Has anyone seen Richard Mellon Scaife’s pants?

Guest Post by Morbo

Richard Mellon Scaife is a right-wing billionaire newspaper publisher in Pennsylvania who really, really hates Bill Clinton.

Scaife hates Clinton so much that throughout the 1990s he poured millions into an “Arkansas Project” designed to dig up dirt on Clinton. Thanks to Scaife, the nation was periodically distracted by numerous phony “scandals” during the Clinton years (“Troopergate,” Paula Jones, etc.). Scaife even hired a writer, Christopher Ruddy, to inflate the sad suicide of Vince Foster into a full blown conspiracy theory. Ruddy’s scribblings appeared regularly in Scaife’s newspaper, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Why did Scaife do these things? It must be because he’s an upstanding man of great moral virtue who was outraged by tales of Clinton’s womanizing, right?

Wrong. Scaife is currently embroiled in a messy divorce, and court documents that have come to light indicate that he’s quite the sex machine himself — especially for a man of 75.

Scaife’s wife, Margaret Ritchie Battle Scaife, claims that she and her husband split in December of 2005 after she caught him in an extra-marital affair. Scaife denies this, claiming the couple called it quits 10 months earlier. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette picks up the story:

The Scaifes’ marital troubles first gained public attention on Dec. 22, 2005, with what Mrs. Scaife’s lawyers characterize in their brief as “cruel, calculated acts toward Wife by Husband as punishment for her detection” of Mr. Scaife’s alleged affair.

“On December 22nd in the late afternoon, Wife, in an attempt to confirm Husband’s ongoing affair, appeared at the home of her Husband, peered in his residence window to confirm” whether the other woman was with Mr. Scaife. “Wife was arrested under an absurd trespass charge, handcuffed and transported to the County Jail, where she was incarcerated overnight in a grim holding cell,” Mrs. Scaife’s attorneys wrote. The charges were later dismissed but, in the words of Mrs. Scaife’s brief, “The marriage was over!”

So, according to these documents, Scaife’s wife caught him in flagrante delicto and he called the cops and had her carted off to jail. This is a real family values guy! In light of this, would it surprise you to learn that Scaife took up with Ritchie in the early 1980s while Scaife was still married to his first wife? So the man is, Newt Gingrich-like, a serial adulterer.

I’m getting so tired of these hypocrites. Sure, what Bill Clinton did with Monica Lewinsky was wrong. But Clinton took his medicine, apologized to his wife, sought counseling and stayed with his spouse. (Isn’t that what the Religious Right wants you to do in cases like this?) Scaife, by contrast, just follows his overactive glands from one woman to another.

The Post-Gazette story contains lots of other juicy items, including the Scaifes’ fight over a dog and information about how Scaife shelters his riches to avoid paying taxes. Read it and be amused and disgusted. One can only hope that now that all of this has come to light, Scaife will decide to zip it — first his pants, then his mouth.

A little footnote to this saga: Because Scaife is a zillionaire, he was able to persuade a local judge to seal the records related to his divorce. But an employee at the Allegheny County Courthouse made a mistake, and the documents were, for a few days, publicly available online. The Post-Gazette found them there and ran the story.

Scaife is throwing a fit, and his attorneys are demanding that the newspaper return all documents related to the divorce. To its credit, the Post-Gazette has told Scaife to stuff it and responded by posting all of the divorce documents on its website. It’s good to know some folks in the mainstream media do still occasionally show some backbone.

“Newt Gingrich-like…”

RooDee deserves a mention here as well.

It’s “Republican Family Values” – Republicans lecture you on what your family values should be.

  • It’s good to know some folks in the mainstream media do still occasionally show some backbone.

I’ve been following this story in the Post-Gazette for awhile. They are doing a great job of covering it and the paper is generally a very good one for a smallish market. But don’t give them too much credit in this case. Scaife’s paper the Tribune-Review is the Post-Gazette’s major competitor in the market which likely the source of the Post Gazette’s spinal rigidity.

  • Scaife lost (pending appeal, presumably) in his effort to have the P-G return the documents. I guess he thought he could crank up the right wing noise machine (of which he was one of it’s early founders) to insist the documents never existed? Maybe you can put the toothpaste back in the tube if you’re as wealthy as Scaife, or maybe he’s as loony as many suspect.

Scaife recently conceded that Clinton was a pretty good President, despite his eight year jihad against him. A person with any level of moral compass would have apologized along with that concession, but not Scaife. He has always been a vicious partisan hack in the Atwater/Rove mold who see politics as blood sport, with Scorched Earth as a favored tactic.

I’m not one to wish harm on anyone, but if he becomes the next notch on Cheney’s canned hunt, rifle stock, I won’t mourn for him.

Did you see that Scaife tried to shield the Trib from the divorce procedings by claiming it was a hobby and not a legitimate business interest? That might be the most honest lie he’s ever told.

  • JoeW, I did see that. I also recall that Scaife is loosing money by the fistful on the Trib. He took advantage of a Post-Gazette shutdown a few years ago,due to a printers strike, to expand the Tribs coverage-it was originally a Greensburg paper-to the city and its suburbs. He has also bought up most of the once independent newspapers in the areas surrounding the city. I believe this has dramatically cut into the Post-Gazette’s circulation. I was happy to see that all of this came at a steep price and should he ever loose interest in the “hobby” and stop subsidizing it, the Trib will sink.

  • Actually, Scaife tried to fill the void left by the collapse of the old Pittsburgh Press, which went under during that same strike. Back then the P-G was the liberal daily, while the Press was decidedly conservative. Since then, the P-G has gone more for the middle of the road – in some cases it seems like a combination of the worst of the old papers. It’s still a decent daily, but lacks it’s old charm.

The Trib is something of a universal joke, but with a pretty good sports section. I suspect they’d sell more papers if they only published their sports section.

It’s no wonder the Trib is bleeding money. In order to penetrate the Pittsburgh market, they were offering 7 day delivery of the paper for the price of the Sunday – to very limited success.

  • Mrs. Scaife, 60, contends that the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, one of a half-dozen local Tribune-Review Publishing newspapers owned by Mr. Scaife, 75, should be considered a hobby or personal cause rather than a business investment because the paper has lost $20 million to $30 million annually since it began publishing in 1992.

By that standard, GW Bush was a serially successful ‘hobbyist’ not a multiple-time failed businessman.

  • Couldn’t happen to a nicer scumbag. The patron saint of dirty tricks found with a woman’s lipstick (I assume) on his boxers.

  • I did see the item of clothing you mentioned. They were on fire.

Here’s to the Post-Gazette. I hope the clerk at the ACC is all right, and Mr. Scaife would do well to remember that the average revolution begins with people getting sick of rich bastards throwing their weight around.

    Paging Rick Santorum! Heh.

  • The Trib is just one big “Do as I say, not as I do” publication. Scaife cheating on his wife. Ed Harrel, president of the Trib, cheating on his current boyfriend for a much much younger model.
