‘I never thought him an honest, frank-dealing man’

I don’t mean to belabor the Cheney-shooting-incident story, but there’s one more angle to mention.

As you may have heard, this weekend’s accident was the first time a sitting vice president has shot someone since Aaron Burr killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel on July 11, 1804. With this in mind, I found this to be an appropriate Quote of the Day:

“I never thought him an honest, frank-dealing man, but considered him as a crooked gun, or other perverted machine, whose aim or shot you could never be sure of.”

This was Thomas Jefferson’s description of Burr, though the comments seem to reflect Dick Cheney quite well, don’t they?

One question I haven’t seen addressed anywhere: what was the bill to taxpayers for Cheney’s little quail-hunting outing in the first place?

  • It must cost a lot to be prepared for heart surgery wherever Cheney goes. I was going to mention the rough terrain in which most actual hunting occurs, but I forgot: we’re dealing with a “hunter” who goes directly to the lured, set-up victims.

  • Wouldn’t it be a hoot if every Democrat in Congress wore full day-glo orange hunting gear the next time Cheney shows up?

Just watching Cheney’s face implode would be worth the price of admission.

  • “I don’t mean to belabor the Cheney-shooting-incident story…”

    It needs to be belabored.

I am absolutely stunned that the story appeared on page A4 of the supposedly liberal Tucson Daily Star.

    For goodness sakes:

The VP of the US shot someone and we didn’t know about it for 22 hours.

    WTF?

When you assume public office you assume the publicity of that office. Like it or not you are a public figure whose deeds are an open book. The VP ought not to shoot someone and hide that fact for 22 hours.

  • I wonder what he told his (unfortuate) victim- “Sorry, dude, I thought
    you were Harry Reid?”

  • We know he didn’t do it on purpose. Perhaps details will emerge, beyond the 24 hour delay, that cast a worse look on the account I read of it. But if not, while your comment is funny, it does seem a kind of cheap shot.

  • “…but I forgot: we’re dealing with a “hunter” who goes directly to the lured, set-up victims.” – Ed

Maybe Whittington was holding up one of the birds he had shot and Cheney thought it had just arisen from the brush and so he shot at it. Cheney has a twitchy trigger finger. Given the opportunity to kill something, he will shoot first and ask questions later. A “perverted machine” as it were. Whittington should have known better. It’s all his fault.

  • Leave it to Thomas Jefferson to have a quote that discribes our present Vice President. As JFK said once= Jefferson was the most brilliant mind to ever live in the White House.

  • Elderly men fall victim to lapses in Hunters’ Etiquette, for reflexes and the brain’s processing of the reality of present circumstances are impaired by old age. The lack of alacrity is usually compensated for by a great resovoir of experience and simple good manners. Mr. Whittington was where he should not have been, and he suffered for it. Fortunately, his wounds are superficial, eliciting feelings of relief from Men Of Goodwill everywhere. I must wonder at the fascination with this hunting accident displayed by those Common Scolds of the Vitriolic LEFT! Have they no better hook to support their free-floating rage at their own worthlessness? I say, regard them with pity, while ever keeping them in view.
