Huckabee draws the right’s ire — for the wrong reason

I noticed that quite a few well-read conservatives were pretty livid today at something Mike Huckabee said, and initially, I was thrilled — because I thought the right was rejecting Huckabee’s stated desire to bring the Constitution in line with his religious beliefs.

As it turns out, that wasn’t the comment that drew the right’s ire. This was.

Socially, conservative Western Michigan is where Mike Huckabee has his sights set.

Today, he took direct aim at Mitt Romney– son of former Governor George Romney.

“For those of us for whom summer is not a verb, for those of us who didn’t go to fancy boarding schools on the east coast, for those of us who didn’t grow up with a silver spoon, who were lucky to have a spoon — ask those folks and they’ll tell you the economy is not doing well for them,” says Huckabee.

Now, what I found annoying about this is Huckabee’s faux populism. Unlike his fellow Republican presidential candidates, he’s willing to concede that the economy is leaving a lot of Americans behind. His solution, however, is a ridiculous consumption tax that makes the burden on middle- and lower-income families worse. My problem with Huckabee’s rhetoric is that it’s hollow — he plans to do more to help those “for whom summer is a verb.”

But the right’s vehement reaction was entirely different.

* National Review’s Kathryn Jean Lopez: “Governor, I didn’t have silver spoons or boarding schools or a verb summer, but I know enough to thank God for the job creators, the natural economic stimulators, capitalism. Is this the Republican primary of a John Edwards rally?”

* Dr. Sanity: “What has the Republican Party come to? With all the socialism-lite being bandied about here in Michigan; all the empty promises glibly being made — how are these guys any different from the feckless Democrats who got us into this economic mess to begin with?”

* Ace of Spades HQ called Huckabee’s comments “gag-inducing.”

* Hot Air called Huckabee a “class-warrior.”

All Huckabee said was that those on the lower end of the economic spectrum are suffering in this economy. This is “socialism-lite”? It’s “gag-inducing”?

Huckabee is, to borrow one conservative’s phrase, “manifestly unprepared” for the presidency. But the fact that he’s at least willing to pay shallow lip-service to the concerns of those who can’t qualify for country club membership isn’t one of the reasons.

For some useless hack like ‘Dr. Sanity’ to blame Democrats for the state of the economy just makes my blood boil. Never mind that Bush and the Republicans have been in total control of country’s affairs for the last six years(!), they can’t bring themselves to admit the obvious even as they stew in the fetid soup they created.

Total, worthless scum.

  • Tired of watching the ecconomy go down the drain? It only gets worse as long as George and Dick are in office. Call Pelosi @1-202-225-0100 and DEMAND IMPEACHMENT.

  • Ah, if the people come to understand the Emperor has no clothes, all of the overpaid hacks at Halliburton Tailor and Haberdashery may be out of jobs, no?

Thus the facade is the single most important thing to maintain. No Republican can ever question, apologize, dissent. Iraq is going great. The economy is ideal. New Orleans is well on its way to as good as new. Its morning in America. The emperor appears to have one seriously classy new suit and tie.

Huckabee committed the ultimate Republican sin, the ultimate violation of the 11th Commandment – he spoke a truth that undermines the facade.

  • This is kind of unfair. Those who always privilege ideology over empirically perceivable reality shouldn’t be blamed for their failure to grasp the difference between (populist) rhetoric and (corporatist) substance.

They should just be mocked, marginalized and ignored.

  • My problem with Huckabee’s rhetoric is that it’s hollow — he plans to do more to help those “for whom summer is a verb.”

    You left out the “not”.

My problem with Huckabee’s rhetoric is that it’s hollow — he plans to do more to help those “for whom summer is not a verb.”

  • Heh.

It must suck to agree with Huckleberry and yet feel obligated to trash him just because he’s repeating Democratic talking points (not that he intends to do much to help the middle class).

Poor wingnuts, they’d oppose free beer if the Democrats were for it.

  • While Huckabee deserves to be slapped upside the head for trying to con Americans living in hard economic conditions to vote against their self interest with his screwy tax plan, K-Lo just put a bullet into the head of capitalism with her remarks. Capitalism, as Americans have been ingrained to envision it, is that every American have the freedom to start up their own business, ceate their own jobs, fill an economic niche, bust your *ss and financially succeed in this country. It’s the American Dream. K-Lo is arguing that paying attention to the middle to lower end of the economic spectrum takes money away from the rich who are the ones in this nation that should be doing all the job creation. Katherine Jean really spills the beans that today’s Republicanism is about corporate socialism and screwing the traditional American Dream.

  • Could someone please for the love of Jeabus tell me how the hell the coming recession is the fault of the Democrats? The blankety-blank GOP has been running (or obstructing) the show for YEARS.

  • Could someone please for the love of Jeabus tell me how the hell the coming recession is the fault of the Democrats?

Because it’s never the Republicans’ fault.
    SATSQ

  • Ho-hum, “the right’s vehement reaction” — it seems to define EVERY reaction they have. This crowd seems ALWAYS delusional and ALWAYS seems to be lying about something. The right has let itself be defined by florid, eternally apoplectic screwballs. They’ve become embarrassing. It’s no wonder the ideology has splintered and that more moderate types have deserted the Repugs who probably remember a time when publicly making a fool of yourself wasn’t too productive.

  • I know enough to thank God for the job creators, the natural economic stimulators, capitalism.

I’d think K-Lo should rather thank God for artificial stimulators…

  • how are these guys any different from the feckless Democrats who got us into this economic mess to begin with?

Good luck pinning the blame on the donkey for this one.

CLINTON IS NOT INEVITABLE – JUST OVER RATED WITH A POPULAR LAST NAME!GO HUCK! As for Romney he is a Negative flip flopping flake, I just found out that he has huge stock in all of the companies that are major promoters and supporters of homosexual rights & abortions, he is not going to do anything to these companies or the procedures but try to implement things that would advance them another to advance his portfolio an example of how eloquent speaking politicians are embedded within Wall Street! HE IS ANOTHER WALL STREET CANDIDATE! More like a Political CHRIS ANGEL! I can not wait for romney to get out of the race.He can not win. He is trying to buy his way into the white house and it is simply not working. The only CHANGE he represents is a chng from the current present to another. Everything about him is so scripted. He will make a good VENTRILOQUISE DOLL for the ELITE puppet masters of wall street and the republican elites. He’s TOAST nationally and in Michigan. The only thing that is keeping him in is his own money, cause the people are not donating to him b/c the people don’t trust him. i bet he will go back to hiring illegals to work in his yard. check more out about him at http://www.massresistance.org he is the biggest flake since kellogs! And as for Romney religion if he knew that it did not include black people in leadership positions, why would he join that religion? He is pandering and changing info what ever he needs to get voted in… he is worse than a flip flopper he is a deceiver…

  • RacerX: Poor wingnuts, they’d oppose free beer if the Democrats were for it.

What, you mean “socialized beer”… like in Europe? I’d rather have my beer cold, thank you very much Mr. Libruhl!

  • God’s Law trumps ALL man-made laws including the US Constitution! Thus, ALL man-made laws must be in conformity to God’s Law.

[Good grief, CB, you seem to be on inter-dimensional speed-dial for nearly every flavor of wacko on the net]

Well, Dr. Lofton, just who decides just what “God’s Law” is? Does it include all of Leviticus? Or does someone pick and choose? Do the Baptists choose? Or the Presbyterians? The Hassidim? (Arguably better authorities on Leviticus than Protestants.) Do you really want the government to be able to choose which spiritual authority is definitive on “God’s Laws?”

Perhaps if we were willing to have things play out over the next century or two, a state religion would be a good idea — it has certainly wiped out much of the support for religious belief in Europe.

  • Doesn’t it bother any Democrats that two-buck-Huck’s populist rhetoric is coming from a Rethug? Be it faux or not, isn’t this the historic political role of the Dems? How did this switch occur? It’s amazing. The party of the coupon-clippers is appealing to the sheep-dippers, and they listen!

I just don’t see how the corporate greed heads are going to continance a Huck candidacy. If the evangelicals and a lot of have-nots take over the Rethugs, then we are in for a major political realignment. At least we’ll live in interesting times.

  • It must have been God’s law that got Huck to push parole that rapist/murderer to do it again. Has the Inquisition who implemented God’s laws so soon forgotten. Hukabee is not qualified to be president of the US and thank god (no pun intended) we will never have to worry about that actually happening. How that Bozo Dr. insanity thinks the repubs have a leg to stand on after clearly putting us into this economic mess. All their plans have failed and this economy is the result. No republican will win the WH this time because their insanity has been tried and failed…miserably.
No one was trying to amend God’s laws and the constitution does not need his interpretation of God’s laws. Who cares if he even mentions the economy after those ridiculous comments. That is the straw that broke Chuk and Huk’s back. Theocracy hypocrisy and kung fu fighting. Jesus in his Karate uniform kicks jew butt huh?. What an idiot bigot.

  • I didn’t know that Gods were in the law business so things must be looking up…or would that be down… or would that be from outer space?

I can’t accept anymore of this “revealed” stuff though…I want GOD to talk directly to us, translators might not understand the language.
