It’s not just a river in Egypt

Given his comments yesterday on the [tag]president[/tag]’s national support, I think [tag]Karl Rove[/tag] has climbed into [tag]Bush[/tag]’s bubble.

Despite low approval ratings, “I’m sanguine,” [tag]Rove[/tag] said. “I know our own polls.”

He said that Bush’s likeability, his [tag]personal[/tag] [tag]approval ratings[/tag], were in the 60s in some polls. “Job approval is lower. And what that says to me is that people like him, they respect him, he’s somebody they feel a connection with, but they’re just sour right now on the war. And that’s the way it’s going to be.”

This is utter nonsense. Rove can’t point to a single report anywhere that supports any of these conclusions. In fact, all available evidence suggests the polar opposite.

The most recent polls show the president’s personal approval ratings slipping below 30%, less than half of where Rove claims they are. Indeed, most recent data shows that Americans don’t like Bush at all — his job-performance ratings are actually higher than his personal ratings.

As MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, of all people, said in March, “The people don’t like the President even more than they don’t like his policies.”

People “like him”? They “feel a connection with” him? I don’t think so.

“I know our own polls” probably means he passes out pieces of paper around the WH that say:

Do you like the president?
Check Yes
Check No
Check Maybe

  • I think he meant “Journalists like him. They feel a connection with him.”

    I’d have to agree.

  • It is very simple.

Only conservative Republicanites count as ‘people’ to Karl Rove, so he is happy to have 60% of them ‘liking’ the President.

What you and I think matters not a whit.

  • It’s exactly like Lance has described. To karl, you’re either “with us or against us”. If you’re against us you are the enemy, and your opinion doesn’t count.

    Voila! 60% “like” the preznit.

  • I still remember the Election Night 2000 interview with Geo Bush Sr after Florida had been called for Gore and he wasn’t worried at all because he claimed that they knew their own polls and knew things that the networks didn’t. So I don’t discount at all when someone like Rove says something like this. Never under-estimate these guys.

  • I agree with Andy (#6): never misunderestimate the Bush Crime Family. So far they’ve put the rest of the Mafia to shame, on all counts that matter to them.

  • I’m sure the latest poll by Diebold had things going their way. Karl is just scared his indictment is coming this week.

  • It’s just another symbiance between the Amerikan Fourth Reich and its German predecessor (the Third). “We’re winning the war” was a fairly popular information-ministry statement, even at the beginning of May 1945. Karl Rove hasn’t a clue; he’s still imagining himself to be a contemporary Josef Goebbels, addressing the Amerikan version of the Hoerst Wessel brigades. Sorry, Karl, but your 1935 has come and gone. It’s now a replay of 1945, and your precious little Reich is crumbling into the dust….

  • I’ve often wondered how they keep Dear Leader from publically falling apart psychologically with the wreck he’s making of the country and citizens finally catching on. In addition to screening out all negative reports, it’s aparent that Rove whispers Iago like in Chimpy’s ear–“Don’t worry, we have the real polls and you’re still the guy everyone wants to have a beer with. They are just upset that the war isn’t going well right now.” Bush the child believes this and carries on, with frequent naps and vacations. “All’s right with the world and they love me personally”, he repeats to himself, over and over, as he snuggles his pillow or pedals for miles. Indispensible Karl knows how to keep that relentless ball steamrolling on, one day at a time.

  • “I’m sanguine,” Rove said. “I know our own polls.”

Are these polls taken inside or outside the building he works in.
