Laughing at him, not with him

We all had a good laugh at the latest addition to the lengthy “Bushism” file yesterday.

“[T]his notion that the United States is getting ready to attack Iran is simply ridiculous. And having said that, all options are on the table.” — Bush, yesterday, at the European Union’s headquarters

The very idea of an attack is ridiculous, except for the fact that we’re keeping it mind. Bush at his unintentionally-funny best.

On the other hand, the LA Times report on Bush’s appearance in Belgium noted that the president “elicited laughter” with the comment, an observation borne out by the official White House transcript.

In other words, Bush is in Europe trying to strengthen ties he frayed during his first term, and in the process of trying to impress our allies, he’s saying things so dumb that people are literally laughing out loud at him.

Diplomacy has never really been the president’s strong point.
