Let the ‘pink purge’ begin

Guest Post by Morbo

Some Religious Right activists are so intolerant of gays that they are advocating purging them from the party’s leadership and government posts.

I agree wholeheartedly. In fact, why stop there? There should be no gays in the rank-and-file GOP either. Let’s face it, gay people have no business being in the Republican Party. It simply makes no sense. The GOP, firmly in the grip of the Religious Right, talks about a big tent, but lately all they’ve offered is a carnival sideshow of freaks led by religious extremists.

The kook right got all upset recently when Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice swore in Mark R. Dybul as U.S. global AIDS coordinator because (gasp!) Dybul’s male partner, Jason Claire, was standing right there. Then, Rice actually referred to Claire’s mother as Dybul’s “mother-in-law.”

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council nearly had a heart attack. As the Los Angeles Times reported, Tom McClusky, an FRC spokesman, put it right out there: “The big-tent strategy could ultimately spell doom for the Republican Party. All a big-tent strategy seems to be doing is attracting a bunch of clowns.”

You hear that, gay folks? The Religious Right thinks you are a bunch of clowns. And who do you think has more influence at the White House and among the congressional leadership — a handful of you guys or millions of evangelicals?

Which party engineered the drive for amendments banning same-sex marriage in the states and then used them to spur evangelical turnout in 2004? Which party sits on its hands while leaders of the Religious Right routinely spew the most outrageous bile toward gays? Which party sent the White House press secretary to address gay-bashing bigots at a “Values Voter Summit”? Which party welcomes people like Ann Coulter and Michael Savage? Which party advocates a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage and often backs state laws that would end even modest domestic partnerships laws?

Gays need the GOP they way a chicken needs Col. Sanders.

So please, please, let’s hope people like Perkins, James Dobson, Lou Sheldon and others keep talking. Let them plot their pink purge. Let the witch hunt begin! I’d like to see the Republicans get really serious about this. Let me tell you how hardcore I am: Any potential member of the Republican Party should have to prove that he or she is straight before being permitted to join.

The Democrats have a role to play in the purge as well. They should be standing by with open arms to welcome every gay person who is driven out of the GOP. The Democrats should have plenty of change of party registration forms on hand for them.

Like any other special interest group, gay voters have energy, enthusiasm and money to bring to the table. It sounds like a good deal to me: The Democrats get gay voters and all of the good stuff they bring. The Republicans get Jerry Falwell and an extra shipment of Bibles.

LOL I like your modest proposal, Morbo. I even have a slogan. You don’t have to hate yourself to be a Democrat.

When I think pink, it’s not other men that I picture, so the expression Pink Purge says a lot about Republicans. And regarding that witch hunt, is it a gay witch hunt?

  • In the Florida Governor’s race, the Independent candidate thought it would be a good idea to point out that Charlie Crist, the Republican replacement for Jeb, is gay. I suppose he thought that many Republicans wouldn’t want to vote for a gay Governor.

  • Nice start. Two suggestions to make this really effective: Exhibit A is Sen. Sam “Fuckwit” Brownback who got his testes in a knot because a Bush appointed judge has gay friends. (Shock horror!) He is blocking the judge’s nomination to Fed. Court until he is certain her attendance at their commitment ceremony wasn’t illegal. So according to Brownback, any one with gay friends should be out on their ear as well.

And what about people with gay relatives? Sure, you can’t pick your relatives, but there could be some sort of public Rejection Ritual and people who refused to perform it would get the jackboot to the jacksie. Unless the person is a parent of the gay person because surely they are some how responsible for the little tyke going so a-stray. So at least parents of gays and lesbians should be out without a chance to appeal especially if they publicly support/approve of their child. There. That should make sure the ReThuglican Party is a no-go zone for both gay people and people who aren’t bigoted whack jobs. And we’d get rid of Dick “Dick” Cheney.

  • I can’t imagine why anyone who doesn’t top the list of meanest and/or richest would want to be Republican. Those who think the GOP stills stands for civil liberties are about fifty years behind the times.

  • And who do you think has more influence at the White House and among the congressional leadership — a handful of you guys or millions of evangelicals?

I’m not gay or Republican, but I’m going to guess “a handful of you guys”. Not that they have much influence, but everyone can see that the White House and congressional leadership don’t give a flying flip about gullible evangelicals.

  • This is one of those Pastor Martin Niemöller moments: “first they hated the gays, but since I wasn’t gay I didn’t care …” The thing about the far right of the Republican party is that if you give them a moment, they will think of a reason to hate you too.

  • In case anyone missed it this week, have you seen this news on the latest bigwig in the Republican party to be outed? It’s not a nice thing that Rogers has done in outing him, but Sen Craig has been on the anti-gay power grab for years, so I think it’s fair.

Great article also here in the WaPo about the turmoil and hypocrisy in the GOP about gays. It’s apparently all about “marketing”.

  • It’s true lots of Repubs have been publicly flaunting their homophobia, but what have the Dems been doing in response? Looks like a lot of standing around and trying to act nonchalant. “Senator Dem, are you in favor of allowing gay people to serve in the military?”
    “Umm, err, uh….”
“You haven’t supported the amendment to ban gay marriage; does that mean you’re in favor of allowing gay people to marry?”
“Sorry, I’ve gotta catch a plane.”

I agree that any sane gay person should avoid the GOP’s tent like a stray dog avoids the County “animal shelter.” But registration as a Democrat isn’t exactly like winning the lottery, either. We need to do better. Maybe start by taking some calcium supplements for our backbones.

  • “Tom McClusky, an FRC spokesman, put it right out there: ‘The big-tent strategy could ultimately spell doom for the Republican Party. All a big-tent strategy seems to be doing is attracting a bunch of clowns’.”
    Like maybe you, Mr. McClusky?

  • my, my, my

    somethings, like color,

    never change.

for the right wing, decades ago it was “pinko commies”.

    is it now “pinko gays”?

(and by the way, is it male or female “gays”

that right-wing republicans like to focus hate on?

do right-wingers distinguish between the two?)

might “pinko ” breast cancer survivors next?

    of course not, you say.

(but then part of the hidden agenda of the republican right-wing, which, really,is the entire republican party today, is to SURREPTITIOUSLY, UNDER THE GUISE OF DISSEMBLING RHETORIC, roll-back the gains in equality and protection women have made in the last thirty years.)

for these folks, there always has to be somebody, someones, to hate.

    no hate, no energy.

    no energy, no collective activity

no collective activity, no money donated.

no money donated, no right-wing activity.

    hate is the key.

but at at any particular time,

    the target chosen is opportunistic.

  • As a lesbian, I boggle at the number of gay men who are Rethugs because of “economic” reasons. Lads, it’s like Jews for Hitler. Your money won’t protect you when they come for you.
