I’ve mentioned before that I set up a Hotmail address to receive e-mails from various kook right groups. These organizations always promise they won’t give your address to others, but of course they lie. One of them gave the address to the campaign of some nut named Bill Greene, who is running for Congress in Georgia. He regularly sends me urgent pleas for cash.
Greene, seeking the seat that opened up after Rep. Charles Norwood died, is running on an openly anti-immigrant platform and is not ashamed of his ties to the radical Minutemen group.
But sometimes bashing illegal aliens is not enough. In that case, thank God for Nancy Pelosi. The Greene campaign’s most recent message isn’t subtle: “Pelosi Democrats Trying To Steal Republican House Seat — Help Now!” it blares. It came with a photo of the speaker that is less than flattering.
I know candidate fund-raising messages can be hyperbolic, but this one struck me as a tad insane, even for a candidate who is clearly missing some of his frontal lobe. The Democrats are coalescing behind a candidate for this seat because, even though it is a conservative district, they’d like to have it. This means they are trying to steal the seat?
Oh, that Democrat Party! How low will they go?
The message goes on to point out that Democratic leaders are rallying around a candidate named James Marlow. Marlow worked for Yahoo and apparently has been using his own money to finance his campaign, which is not at all unusual (or illegal) these days. He is also a moderate Democrat whose views might appeal to conservative voters in the district.
Can you believe that? The Democrats found a candidate with money and whose views might attract the voters — and now they are backing his attempt to win office! How dare they?
It gets worse.
Evil bloggers are actually supporting Marlow’s effort! (Gasp.) These bloggers are writing good things about him, in the hope that people will support Marlow. Good God, will no one think of the children?
It appears to be a conspiracy. Greene’s message reads: “The district chair of the Democrat Party has put out an alert, letting the ‘faithful’ know that they’re starting a major voter registration drive in the most liberal areas, as well as a big drive to get volunteers for phone banks, etc. They are serious about sneaking in and taking away this seat from conservative Republicans — which means WE need to be serious about keeping it in conservative hands!”
So now those damn Democrats are registering voters and targeting those already registered. Plus, they actually plan to communicate with these folks and even urge them to vote on the day of the election? My god, have they no shame?
Just so Greene is clear on this, here is a definition of the word “steal” from an online dictionary: “To take without the owner’s consent.” The “Republic Party” does not own Norwood’s seat. Any other party has the right to try to get it.
There are examples of stolen elections in America. For example, losing the popular vote and then getting your brother, partisan election officials and the Supreme Court to halt a recount and summarily put your candidate in office — that would be stealing an election. But surely no political party would stoop that low, right?
