Lou Dobbs for president?

Last year, Michael Crowley and Marshall Wittmann, among others, suggested CNN’s resident bully Lou Dobbs could mount a credible presidential campaign.

Dobbs didn’t express any public interest, but as Wittmann argued, the immigration controversy has led to “a combustible political situation that could provide an opening for an outsider. It has the feel of 1992 when old Ross Perot emerged to shake up the Presidential race…. The Perotistas more or less continue to exist as Republican leaning independents. However, this constituency is likely very dissatisfied with the current situation.”

This week, the WSJ’s John Fund got the rumor mill started again.

Lou Dobbs for President? Don’t laugh. After months of telling reporters that he “absolutely” would not consider leaving his highly-rated CNN show in which he crusades against free trade and illegal immigration, Mr. Dobbs posted a commentary on his Web site last week predicting a surprise new presidential candidate in 2008. The mystery candidate is an “independent populist . . . who understands the genius of this country lies in the hearts and minds of its people and not in the prerogatives and power of its elites.”

Friends of Mr. Dobbs say he is seriously contemplating a race for the first time, although it’s still unlikely. They spin a scenario under which the acerbic commentator would parachute into the race if Michael Bloomberg, the New York billionaire and favorite of East Coast elites, enters the field as an independent. With Hillary Clinton continuing to score badly in polls in the categories of honesty and integrity, and with the public’s many doubts about Rudy Giuliani and other GOP contenders, Mr. Bloomberg may well see an opportunity to roil the political waters by entering the race late. If so, Mr. Dobbs then sees a niche for a “fourth-party” candidate who could paint the three other contenders as completely out of touch.

My friend Melissa McEwan, noting this bizarre scenario, added, “That’s the craziest sh*t I’ve ever heard.”

Agreed. I’d just add, however, that I really doubt Dobbs would even consider such a move.

For one thing, Dobbs is probably exaggerating his own notoriety. I suspect the vast majority of Americans don’t know who he is.

For another, I find it hard to imagine that Dobbs would accept a pay cut of this magnitude.

And most importantly, as Steve M. explained, this entire boomlet seems to have “publicity stunt” written all over it.

Remember when Stephen Colbert put out a book — and announced he was running for president a week later? It was a stunt, right, by a guy who makes fun of politics, meant (among other things) to get him publicity and sell some books? Well, it just so happens that Dobbs just put out a book, er, a week ago. As is so often the case in politics, life imitates satire.

Oh, the Dobbs book just so happens to be called Independents Day: Awakening the American Spirit. And, by astonishing coincidence, the fuel for speculation about his candidacy is a post on his Web site that says in part: “I believe the person elected a year from now will be an Independent populist, a man or woman who understands the genius of this country lies in the hearts and minds of its people and not in the prerogatives and power of its elites.”

That’s not a prediction — that’s an attempt to draw attention to his book. And so is the rumor about his candidacy.

I think that’s right. At a minimum, I hope that’s right.

Gee, what happened to Lazy Freddy? Ya now, the guy who was supposed to energize Repubs and Independents far and wide? Oh right, the dud whose most campaign platform is his wife’s fake boobs.

As for Lou? Good luck with that.

  • ONLY MORONS WOULD CHOSE SOMEONE LIKE LOU TO BE A PRESIDENT, WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DOSE HE HAVE ?

  • Lou is already running in the form of Tom Tancredo. Why field two single issue candidates in a presidential primary that have the same single issue?

I hope word of this sends Suzanne Malveaux running down the halls of CNN trying to find out whether Lou is a diamond or pearls kind of guy.

  • What kind of a guy gets on the tube night after night and rails about the same issues — for months and years on end? CNN could save a bunch by dropping Dobbs and airing his reruns. How would anyone know the difference?

  • I can’t stand Dobbs, but his being in the race would make it a lot more interesting. Too bad his xenophobia rules him out for me; on economic populism grounds he’s about a million times better than Our Lady of Perpetual Triangulation.

Then again, if Bloomberg’s in the race and the Dem is anyone but Obama, Dodd or maybe Edwards, it’s a pretty easy call for me anyway.

  • What a clusterfuck this election could be.

Let’s see: Clinton and Giuliani in the actual contest, with Paul, Dobbs, Bloomberg, and Nader off in the fringes.

Would be a bit like the 2003 California Governor’s recall– two major candidates along with a whole nuthouse full of flakes running too. It certainly would be more truly democratic to have 6 candidates instead of 2 to choose from, so I can’t argue with that. The practical problem is: the 2003 disaster already provides a model for who wins in those kinds of free-for-alls: whomever is the most howlingly brutal authoriarian and demagogue.

  • Lou would make a great president. He is tireless in his effort to get the word out on illegal immigration and anything that hurts middle class America. He is not afraid to make a stand and does not back down. We need a man in the white house who cares about Americans and not how to best fill the pockets of the globalist elites! RUN LOU RUN!!!!!

  • What a huge breath of fresh air should Lou Dobbs throw his hat in the ring. I would definitely vote for him. Not only is he the only MSM news anchor taking on illegal immigration (which he is totally correct on), he has taken on the economy, special interests, lobbyist influence peddling, government corruption, truth in government, religion in politics, free trade and favored trade status issues, national security, middle class erosion and American worker protection, our crumbling infrastructure, education, food safety and inspections, the environment, China’s dangerous imports and its influence on our national deficit, NAFTA, SPP, NAU, LOST, ridiculous government treaties, crime, drugs, racial issues and the list goes on.

Lou Dobbs has talked about, taken stances on, exposed and researched more issues than any other presidential candidate ever has or ever will.

  • Lou Dobbs knows the issues that concern Americans. He knows what impacts poor and middle class Americans. He exposes what the Government and big business are doing to line their pockets and destroy America. He knows the damage that illegal immigration has done to our great nation and the threat that continued illegal immigration is having as our government fails to enforce our laws and turns a blind eye. Lou would be a Presidential Candidate for Americans.

  • As of 2006, California contained greater than 25% of the total illegal alien population within the U.S. Many of these illegals concentrate in Los Angeles. New statistics from the Department of Public Social Services reveal that illegal aliens and their families in Los Angeles County collected over $37 million in welfare and food stamp allocations in November 2007 – up $3 million dollars from September. Twenty five percent of the all welfare and food stamps benefits are going directly to the children of illegal aliens. Illegals collected over $20 million in welfare assistance for November 2007 and over $16 million in monthly food stamp allocations for a projected annual cost of $444 million. “This new information shows an alarming increase in the devastating impact Illegal immigration continues to have on Los Angeles County taxpayers,” said Antonovich, LA County Supervisor. “With $220 million for public safety, $400 million for healthcare, and $444 million in welfare allocations, the total cost for illegal immigrants to County taxpayers far exceeds $1 billion a year – not including the millions of dollars for education.”

Just keep in mind that the $37 million a month is for only one county in one state and is only welfare and foodstamp benefits. It doesn’t include hospital care, education, fraud, wage depression, crime, depreciation of housing values, the portion of bad loans given to illegal aliens by banks, insurance costs and the myriad of other burdensome expenses that illegal aliens put on the backs of American citizens. There are 29 sanctuary cities in California and because of that there should be little wonder why so many illegal aliens stay in this state. They basically operate with impunity and even if they get arrested for a serious crime there is little chance of them being deported. They can sign up for welfare and food stamps with no questions asked and the hospitals provide them with free care as long as there are still emergency rooms that can’t turn them away for lack of funds. All things considered, California has rolled out the welcome mat for them.

Is there any wonder that California is right now in a fiscal crisis emergency with a budget deficit greater than $14 billion and growing? Reliable estimates calculate illegal aliens cost the state $10.5 billion each year! Why not cut all public services to those not in the U.S. legally? Just a simple thought on my part that would go a long way to putting California back on its feet. But, I digress…Lou Dobbs is the only news anchor who has been reporting and exposing this situation in the MSM.
