Is sunshine the best disinfectant? For Obama’s sake, it better be

I’m reasonably confident that Barack Obama is going to win the presidency in November, but I should admit, as foolish as it may sound, my biggest fear is the vicious rumor mill, where nonsense spreads quickly, and far too many decent people struggle to differentiate between fact and right-wing fiction.

One of my cousins emailed me this week with a link to a slick, professional-looking online video filled with right-wing “facts” about Obama, and even she — a Jewish Democrat in New Jersey who voted for Obama in her primary — started to wonder if maybe some of the smears are true. They’re not.

The question facing the campaign has been around for quite a while: ignore the trashy rumors (and possibly allow them to fester unchallenged) or debunk them (and possibly bring added attention to the lies, inadvertently lending them credence). As Time’s Karen Tumulty explained today, Obama is going with the latter with a new site called, “Fight the Smears.”

Obama is enlisting his millions of supporters to help him hunt down and quash these stories, just as those supporters helped him turn his insurgent campaign into a history-making juggernaut. […]

Though the latest and most poisonous rumors about Michelle were ginned up by a pro-Clinton website, Obama knows that — notwithstanding John McCain’s pledge that his own campaign will not engage in smears — more rumors can be expected in a general-election campaign. Trying to kill them with oxygen and openness is a risky approach. But Obama is attempting to find the humor — and the votes — by taking the rumors head-on.

Apparently, talk of the non-existent “whitey” tape, lifted from a novel and pushed aggressively by an unhinged Clinton backer, prompted this pushback initiative.

It may be risky, but all things being equal, I think it’s the right way to go.

I had the same reaction to this as Michelle Cottle.

The crazies, nasties (think Roger Stone) and conspiracy theorists will only get crazier, nastier and more conspiracy-minded as this race goes on, and Obama can’t risk ignoring their blatherings — no matter how unbalanced the charges seem or how many times the campaign has pointedly refuted them. (For the last time, the man is not a Muslim and he is more than happy to recite the pledge of allegiance — hand over heart — for anyone who feels compelled to test his patriotism.)

Obama’s success will hinge in large part on his ability to soothe the gut-level, often subconscious fears of people who are skittish about him because they’re not quite sure if he’s “one of us.” To do this, he will have to be more aggressive than your average white-bread candidate with a boring white-bread name like John McCain. Better still, enlisting Obama’s online groundtroops in the effort seems in keeping with the grassroots, participatory nature of his campaign.

Indeed, as long as we’re talking about this, two relatively new smears have been making the rounds, which I wanted to knock down.

First, there’s been ridiculous chatter in right-wing circles demanding that Obama release his birth certificate to prove that he wasn’t born in Kenya. (Some variations of the smear insist that the birth certificate lists his middle name as Muhammad and his given first name was “Barry.”) Some cable talk shows have picked up the nonsense.

The campaign went ahead and released the birth certificate today and — what do you know — the conservative accusations about Obama are false. They always are.

Second, we should probably take a moment to talk about Larry Sinclair, some clown who made a YouTube video alleging that Obama did drugs and had oral sex with him in the back of a limousine in 1999.

Sinclair is a fringe character, but I bring him up because he’s actually scheduled to host an event at the National Press Club on Wednesday, June 18.

Now, Sinclair can make whatever wild accusations he wants, but it’s worth remembering that his story doesn’t stand up well to scrutiny (during an alleged rendezvous with Obama in Illinois, Sinclair was actually booked in Colorado), and as witnesses go, Sinclair is less than unimpeachable (he apparently has a lengthy criminal record).

It’s curious, though, that Sinclair will get the National Press Club as a platform — one needs a Press Club sponsor to host an event, raising questions about who, exactly, helped get Sinclair a room. For that matter, Sinclair now has a lawyer — Montgomery Sibley, who recently defended the “DC Madam” Deborah Jean Palfrey — and it’s curious how Sinclair can afford such a pricey attorney.

In other words, the steady stream of smears have been non-stop, but they’re not about to go away anytime soon.

Larry Sinclair sounds like a new version of Mellon-Scaife’s Arkansas Project which came up with TrooperGate and the Mena Arkansas drug smuggling .

Maybe some enterprising reporter (TPM?) will follow the money and find out who’s financing Sinclair.

  • Sinclair has also failed lie detector tests about his Obama story, not that lie detector tests are particularly accurate.

Anyway, I’m glad Obama is fighting it with his typical openness and transparency.

  • Countering specific charges is a losing game; you’re always playing catch up. Discrediting the most frequent purveyors and exposing the tactics seems a better way to go, but that has to be done outside of the Obama campaign. The campaign is probably doing the best it can with this site and I’m glad to see them trying.

I heard some right wing talking head the other day basically saying these smears are nothing but politics and it’s up to the voters to decide what’s true. I’m not sure who raises kids that grow into such repulsive adults, but my mother would wash my mouth out with soap today if I said something like that.

  • This is — not unsurprisingly given Obama’s track record for doing the right thing — the way to handle this — that and keeping his supporters from ‘replying in kind.’ (To paraphrase Carville, “It’s the issues, stupid.”)

I particularly was delighted at “Obama is attempting to find the humor — and the votes” because he has an ability to make his opponents look ridiculous. I can’t wait to hear his version of the “Fala speech.”

  • Countering specific charges is a losing game; you’re always playing catch up.

The counter argument is that not everybody has a cousin Steve who devotes his life to knowing all things political. This website empowers a whole lot of Obama supporters. Now if only he had put it in a format that my computer could understand. It’s rapidly getting to the point where you can’t be an informed liberal without new software. 🙁

  • This Sinclair guy is actually going before the National Press Club? I’m seriously worried– there are a lot of people out there who will believe absolutely anything, and if the ridiculousness that this character is spewing lodges in the consciousness of any voters at all, it could seriously harm Obama’s candidacy. Is there any way Sinclair can be stopped? A petition to the National Press Club, or something?

  • and it’s curious how Sinclair can afford such a pricey attorney

    What? No pro bono jokes?

  • The right is becoming increasingly desparate this year. They know McCain is a weak candidate who got through the process more on the other nominees failures than his own successes. They can see the mood of the country after 7 disasterous years of Bush.

Expect these attacks to get worse.

Foretunately Obama seems to have the resources and the smarts to go on the offensive.

And after the last two elections I hope the majority of the public has learned a lesson about the fear-mongering tactics of the right (a possibly vain hope I admit, but a man can dream).

  • The Caped Composer,

I think we need to call the National Press Club and voice your disapproval.

  • Okay, I just called the National Press Club front desk line, and asked to leave a message for the President of the organization. The number is:

    202-662-7500

I highly suggest that EVERYONE here call that number and ask to speak to the NPC President. You’ll probably get voicemail, as I did, but in the voicemail, please state that Larry Sinclair is a prevaricating criminal whose presence at the Press Club serves as an insult to the profession of journalism. PLEASE DO THIS– remember, homophobic smears are among the most damaging to a political candidacy!

  • It’s crazy! It’s like Obama has decided to fight fire with water. Revolutionary.

  • Is there anything the insecure types hate more than to be laughed at and made a joke of?
I wish the Obama campaign could come up with a platform or some way to make a contest of outing information on the backers of Larry Sinclair et al. It could be a weekly game show,
keep it funny. The preposterousness of some of the rumors can be more easily squashed with humor.

  • Seems to me if we ever want to see more good people enter politics we’ll need to find a way to make the smear-merchants pay a heavy price for this kind of shit. I have no idea what can be done, but it would seem that reasonable people on both sides would be interested in seeing some kind of neutral clearing house for smear debunking set up. All the smears have one thing in common; they get no traction with people who are invested in having their credibility endure the election cycle. So I think a commission made up of reputable people from both parties should agree to evaluate the charges circulated and publish their opinions.

  • I called the National Press Club and got a call back almost immediately. The explanation is that they are only renting a room to Larry Sinclair and they did not “invite” him.

  • It isn’t enough to attack the rumours, Obama is going to have to go after the rumour mongers as aggesively as possible. If he has good proof that this Sinclair guy is lying he should be suing the ass off him right now and going after the guys who are financing him as being just as responsible for the libel. Not much chance winning the court case, but it will force the deep pockets to shell out money for something other than more smears.

If they can establish early on that anyone who attacks Obama with anything less than the truth will be pulling the tail of a tiger, that should shut down a lot of the inevitable 527 activity. I don’t know if legal battles over slander against the candidate are legitimate campaign expenses, but if they are, Obama has the deep pockets to take these guys to court and make them pay to defend themselves and that is exactly the tack he should take. It won’t matter whether he wins or loses, just tying them up in court and costing them legal fees will suffice.

  • Time to go on the attack. Go after McSame for playing holy and letting his minions smear away. If McSame attacked the smearers then they would stop or at least crawl back into the dark; he cannot be allowed to hold on to his “sanctity” while benefiting from this crap.

There is no sure-thing answer to this question, though is a just world there would be. Of course, in a just world, there would be no baseless allegations.

Some people will go the “methinks he doth protest too much” route for making the effort to counteract this slander, while others would’ve taken any silence on the issue to be a tacit admittance of guilt. Can’t please everyone.

IMHO, a website devoted to debunking the smears is about as good a way as anyone to go – especially if the Obama camp makes sure the website becomes well-known, and urges prospective voters to visit often “Everytime you hear something awful about Barack Obama that you hope isn’t true, there’s a good chance it’s not true at all, Go to the site and give us a chance to set the record straight before you start thinking the worst about a man whose only crime seems to be he’s running for President and he’s NOT a Republican.” Otherwise, Obama’s only recourse is to spend the first half of every public speaking engagement debunking myths the right made up about him over the past 24 hours. It will constantly put him on the defensive, in public, and THAT’S no good either.

I find one of John Kerry’s biggest snafus was simply not going to town on the Swiftboat Vets for Truth campaign, standing up to it with righteous indignation, demanding to see his accusers in person, demanding they offer him the evidence they claim they had before them. It would’ve made the story a little bigger (but hell, at that point, nothing really would’ve made it smaller untl the media was done picking over the story’s carcass as they did), but it would have made JK look like a fighter. Better yet, knowing the kinds of pussies these 527 clowns are, it would’ve made JK look like a winner. Instead, we have, what we’ve had for the past 4 years.

The site, where lies can be debunked without Obama having to spell out every rumor or tall tale woven by the Malkins of this world, is about as close as we can get to the best “right answer.” And the plus side about a site dedicated to this cause is, the deunking can happen in almost-real time. We know how quickly people were able to take McCain’s “That’s not important” quote and turn it into an anti-McCain ad. Playing “catch-up” will NOT be a factor when enough people are dedicated to the cause, only making sure the people who need to see the info know about the site.

After that, the one negative that Obama won’t be able to counteract is the sheer VOLUME of lies. In other words, instead of the Malkinites of our sad country coming up with one or two big whoppers a week that are then disseminated throughout the internet, picked up by Drudge and then legitimized for the MSM, you might see dozens of anti-Obama rumors started every single day just to overwhelm the site. A visitor won’t be able to find the rumor he’s looking for because of the 80 that have come up since that one. And since more and more of them will be pure B.S, with no evidence to support OR DENY the claim, then Republicans who deep down are all about the “guilty until proven innocent” line of logic, will claim that Obama has to show proof he never blew a billygoat for him to say he didn’t. How do you prove a negative? You can’t, and that will be the biggest weapon in their arsenal, starting rumors that are patently false but with no way to prove they’re not true, either. Keep shoving them down the website, and eventually, people are just going to say “I like Obama, but…I JUST DON’T KNOW…” and as I said before, THAT’S all the GOP really wants. They don’t care if you don’t vote for McCain, AS LONG AS YOU DON’T VOTE FOR OBAMA, EITHER.” Your deciding not to vote at all is a win as far as they’re concerned, and they’ll do what it takes to squelch democracy for the good of their narrow world view and their wallets.

  • Like they say Resistance is never futile. And it’s alway worth trying to state the truth. So wehther Fight the Smears works or not, it’s worth doing.

  • Anyway, I’m glad Obama is fighting it with his typical openness and transparency.

I, too, am glad of this. And the Obama campaign, surrogates, and *all* Dem politicians should work the refs. Preemptively bring up the swiftboat nastiness of 2004 and the MSMs complicity in spreading it waaay beyond its original distribution.

Media pundit/newsperson: : “Senator Dodd, there have been a lot of nasty rumors floating around about the Democratic Nominee, Senator Obama. For example, Larry Sinclair alleges that”

Dodd: “Hold it right there. You do realize that just be repeating the rumor you are giving it more airtime than it deserves. You are supposed to be a news organization not a rumor mill. Shame on you.”

Media pundit/newsperson: “Okay I see your point, but the allegations are very serious aren’t they. After all if Senator Obama did”

Dodd: “Stop right there. Are you really going to repeat noxious, spurious rumors everytime someone puts some video on the internet? or some fringe group manages to put together a TV ad and airs it in some small market? Is that really what journalism is all about?”

Media pundit/newsperson: “Well, these allegations are serious. We can’t just ignore them. For instance, Larry Sinclair alleges that”

Dodd: “Are you listening? I will not be a party to your giving airtime to rumors that have no factual basis.”

    Media pundit/newsperson: “but…”

Dodd: “No buts. No ifs. Do some research? Find out the facts, not opinions. Then report on it. Do your job.”

substitue “Dodd” for Obama, his surrogates and all Dems.

  • …talk of the non-existent “whitey” tape, lifted from a novel and pushed aggressively by an unhinged Clinton backer….

    How funny.

This morning I surfed over to hillaryis44.org just to see what those creepy-crawlies were up to.
Did they throw in the towel? Er… no.

After a scan of the site, and remembering how they deleted my anti-McCain post a couple months back, I’ve got a hypothesis that wants testing: Hillaryis44.org is run by closet republicans who are trying to rend the democratic party. If so, that really is well-played asymmetrical internet political warfare.

I’d like to see two things:

    1) Some investigative reporting done on some of these unhinged Clinton sites.
    2) Some asymmetrical internet warfare launched from the left. There has got to be a way to start a nefarious rumor mill on McCain and other repugs. There has got to be a way to go on the offense and knock them back on their heels. I mean really… for all we know the vietcong put a commie chip in John and are going to start broadcasting orders to him once he becomes president.

    It really is scary stuff.
    And yeah… I am totally+totally serious.

  • Slappy

I don’t think Obama’s website is going to totally solve the swiftboating problem, though it probably will for many political junkies who hang out on the internet.

This garbage is being sent into people’s consciousness through trash newspapers (GLOBE & ENQUIRER) and TV as well — the Larry Sinclair filth is all over the place, and the people who read this garbage don’t get their information from the internet. It will get worse unless something is done to stop it fast.

We know he’s a criminal and has failed lie detector tests about his Obama claims, but majun and Caped Composer probably have the right idea — find out who his backers/financiers are and go after them with everything. It seems that the more outrageous the lie, the more willing ignorant people are to believe it. And ignorant people vote, too.

  • I know a guy named Harry Pinclair. I just spoke with him. He said if the price is right, he’ll let me shoot a videotape in which he claims to have done heroin, meth, and coke with John and Cindy McCain in the back of a Hummer, and then had both oral and anal sex with each of the McCains.

  • aristedes, it’s like I said, there is no sure-fire answer to get truth out, especially when so many people really want to believe the lies. It’d be great if the MSM made a daily habit of debunking lies about Obama, even to the point of making it a regular segment of the news, like an “Bullshite about Obama du Jour” kinda thing. But they won’t, maybse with the exceptions of Stewart & Olbermann, where they’re preaching to he choir. But the word has to be spread somehow, and at least with a website like this, Obama supporters also have a one-stop-shop/link to send their right-wing coworkers and cousins and to hit “reply all” to chain emails they get from people who claim they’ve got “the real scoop on Hussein Obama.” More than once, I’ve done something like that, usually with some dopey urban legend where I hit “reply all” and send people to a snopes.com link. It won’t be the only solution, but it could be a big part of it.

  • One can also go to http://www.snopes.com, the site that researches all kinds of internet/email rumors, etc. And it is independent of the Obama campaign (though I’m glad they’re doing this). There’s a ton of information on snopes, here are the ones on Obama: http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/obama.asp

Note how many are marked red or partly red (false) – 14. This one in particular:
    http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/muslim.asp
    Has a lot of information.

    Here’s one on Michelle Obama’s thesis: http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/thesis.asp

I’d encourage us to send links to this website to everyone to help combat the lies.

There are also a ton of false email stories on John Kerry and the Clintons.

On the other hand check out snopes’ section on McCain: http://www.snopes.com/politics/mccain/mccain.asp
Only three: two true, one undetermined

Pretty much gives you an idea which side is doing the smearing/lying.

  • #25 yep, I’ve done that too. Reply all with a link to snopes. It’s the most responsible thing to do.

  • Fight back. Swamp the media organizations that enable the smears by lending the credence of a public face!

Email the National Press Club at info@press.org

Let them know that Larry Sinclair is a prevaricating criminal whose presence at the Press Club serves as an insult to the profession of journalism and that they are facilitating politically motivated lies and that is just not a moral thing to do!

  • Hey,

If you’re look for massive debunking of Sinclair (SickLiar, papatard…whatever name you choose) check out http://themitchandnanshow.wordpress.com/. They been walking the papatard beat for quite some time.

Basically, he’s a sociopath bilking the morons, racists and Obamaphobes for anything he can get. Best example – on the NPC trip he’s claiming a $700 flight from Duluth to DC actually will cost $1500.

He’s in the process of suing three bloggers who…um…called him a liar. He did this in an attempt to garner media coverage and force Obama to testify in court as to whether Obama got blown by Sinclar and smoked crack. Yeah. That hasn’t worked out too well.

There’s an hysterical interview with Opie and Andy on YouTube that’s worth a listen.

  • I agree. Jennifer Flowers is an absolute liar. And what’s all this crap about Bush taking cocaine. These clowns should be shot.

  • We have been emailing the DNC for over a year, asking them to stop these rumors, and NOW Mr. Obama and his minions decided to listen? A little too late, I think. We begged to all his camp to stop it before it got serious, but, they ignored our request. We have dozens email showing us begging them, and they refuse to acknowledge us, so We are to believe them now and not think this is another attempt as Rev Wright, Ayers, and all other issues that have being addressed to late by his camp. He has lousy advisors in our opinion to let this go on for over a year. So, Now, that the ugly Head is out, he decides to try to throw water? I say a little bit too late, the damage has been done. I think we will give LS the chance to explain and if we don’t believe him- we will see who to support.

  • You are wasting your time. The NPC has already been notified of Obama trying to deny Sinclair’s right to free speech. They are not as stupid as your candidate and his ‘bots and they’re probably loving the publicity, and so in the end you are helping the cause.

  • I have been scrutinizing Obama, his character, his past and his past
associations. I have also had many conversations with Larry Sinclair
as well as the Chicago restaurant owner/chef that heard persistent
rumors of Obama being on the down low. Sinclair is intelligent,
articulate and forthright. His credibility has risen and Obama’s
has plummeted. Any attempts to thwart his press conference
will receive the full measure of the law to protect his rights.

  • That birth certificate is false. It was NOT released by his campaign. It was released by Site creator Markos Moulitsas who said the campaign released it to him.

Well Markos is also the one that it was proven that he falsely created that video where supposedly Bill Clinton’s campaign Manager said some bad things about voters.

Nothing that man touches is anything I believe now. You people are just like everyone else you’re belittling, believing everything you see or hear.

Obama and his campaign has been consistently pulling that old “If you say it enough, people will believe it.” They also send that through the media outlets. (Good example: Remember when it was said Hillary quit on that last primary Tuesday before the polls in South Dakota opened? It started on Daily Kos and AP and went through the media like wildfire. She didn’t quit, Obama and his camp
was trying to suppress the vote.)

Markos is a well-known bad mouther against the Clintons.

  • La, la, la, Republican trolls out from under the bridge have come in for a visit.

  • About …LARRY SINCLAIR…If you look at the day schedule in the

    ….DEL.

  • Mr. Sinclair has every right for his voice to be heard. He has been trying to get the truth out for months but MSM has thwarted his efforts. Nothing you brainwashed Obamazombies or the cesspool can do but get your popcorn ready, pull up a pillow and a box of kleenex.

  • I’m afraid the right-wing extremists and Hillary kool-aid drinkers are not going to give up. They’ll stop at nothing. Remember the State Dept. worker who got into trouble for accessing Obama’s and McCain’s passport files? That person was probably working for Hillary or the right wing. When you apply for a passport, you have to show the State Dept. your birth certificate, which is probably why that State Dept. jerk was peeking at those files. If Obama’s opponents will do that, who knows what other documents they’ll access illegally.

  • Do you suppose that the way they are fighting all this, there maybe some proof in what Larry is saying?

Also, I am a woman and I am NOT voting for Obama, in fact our group has decided to vote for McCain. We want a true American in office, not a wanna be one

I do not use drugs or drink. so I am not ignorant. I know a good person when I see one. Why do you think I am backing Larry

Any names you want to call him, just goes back on barack as he is also gay but he still uses crack cocaine. Larry has already grew out of that stage in his life.

Have fun next Wednseday I hope you will all be watching the news

  • I don’t get all the people up in arms? What’s the big deal, Larry Sinclair has something to say at the National Press Club, if you doubt him then by all means show up and ask questions. I don’t see anybody complaining about Obama using his free speech rights daily, come on people get a life.

  • Someone should check the birth announcements in the newspaper archives for 1961 in Hawaii.

  • Dear Larry Sinclair believers,

You don’t seem to realize that to everyone else you’re a half-naked man standing on a city corner screaming about the coming end of the world. The crowd just walks by, trying to pretend that he’s not there, collectively hoping that he can get the mental health treatment he so desperately needs and deserves.

    Get some help, folks. Seriously.

  • Sinclair is seeking two things– attention and money. He’s nothing more than a con man with a record to prove that he’s not even very good at what he does. Anyone who believes otherwise is a gullible idiot.

  • Well Markos is also the one that it was proven that he falsely created that video where supposedly Bill Clinton’s campaign Manager said some bad things about voters.

    Umm… what?

Perhaps I need one of those websites to debunk bullshit smears against me as well.

  • Look, at some point the world of reality must be acknowledged. Despite 4 months of the media pounding a message 24 hours a day that Obama had the nomination sewed up, he only could win 5 of the final 14 primaries and couldn’t even muster 46% of those votes. And despite huge media attention of his “win” on May 31 and Hillary throwing her full support behind him, Obama only got a 3% bump in the polls. In the world of reality this is not good news for Sen. Obama.

So those of you buying into the hype that Sen. Obama is the most popular, loved, welcomed change since JFK – you need to wake up and look at the numbers – they don’t support what you think. That’s not opinion or spin, it’s just fact.

The same applies to Larry Sinclair. Again, you have not done your homework and you are refusing to look at reality. For your own love of country you should take a look at why a Presidential candidate would allow his supporters to try strong arming the free press into prohibiting a solitary citizen from his right to free speech. That’s pretty dangerous. Just stop and think how dangerous that is.

Therefore I urge you to listen to Larry Sinclair’s press conference as an American, not as a supporter of a candidate. If Mr. Sinclair’s story is proven true, which is what I believe will happen, or even if it is not – just be thankful you live in a nation that affords every single person the right to free speech so the truth can be determined.

  • For your own love of country you should take a look at why a Presidential candidate would allow his supporters to try strong arming the free press into prohibiting a solitary citizen from his right to free speech. That’s pretty dangerous. Just stop and think how dangerous that is.

You don’t have a real firm grasp of what freedom of speech actually means, do you? No one is treatening Sinclair’s right to speak– although you are questioning our right to tell the National Press Club that they’re hosting a huckster and that we should have permission from Obama to do so.(?)

Larry Sinclair is a walking, talking smear campaign against Obama. Why don’t I believe him? Occam’s razor. You KNOW if there was a shred of evidence that ANY of his allegations were true they would be printed in the Washington Post not the lies-and-rumors-rag known as The Globe. He can make all the allegations he wants but he has NO PROOF. Although if Obama were some other kind of celebrity– actor, etc.– he might have sued Sinclair and The Globe for libel by now.

Sinclair has been running around spreading this nonsense for a while now. No one is stopping him from speaking– we’re just exercising our own free speech rights and saying that he’s full of shit.

  • Man o Man, I hope Larry Sinclair is for real. Obama is not qualified, but people flock to him like the second coming. I hate our country’s past, but I won’t vote for an unqualified candidate just to make myself feel good. I feel fine.

  • Man o Man, I hope Larry Sinclair is for real. Obama is not qualified, but people flock to him like the second coming. I hate our country’s past, but I won’t vote for an unqualified candidate just to make myself feel good. I feel fine.

This is almost a perfect example of how screwed up Obamaphobes are. They can’t fight him on the issues so they pray for some apocalyptic scandal to bring him down. Ask an Obamaphobe why they hate Obama so much and they cannot give you any policy answer. It’s all “gay, negro, crackhead, muslim murderer” stuff all of which is false.

Idiocracy may very well be a prophetic movie

  • Hey Obamabots, if you are so certain that Sinclair is a liar and a homophobe, then let him hang himself, don’t censor ! If you censor then you’ll look like you’re trying to cover something up …. hmmmmm, maybe you ARE ! Which ones of you have made the death threats against Sinclair ? He’d better start wearing a ‘bot-proof vest, you guys are a scary bunch.

  • Btw, Obama’s anti-smear web site shows the same bogus “certification of live birth” (which they incorrectly declare is Obama’s “birth certificate”, the dummies don’t even know the difference) that Kos posted on his web site. Total fakery, just blow it up and have a laugh.

The packaging and marketing of Obama is downright scary. I see we’re in for a change alright, a change to an even more slick and self-serving regime than we’ve had with Bush. Count me out on this one.

  • i won’t believe it’s obama’s real birth certificate until obama hand delivers a notarized copy to my white republican ass.

by the way, i’m tough on crime. if sinclair is admitting to smoking crack, can we put him in jail?

  • So has anyone heard of this website StopInfanticide.Org.

Below is what I found on the site.

Do you know that Infanticide is worst than abortion?

Infanticide is the killing of babies who survived abortion.

Do you know that the charming and eloquent speaker, Senator Barack Obama is the only presidential candidate who support killing of babies who survived abortion?

Do you know that Senators Clinton, Kennedy and Kerry agreed a mother’s right to “choose” stopped at her baby’s delivery?

    I also found this

  • “Progressive all the way said:

Yeah! And it’s little known that Obama has drafted legislation to ban rainbows and unicorns! And he’s BLACK!

Who could vote for someone with such a despicable background!

Does this smear exist because John McCain wasn’t born in an American state?

It is often said that one should attack from the perspective of one’s own weakness.

That said, there are some REALLY stupid people out there.

Man o Man, I hope Larry Sinclair is for real. Obama is not qualified, but people flock to him like the second coming. I hate our country’s past, but I won’t vote for an unqualified candidate just to make myself feel good. I feel fine.

Still being a child because Obama was correct about Iraq and your were a frightened pussy?

Someone should check the birth announcements in the newspaper archives for 1961 in Hawaii.

someone should look for McCain’s birth announcement in ANY American state.

(hint: you won’t find one. He wasn’t born in America)

  • I just wanted to point out that http://www.liberalviewer.com seems to have an excellent handle on how to counter disinformation. He is doing some quite really effective things on youtube. Check out his channel there. He does a great job against quite a few attacks against Obama that F-word news made against Obama. So that’s one way.

And the way to counter a smear is NOT to say, “I am NOT a wife-beater, I have NEVER beaten my wife, etc.” Because then it just gets reported as “Today, Joe Blow looked like he was sweating, as he once again denied the allegations against him, but despite that…”

I don’t think Obama needs our advice. He’s already shown himself to be quite a bit smarter than previous candidates.

  • Don’t you people believe in free speech? Or is that only when you are trashing Clinton or Mccain.

  • First of all– Kos is commenting here? Wow, Steve, you’re in the big leagues now!

Secondly– Sinclair is the John O’Neill of 2008. Remember that character? Nixon dug him up to smear Kerry in 1971, then ONeill reappeared again in 2004 as part o’ the Swiftboaters.

Finally, the suggestion of shouting down bloviating talking head pundits before they can repeate unsubstantiated rumors, is beautiful. I doubt any public officeholder would do it though.

  • Senator Obama is NOT a Dirty Muslim!

“What you won’t hear from this campaign or this party is the kind of politics that uses religion as a wedge,” says Mr. Obama, while denouncing statements of him being a Muslim as a smear. Why is the presidential candidate who claims to be religiously inclusive is treating the word “Muslim” as an insult? Apparently, it is OK for Mr. Obama to be associated with terrorists like William Ayers or racists like Jeremiah Wright, but God forbid somebody would call him a Muslim! No, he won’t stand for that kind of smear! We admit that most terrorists are Muslims, but most Muslims are not terrorists and the statement on Mr. Obama’s website is insulting to hundreds of millions of people.

How could a man who discards his family heritage in favor of political expediency be even considered for presidency of the United States? Where are all the so-called “Islamic civil rights groups” like CAIR, MPAC, ISNA, MAS, etc. who are quick to defend every Islamic terrorist, but are silent when Muslims in general are being denigrated? Would Mr. Obama have the same reaction if someone claimed that he was raised as a Jew? We sincerely doubt that.

Muslims Against Sharia demand immediate removal of “SMEAR: Barack Obama is a Muslim” statement from the official Barack Obama’s website as well as an apology for giving the word “Muslim” a negative connotation.

    http://muslimsagainstsharia.blogspot.com/2008/06/senator-obama-is-not-dirty-muslim.html

  • I don’t pay much attention to those stupid flutterings. What I’d like to know is why Obama voted against the Illinois Induced Infant Liability Act. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a good reason–this wouldn’t be the first time a “let’s protect babies” law turned out to be an anti-abortion law in disguise–but I would like to know what it was.
