Latest GOP affirmative action plan: Racism for all

Guest Post by Morbo

Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue has signed into law what is believed to be the most punitive anti-illegal immigration law in the country.

Rallies, both pro and con, were held at the state capitol just before Perdue inked the bill. The Associated Press reported that at one of them, state Rep. Melvin Everson, one of the Georgia House’s two black Republicans, called illegal immigration “a cancer” and went on to say, “The last time I checked, America was the land of English — not Spanish.”

You really have to stand in awe of the Republican Party. What other body would have the vision, daring and ability to give a black man the opportunity to rise to the dizzying heights of a xenophobic, racist ignoramus?

It puts a lump in my throat. God bless America.

I thought it was the land of the free and home of the brave

  • You have to hand it to the Rethugs, and the blacks who take up their “I got mine; fuck you for wanting yours, too” mentality. After all, once upon a time the black man was the slave who was forced to come to America against his will; why should we now allow others to CHOOSE to come here because they burn with Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “dream” of a better life of equality and opportunity? It makes me ashamed that they carry the same label of “American” as I do, despite how they desecrate and seek to destroy everything that this once-great country stood for in the world.

Two of my children now live and work in Atlanta (having had to seek their livelihoods away from the rust and snow of Michigan), one as an attorney with a 100+ law firm and the other as a technician in a soil and water testing lab. It simply breaks my heart that these two extremely intelligent, (truly) compassionate, humane and progressive democrats have to slog their way through such a backward and stupid culture, body politic, and antiquated redneck society.

As if that isn’t bad enough, my other child is a Marine Lieutenant being trained at Miramar Naval Air Station as a Naval Flight Officer to fly in the rear seat of an F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet. He’ll soon be done with that training, and I expect/fear that he will then be deployed to Iraq (you know, fresh meat and all). My son will carry out his duty as assigned, and I am damned proud of him — as I am of my other two children — but I sure hate what these Lying. Fucking. Murderous. Dangerous. Bastards ask of our military, and how badly the individual soldiers, marines, sailors and other servicemembers are treated while on active duty and especially after they return to civilian life.

So, Sonny Purdue and all of the rest of you racist rednecks who forgot what America truly stands for, here the most appropriate, thoughtful, quiet, and heartfelt comment I can make to you:

—–FUCK YOU ALL TO HELL FOR ALL ETERNITY, PLUS ONE DAY JUST FOR SPITE—–

  • Oddly, the context of his remarks wasn’t included by the AP. Perhaps they were hoping for the sort of response that this post provides.

Does this site support the working conditions at IFCO Systems?

The only way to prevent such abuses is to stop illegal immigration. If you oppose enforcing our laws against illegal immigration, then you automatically support such abuses.

  • TLB,

I admit that I don’t know the handle of each person who comments here, but I have been a “TCR regular” for well over a year. In that time, I don’t recall seeing any comments by you before. If that is the case, maybe you just wandered onto this site for the first time, and your idiocy can be overlooked as ignorance and naivete. If, on the other hand, you are not new here, then you sure as heck have not been following the very detailed discussion this topic has received for a long time (long before the debacle of a bill that Tex Sensenbrenner and his Rethugs rammed through the House). Either that or you just like to annoy people without adding anything of substance or salience.

TLB said, “The only way to prevent such abuses is to stop illegal immigration. If you oppose enforcing our laws against illegal immigration, then you automatically support such abuses.” Sounds straight out of the Rethug talking points, or even from Tancredo himself.

Speaking strictly for myself, TLB, take your nonsense elsewhere if you want to parrot the GOP talking points. You will not find the “divide and conquer” BS having any effect here (other than getting yourself flamed).

  • The ONLY way to stop illegal immigration is by punishing THOSE WHO HIRE illegal immigrants. Mexicans aren’t dumb; they know a relatively better deal when the see it. Throughout our history, back into Colonial times, when the jobs weren’t available our “illegal alien” ancestors just didn’t come; in fact, for the many periods there was actually net OUT-migration. IN-migration is, and has always been, extraordinarily sensitive to labor market fluctuations.

All other “control” measures – police, border patrols, fences, dogs, etc. – never affect the amount of in-migration, just the danger of it (migrants come across at less-safe places) and the difficulties of return-migration (why fight such obstacles just to get back home?).

Of course, all this is logic and observation. It doesn’t slake the hatred of the slobbering knuckle-draggers, so it will never classify as “policy” with the Bush Crime Family.

Analytical Liberal – here’s to you and your children. They’re fighting a hard fight, but who knows … maybe enough retrograde Americans will age and finally die off so that this can become the country its Founding Fathers intended it to be.

  • I think that a sanction against illegal employers is probably the only thing that will work. How about a hundred dollars per day, per emploee? I think that would make a citizen out of a lot of these cheap jerks. All of their profits from the workman’s comp and the taxes they didn’t pay down the drain. I like it. Maybe it should be $200.00? Maybe they need their names in the paper and perhaps some criminal charges for repeat offenses? I think the problem might right itself if there were some serious sanctions.

  • The day after a huge, and wonderfully upbeat, demonstration for treating immigrants with dignity I e-mailed a latino pastor I know. I said to him that what was missing was anyone asking this simple question: Why aren’t all these people working at good jobs in Mexico?

His response was immediate – that’s the key!

NAFTA promised an increase in employment in Mexico. In the 12 years since 19 Million Mexicans have fallen below subsistence level – that’s poverty.

My pastor friend wants to preach Revelations – the biblical passages that the LeHaye’s have turned into the basis (with help from some 19th century preachers) into the ‘Left Behind’ series. Revelations was an allegory for the horrors of empire, Nero in particular. The prophets were not able to directly state what they believed about empire, so they penned these passages.

Time to turn the tables on the LeHaye’s and teach the underlying stories of the Bible. Who knows, there might be more than a few who’d find some wisdom there. Martin Luther King Jr. did. Perhaps we can revive that tradition, especially for people who take comfort and strength in religion.

    Bring on the sermon!

  • It is true that if there were more oppertunity in Mexico, far fewer people would seek to immigrate. I also believed once that NAFTA would solve the problem, but sadly no. I wish I knew the answer but it is very complicated. Mexico’s problems are our problems. Too bad we can’t take the money we spent destroying and plundering Iraq, and spend it helping our neighbors develop a good sustainable economy with decent wages and a clean environment. I think that would have been a lot cheaper and we would have gotten some real results.

  • As Ed Stephen points out, the only real way to reduce illegal immigration, as well as induce some of the current crop of 11-12 million illegals here now, is employer sanctions.

But right now, it is the policy of our labor investigators to inform a company a day before hand of an investigation. Could you imagine the DEA informing a drug dealer a day before that there will be a drug search?

The House bill proposed putting up 700 miles of fence along a 2000 mile border. The border crossers are cutting through the fence we have now! How is adding to it going to stop the supply for the labor demand?

Besides, as long as we don’t have the INS agents to track down those who overstay their work, tourist and student visas, the border is hardly the biggest security issue. The 9/11 highjackers overstayed their visas. They didn’t cross the Arizona desert.

The laws against employers exist NOW. Let’s see the Bush administration enforce them against the likes of Walmart.

  • >It simply breaks my heart that these two extremely intelligent, (truly) compassionate, humane and progressive democrats have to slog their way through such a backward and stupid culture, body politic, and antiquated redneck society.

Wow. Fuck you. Oh I feel so sorry for you rust belt midwesterners, we Southerners haven’t suffered like you have. Losing your jobs is almost as bad as how not that long ago we had the child mortality rate of Africa. There are many places in the South where the average person makes less than the average Mexican. If you don’t like our stupid redneck culture (like the midwest is so progressive) I have something to say to you. WE DON’T WANT YOU HERE. The rest of the country has so long stood idly by while we (blacks and whites both) have lived in poverty. We still have less than you. If you’re going to come down here, don’t be like that. Atlanta actually has the wealthiest black population in America, and I’m tired of having to sit by and put up with people calling us stupid. You know who else has a stupid backwards culture? MEXICANS. At least by the same standards that ours is. But it’s not ok when I say that about Mexicans is it?
