‘It’s Subpoena Time’

There’s been a bit of a lull in getting testimony from White House officials — most notably, Karl Rove — on the prosecutor purge scandal. Today, the NYT suggests it’s time to stop waiting and start subpoenaing.

Congress has now heard from everyone in the Justice Department who appears to have played a significant role in the firings of the prosecutors. They have all insisted that the actual decisions about whom to fire came from somewhere else. It is increasingly clear that the somewhere else was the White House. If Congress is going to get to the bottom of the scandal, it has to get the testimony of Mr. Rove, his aides Scott Jennings and Sara Taylor, Ms. Miers and her deputy, William Kelley.

The White House has offered to make them available only if they do not take an oath and there is no transcript. Those conditions are a formula for condoning perjury, and they are unacceptable. As for documents, the White House has released piles of useless e-mail messages. But it has reported that key e-mails to and from Mr. Rove were inexplicably destroyed. At the same time, it has argued that e-mails of Mr. Rove’s that were kept on a Republican Party computer system, which may contain critical information, should not be released.

This noncooperation has gone on long enough. Mr. Leahy should deliver the subpoenas for the five White House officials and make clear that if the administration resists, Congress will use all available means to get the information it needs.

I don’t have anything special to add to the subject; I just wanted to endorse this sentiment heartily.

The investigation has collected evidence, heard from witnesses, and compiled documents. There are a variety of unanswered questions, all of which seem to involve the White House generally, and Rove specifically. The Senate Judiciary Committee, on a bipartisan vote, already cleared the way for subpoenas. In the interests of justice (and Justice), it’s time to send them to the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue.

Yes. What is the administration hiding? What is it so afraid of?

Time to end the non-cooperation.

And, oh, by the way, has anyone noticed that there’s been a surge in lawyers in the White House? All Ivy Leaguers, and not Regent University types?

  • If all roads lead to Rove, then by all means, it is time to go to Rove. Mr Leahy—release the barbarians, and let the sacking of Bu$hylvania begin!

  • Nothing to see here. Please focus all attention on Paril

(Won’t Someone Please Think of the Children?)
Sung to the tune How much is that Doggie in the Window?

How long till they subpoena Karl?
The one with the long paper tail.
How long till they subpoena Karl?
I do hope the Dem’s just don’t quail.

I must take a trip to the White House,
And leave ole sad Paris alone.
If he has answers, he’ll be forced to tell,
Or that ole Rove will have a jail cell.

How long till they subpoena Karl?
The one with the long paper tail.
How long till they subpoena Karl?
I do hope the Dem’s just don’t quail.

I don’t want that ‘Berto or Monica,
    I don’t want a lawyer that balks.
I don’t want lame answers that confuses,
‘Cause you can’t let that them off with a walk.

How long till they subpoena Karl?

  • I think the Dems also need to call back some of the witnesses and threaten them with jail time if their memory doesn’t improve.

I sure wish they would get a little more serious, we already know laws have been broken by the people in the frigging “Justice Department”, and the constitution has suffered greatly as a result. It’s time to put some people in JAIL.

  • The Dems also need to call Cheney, or at least Addington, the newest docu dump showed OVP hands all over the purge as much as Rove’s. TPMuckraker has the docs, and the comments thread has the implications. Also that dump proved Goodling lied under oath, even with her immunity she said something to the affect of “give me and Griffin the power, but do it through other means of communications.” Which says to me , the Dems have NO EXCUSE not to go after Coptix and the other server groups in Knoxville immediately, before anything else can be destroyed. And by golly, if things have been destroyed say post 1/07, then we’ve got the RNC and a whole bunch of other folks for obstruction of justice and destroying evidence, etc. And will someone please tell me when the heck RICO kicks in?? Paging Patrick Fitzgerald….

  • Is it the WH-7 now. This is the showdown as Fred Fielding has already stated the conditions for “testifying” before the committee is not negotiable. The WH members will ignore the subpoenas or claim WH privilege or that it would interfere with an ongoing investigation originating out of the WH. They will block, stall, impede and just “gum it to death” till they are out of office. They have already stated that this is what they intend to do.
Meanwhile, Leahy and Conyers will go through all the motions, complain and be shocked by the WH’s position. All to no avail for bringing accountability to the WH or the DoJ.
The constitution makes it clear what must be done to confront a situation of a corrupt WH refusing to abide by the rule of law.

Impeachment. It’s what must be done. The corruption is so overwhelming that once investigated and brought out into the open the votes will come to indict. If the congress does not impeach this president and vice president then there will never be a time when any president would be impeached.

The support is there and with the appointment of a special prosecutor, the support will become overwhelming.

It is the constitutional duty of this congress to impeach. The rest of the country is waiting to stand behind you.

  • If Paris can feel the hand of justice, so can Karl.

Nice to see the NYT has some cojones again. The Washington Post? Not so much.

  • REALLY NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know as well as we’re all reading these comments that :

ALL POLITICIANS AND PREACHERS ARE CUT FROM THE SAME CLOTH. What makes you think the DEMOCRATS have any intention of doing anything other than beat their breat(s)?
