Housekeeping note

Today is kind of an unusual day at Carpetbagger HQ, so I thought I’d give readers a heads-up.

Saturday-contributor Morbo will be stopping by shortly with some words of wisdom. From there, I’ll have some posts, all of which will be posted by timer. (I mention this because, if a major news story breaks today, I’m likely to miss it. If I have a post on Greenspan a few minutes after the Vice President shoots an old man in the face, I wouldn’t want readers to think my priorities are out of whack.)

Also, because of my weird schedule, I won’t be contributing to TPM this weekend, though I expect to be back to normal next weekend.

OK, I think that’s it. And now, back to the news….

Another housekeeping note.

Daily Kos made me feel a bit guilty the other day with his note about Firefox (with Adblock Plus) and other ad-free browsers reducing the advertising revenue of our favorite bloggers. Kos was asking for paid subscriptions as an alternative. But another option for helping our blogger friends is to whitelist them in Adblock Plus, i.e. check “disable on http://www.carpetbaggerreport.com.”

I have found that the ads here are never distracting or annoying, which is much more than I can say for the obnoxious ads that appear on most other websites. If it puts a few more pennies in the CB’s pocket, it’s well worth it.

So I’ve whitelisted CB and Kos, and will probably be whitelisting other good blogs as I go along. Screw the wingnut blogs.

Will anyone join me?

  • Okie, I don’t understand what you’re writing about. What exactly is “whitelisting”? I assume it means blocking out the ads, but then you say you don’t mind the ads on Carpetbagger.

    Please explain. Thanks.

If you use Internet Explorer as your browser, my comments don’t apply to you. You are are already seeing all the advertising on the websites that you visit.

Those of us who use Firefox (and certain other browsers) have an add-on called Adblock Plus (ABP). ABP loads web pages intelligently so that you see the content you want, but the annoying ads are never downloaded. I’ve gotten to the point that I can’t stand to be without ABP on most websites.

Some website operators hate ABP because they only get paid when an ad on their site is downloaded. Firefox/ABP users visit their sites but don’t contribute anything to their revenue because they don’t download their ads. I was suggesting that ABP users who visit this site use the option of disabling ABP on this and other sites that they especially like and want to see prosper.

If you use Firefox/ABP, you’ll know what to do.

  • “Does this mean that CB is actually taking a few hours off?”Dee Loralei

Knowing CB, I’d say he probably didn’t take any hours off. More likely he just timeshifted his working hours a bit. He probably skipped something else he would have been doing (like eating, or sleeping) in order to get ahead in his information gathering and writing. Thereby shifting the effort he would have made today to some other time recently.

No fair, Danny, you know me too well.
