I guess a silver medal isn’t bad

Just so readers know, the Koufax Award winners were announced this morning and it looks like I came up a little short. As the announcement post explained:

We almost had a four-way dead heat in this category among The Carpetbagger Report, Crooks & Liars, FireDogLake, and Hullabaloo. Switching little more than a handful of votes would have reversed the order of the top four.

Many people commented on the difficulty of the decision. Congratulation to all four.

There was, of course, only one winner and this year it was Crooks & Liars. Congratulations to John for a terrific year and a well-deserved award.

I’m disappointed about the outcome, but it was truly an honor to make finals. I feel a little like George Mason U. in the NCAA tournament — I went a lot further than most observers probably expected, but couldn’t quite eke out the big win in the end.

The announcement this morning said that the vote was so close among the top four that Digby, FDL, and I are all runners-up. That’s awfully good company for me to be in, and it’s all thanks to support I received from readers like you. Many thanks to those of you who voted. And, of course, we can try again next year, right?

And now, back to the news…

Congrats, Steve. Just wait ’till next year.

  • I tried to vote four or five times, but they were always having issues with the comments section.
    You are still my favorite.
    Scott

  • Tough to be that close and not win. But congrtulations. You’re still the best in my book.

  • Yes, congratulations. Silver medalist. And oh
    so close to number one.

It’s also confirms the good judgment of all those
who voted for The Carpetbagger. We know a
good site when we find one!

  • Nothing to be ashamed of, Steve. You’re among the very cream of the crop – right where you belong.

  • Steve, you are the ONLY one I voted for. Your site is a must-read every day for me. You have an uncanny ability to zero in on the important topics of the day and put things in perspective with your astute comments.

I can always depend on you for expert analysis. Also, the people who comment on your site are first-rate.

So, you might not have come in first, but you had tough competition. Coming out close to the top is something to be proud of.

  • If coming that close gets enough attention for more readers from those other sites to check you out, I suspect by next year the problem will take care of itself (with all due respect to our friends at those good blogs, of course).

  • Outstanding company. If you had to lose, at least it was to another outstanding blog.

The Carpetbagger Report is my first, and sometimes, only stop in the blogosphere. Here’s hoping that next year you have to compete in the sponsored categeory (I think that’s what they call the “its your day job” category).

  • Congrats, Steve. The Cbag report is where I come for my news. Keep up the GREAT work.

  • You were robbed. I suggest either an appeal or a protest march that gets a little out of hand.

  • Steve,
I voted for The Carpet Bagger Report, but Crooks and Liars, Digby, and FDL were, in fact, the others that might have contended for my vote. You are in good company and deservedly so. I hope you will keep up your excellent work, which has too many strengths for me to list them all. But, I most appreciate that your posts are concise, accessible, and timely representations of political news that interests me. Comments are interesting, (usually) civil, and worthwhile reading.

Thanks and best of luck next time.

  • It’s like Crash taught Nuke LaLouch in the best sports movie ever: “I’m just happy to be here…” is the right response.

And it’s true. Out of all the blogs out there, you rose to the point of ending up in a virtual dead-heat. That’s a hell of an accomplishment!

I was totally amazed that That’s Another Fine Mess even got a nomination, let alone made it to the Finals. I REALLY feel like the George Mason folks. And it all began as an alternative to getting really drunk at the next election like I did in 2004 (to the point of staying in bed the next day), which I am too old to keep doing.

I really do think that blogging is going to Change Things, and this one is a leader in that.

    Keep it up!

  • Gold or not, I think its a real affirmation of your work Mr. CB. That’s a very dynamic, intelligent, professional and widely read group to be a part of. It bodes well for TCR’s future that you’re mixing it up at the top of the heap. Thanks for all your hard work.

  • I’m with LynChi, you are the ONLY site I voted for and my main poly-blog.
    Congrats on your good showing!!

As they used to say on the South Side of Chicago (I believe they are still saying it on the North Side…), Better Luck Next Year!!

  • You deserved gold, but there is no disgrace in silver. Keep up the good work and your reward will eventually find you.

I know that reads like I copied out of a Hallmark card, but it is sincere.

  • Strongly agree with all others here. The top four are truly the cream of the crop and no shame to miss the gold by a few votes. Tomorrow is, after all, another day.

We’ll get ’em next time. 😉

  • Edo – This is his day job! Now, if only someone will pay him to do it 🙂 (other than the blogads, which help but aren’t going to pay the bills)

Thanks to all your support guys, it means a lot!

And as I always say, “That’s my babe!”

  • Mr. and Ms. Carpetbagger — congrats to both of you, and thanks for the team effort to provide us with this site. And I’m with the others, you were rubbing elbows with some heavy hitters for the Koufax and did very well in my book.

  • Congrats, congrats–you are my only must-blog of the day and my only vote. Your selection of topics, reasoning and writing are first rate. The commenters are so good that by the time I get here the usual suspects have already made my points much better than I could ever express them. Thanks so much for this site. If we didn’t have such outrageous Crooks and Liars in government right now you would have come in first by a landslide. 🙂 So second is pretty amazing.

  • Just because they had a few more readers vote doesn’t mean you aren’t the best out there.

    Wait ’till next year! Congratulations.

  • Congrats on the silver, CB. You’re in good company. You should be proud.

  • Congratulations. Tried to vote for you on a few occassions, but some issue or another popped up every time. You do a fantastic job, CB, and make it possible for me to actually get work done instead of reading every newspaper and blog out there.

  • To paraphrase Principal Skinner on “The Simpsons”, in one sense, all four of you are winners. But in another, more technical sense, only C&L is. 🙂

    Congrats anyway!

  • well, you got my vote, though it did take a couple tries. (what’s up with that?) the top four all do excellent work.

but the process must be legit, since jesus’ general won his category.

    your manly pal,
    blake
