Kerry to GOP: Careful what you wish for

Over the last several days, the Bush campaign and the RNC made John Kerry’s military records out to be an incredibly important set of documents, crucial to the coming election. Any hesitation or hint of reluctance on the part of the Kerry campaign about this was effectively waving a red flag in front of an angry bull.

But the funny thing about that, though, is the bull usually misses.

The Republicans wanted Kerry’s military records released, so Kerry released them. It’s a good thing Ken Mehlman and Co. made such a big deal about it, because all the positive attention the records are receiving only reinforces Kerry’s image as a decorated war hero.

Either this was incredible luck on the Kerry campaign’s part or the result of a well-executed plan. Nick Confessore said, “Looks like John Kerry may have been playing rope-a-dope with the Bush campaign.” Planned or not, the result is the same: Kerry is getting some very positive press about records that make him look very good.

The records depict many instances of bravery in the face of enemy fire and describe a young officer who is smart, articulate and decisive. For example, George M. Elliot, his commander in early 1969, wrote, “In a combat environment often requiring independent, decisive action, Lt. j.g. Kerry was unsurpassed.”

Mr. Elliot added, “His bearing and appearance are above reproach.”

The AP report added:

During his four years of active duty, Kerry received glowing evaluations that cited his maturity, intelligence and immaculate appearance. He was recommended for early promotion, and when he left the Navy in 1970 to run for Congress, his commanding officer said it was the Navy’s loss.

[…]

“Intelligent, mature and rich in educational background and experience, Ens Kerry is one of the finest young officers I have ever met and without question one of the most promising,” wrote Capt. Allen Slifer, Kerry’s supervisor aboard the USS Gridley, where he served his first tour in Vietnam but was far removed from combat as an electrical officer.

The DNC research department has prepared a very helpful side-by-side comparison of Kerry’s record of heroic military service in Vietnam and George W. Bush’s tour with the National Guard (.pdf doc).

Remember, Republicans, you asked for this.
