As you’ve probably heard, the Rolling Stones are starting a new tour in support of a new album. One song, in particular, is raising a few eyebrows. It’s called “Sweet Neo-Con” and the lyrics include this gem:
“You call yourself a Christian, I call you a hypocrite. You call yourself a patriot, well I think you’re full of shit. How come you’re so wrong, my sweet neo-con?”
Now, conservatives tend to loathe pop culture and the entertainment industry anyway, so it stands to reason that the Stones’ new song wouldn’t go over very well. My friend John even asked, “Will the conservatives Dixie Chick them?” I assumed the same thing. Apparently, though, for the right, money conquers all.
Despite Mick Jagger’s new anticonservative lyrics, Republican lawmakers plan fund-raisers at Rolling Stones’ October Washington show. Rep. Walden of Oregon charges $2,000 a head. Reps. Brady and McCaul, Texas Republicans, jointly buy a box. In new Stones song, “Sweet Neo Con,” Mr. Jagger attacks the religious right and the Pentagon. GOP fund-raiser Nancy Bocskor says the concert will “be a really big hit. Most of us in town are in that age group.”
Republican Reps. Shimkus of Illinois and Reynolds of New York plan events at Elton John’s September D.C. appearance. Mr. John called the president “the worst thing that has ever happened to America.” The gay singer plans a December wedding to his long-time companion. Shimkus and Reynolds voted last year for same-sex marriage ban.
Principles, shminciples, where’s the check?
