Housekeeping notes

When it comes to technical matters, it’s been an unpleasant week here at The Carpetbagger Report, so I thought I should give readers an update.

Last week, after months of constant frustration, I gave up on my previous hosting company and moved the site (it’s actually more accurate to say “my friend Al moved the site”) to the friendly confines of Hosting Matters. This caused some minor inconveniences for some readers on Monday while the transition was being completed. Sorry.

Then, in a series of highly unfortunate coincidences, the new server for my site was overwhelmed on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, keeping us offline for several hours each day. The very helpful folks at Hosting Matters, thankfully, quickly moved TCR to a new server yesterday afternoon.

At this point, I’m pleased to report, everything should be running smoothly. The cache problem that was interfering with the comments section is gone, the text-ad bleeding problem seems to be fully resolved, email seems to be working, and I’m on a server that should keep us going strong.

I apologize for the inconveniences to readers and appreciate your patience. Now, back to the news…

Hey – no inconvenience. I looked on it (down-time) as you not only being an excellent information source; but as an instructor of “…patience, my young jedi”.

How can we complain? Why would we? S.H.

thanks as always!

  • hey C.B.,

Sorry about your troubles, and I applaud your dedication (and Al, and Mrs. C.B., and all your other compatriates — co-conspirators?) for wanting to make this site as user friendly as it is both intellectually stimulating and politically provacative. Bravo!!

Also, I particularly feel special today, as the Comments function now works smoothly without any special sequence of mouse clicks that sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t, with the resulting frustration. AND the ads are where they should be without bleeding over into the text.

A BIG thank you and your mates!! 🙂

  • I am so happy to hear that the problems were yours. I was afraid that my inability to connect to your comments was my problem.

    Me too!

  • I just wanted to report one problem that I’m still having. Apparently the greatest of all bloggers, Doctor Biobrain, has been left off of your blogroll. I’m sure that’s just some oversight, due to the recent switchover. Not that I have any personal interest in seeing him there, mind you, being a completely different person than the great doctor. I just thought I should bring the problem to your attention.

  • Glad you survived. My ISP was “acquired” recently, and relocation issues knocked me off the net three times in the last two weeks (after ten years of flawless service — the old ISP was multi-homed and had their own power generator!).

It’s also wonderful to have access to real server stats, and not Sitemeter guesses at traffic. I’m sure the real traffic has been an eye opener for you. This is one of the best new blogs of the last couple years.

  • Dr. Biobrain: I wanted to mention that the Carpetbagger, in reaction to the potential for sharks with frickin’ laser beams attached to their heads turning up in his pool and national security concerns, has made a command decision to permanently block* all liquored up mad scientists posting from secret mountain redoubts.

    * I totally made this up.

  • Well now that you have changed your hosting company how are your site stats? I know by the names of the people that comment here that there are 20 or so people that are regular commentators but I don’t think that we could overwhelm the servers by ourselves.

  • …I don’t think that we could overwhelm the servers by ourselves.

No, it wasn’t me this week. There have been days that my traffic generated all kinds of problems for my old host, but this week’s troubles were from other sites that share the server with me.

    how are your site stats?

Well, as long as you’re asking, this week has been rather slow. Maybe, just maybe, it has something to do with the fact that it’s the middle of August, Bush is hiding, Congress is out of session, and we’ve had a few slower news days in a row.

At least that’s what I tell myself to make me feel better about the downward trajectory this week….
