If he ignores the Shag Fund, maybe it’ll go away

Rudy Giuliani and George W. Bush have more in common than just mendacious, authoritarian streaks; they also employ the same strategy when facing a scandal: ignore it and hope it goes away.

Yesterday, for example, we learned about the latest in a series of lies regarding the Shag Fund controversy. In response to the revelations, the former mayor has decided he doesn’t want to talk about it.

Rudy Giuliani tried to ride out new questions Friday over taxpayer-funded chauffeur services that witnesses and sources said were provided to Judith Nathan before her affair to the former mayor was revealed in 2000.

The Republican presidential candidate, asked by a Daily News reporter after a campaign event in Chicago about Nathan’s city-funded wheels, nonanswered “Thank you,” and later “Have a good night.”

Moreover, the Daily News also emphasized today that when it came to providing a taxpayer-financed security detail to Giuliani’s then-mistress, the timeline doesn’t ad up. Giuliani and Bernie Kerik said Judith Nathan needed NYPD protection starting in early 2000, because of unspecified “threats,” which may or may not have actually happened. As the article points out, “How Nathan could have become the target of a threat before she became a public figure has not been explained.”

That’s probably because it’s a fairly transparent lie.

The Daily News added a provocative quote:

“If Nathan was provided police protection prior to their being a security-threat assessment, it probably was an illegal use of city resources,” said Dick Dadey of Citizens Union. (emphasis added)

Now, Citizens Union is an NYC public-interest watchdog group, which knows the law in this area pretty well. Given what we know, Giuliani and Kerik may very well have had to make up bogus threats in order to justify taxpayer-financed protection for the mayor’s mistress. But as Dadey noted, that’s more than just a lie, it was possibly a crime.

Of course, as a legal matter, it’s unlikely anything would come of this. If Giuliani did break the law here, the statute of limitations has probably run out — misuse of resources in 2000 could only produce charges through 2005.

In the context of a presidential campaign, though, it’s probably not an effective pitch: “Vote Giuliani: Because He Can No Longer Be Prosecuted.”

“… when facing a scandal: ignore it and hope it goes away.”

Excellent strategy in a land as TeeVee-addled as ours. Unlike the old professional print journalists, and the Carpetbagger, TeeVee has the memory of a gerbil, maybe even a sow bug.

  • Here’s a novel concept—prosecute the fat little imp under federal RICOH laws. I don’t think there’s such a short statute of limitations for prosecuting blatant, organized criminal activity. They plotted to do this; they committed multiple crimes and sought—with malice and contempt for the law—to hide these crimes, and they repeatedly lied about them.

  • It might go away but if reporters keep doing their jobs (keep asking Rud!E questions) Shag-Gate might be replaced by Ghooliani Snaps & Attacks a Journalist-Gate.

Even if he does get the nomination, his opposition isn’t going to let this go. I bet every Dem. Candidate already has a draft script of the commercial they’re going to run.

  • they also employ the same strategy when facing a scandal: ignore it and hope it goes away.

It’s worked pretty well so far for Bush.

  • The pot of Shagumbo can be left simmering on the back burner for the duration and pulled to the front for a good stir and whiff of rich, hearty scandal at a moments notice. Rude-E has taken a solid hit. His entire story is sordid and sleazy. Neither Rude-E nor Judi are sympathetic characters.

The story is that Rude-E was so beguiled by Judi at their meeting in a cigar bar that he scored her phone number right then and makes a point of saying that he carries that slip of paper in his wallet to this day. Well the asshole was married with children at the time and that wife comes across as a pretty nice lady. Someone just ask Rude-E if he’s still got that phone number in his wallet at the next debate.

Rude-E’s toxicity is right below the surface. News gets chewed up fast but there’s more than just a weeks worth of hassle in Shag-O-Rama. Prosecution may be out of the picture but persecution, (as in harassment and annoyance), are the order of the day. And being told that his cravings to rule the world are on hold forever after getting so close that he could taste the fear and respect for il Rude-E, will be as good as prosecution. He’s toast. Not burnt yet but very dry and crunchy.

  • Unspecified threats???…I can only think that Donna Hanover (Rudy’s then wife) had threatened to b*tchslap Nathan if she ever saw her back at Gracie Mansion…

  • a blowjob almost got bill cliton impeached.you know the republikkkan christians would’t what that to happen to pat robinson own hand picked boy.
