal.
