Harriet Miers gets the nod

Multiple rumors were swirling last week about Harriet Miers being Bush’s top choice to replace Sandra Day O’Connor. For a change, the rumors were true.

President Bush has chosen Harriet Miers, White House counsel and a loyal member of the president’s inner circle, to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor on the Supreme Court, a senior administration official said Monday.

More soon.

Update: Before considering the Miers nomination on the merits, I think it’s worth noting that Miers helped lead the search for this job. In other words, Miers helped choose herself for the Supreme Court — a page straight out of Dick Cheney’s playbook.

Drudge says she’s a 60-year-old devout churchgoer, who’s close to her family and thinks Bush is brilliant. Just what everyone wants on the Supreme Court: Bush’s spinster aunt.
