Maybe we could beg to make Pat a permanent guest

If Dems are really lucky, TV preacher Pat Robertson will be a mainstay on the Sunday-morning talk shows from now on. For all the left’s efforts to paint the Republicans and their base as radical extremists, there’s just no substitute for a leading right-wing voice going on national television to confirm everything we’ve been saying for years.

I’m referring of course, to Robertson’s appearance yesterday on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.” My friends at Crooks & Liars have posted the video, which I strongly recommend. Indeed, I’d also suggest the DNC send out copies of the interview to as many people as possible with a short note that reads, “See? This is what today’s Republican Party looks like.”

I won’t bother reprinting the entire transcript, but the highlights include:

* Robertson agreed with some his earlier statements that only Christians and Jews are qualified to serve in American government

* He suggested Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a communist because she worked for the ACLU

* Robertson insisted that federal judges who fail to share his worldview are a greater threat to the fabric of America than terrorism today, Nazis during WWII, and the Civil War

* He dismissed the significance of the 9/11 terrorists as “a few bearded-terrorists who fly into buildings”

Robertson didn’t even seem embarrassed by such lunacy; he was proud of his beliefs and presented them as if they were obvious truths. We can only hope he’ll be invited to make similar appearances on other networks every week.

One more thing: before you dismiss Robertson as a loony has-been whose opinions no longer matter, please note that he remains a powerful figure in GOP circles. For example, in 2003, just weeks before the war in Iraq started, Bush met with Robertson and discussed the invasion. Tune into Robertson’s “700 Club” program on any given day and you’ll see high-ranking Republican officials from Congress and the Bush administration chatting about today’s biggest issues.

Robertson may be stark raving mad, but his influence within his party is still strong, which makes yesterday’s televised lunacy all the more significant.

Yes, we can only hope that they are so arrogant that they show themselves without their “sheep’s clothing” more often!

Also, I was truly amazed at Sen. George Allen’s “I’ll-say-anything-to-toe-the-Party-line” performance on Meet the Press yesterday: (1) in 2000 he thought Al Gore’s “lock box” for social Security was a good idea, but now he says “the trust fund doesn’t exist”; (2) when Russert says Bush’s circuit court judge nominee approval percentage is virtually identical to those for Clinton, Allen says “I have my own statistics”; and (3) when asked if he supports the Social Security benefit cuts to middle class workers that will result if Bush’s Pozen-inspired proposal is adopted, Allen says “we’re just trying to protect middle income and upper income and low income workers.”

What a wanker! Almost as much as Andy Card saying “it’s all the Democrats’ fault for obstructing the President”. Sure, it has nothing to do with bad policy and enormously ignoring “the polls” [remember, Bush at his Thursday “Press Conference” said “I don’t care what the polls say”, the same polls that overwhelminly say the American people thought Bush screwed up by getting into Schiavo, that they want him to quit fucking with their Social Security, and that they want the Dems to keep obstructing the Repugs in the Congress! Yeah, those polls.

Nope, Bush just wants to shove his crap down our throats as if we were $20 whores who have to suck his c–k. Sorry, us real and average Americans don’t have to suck him, because the media is too busy doing that for us. What a sad, pathetic, tragic joke.

  • It’s not clear to me that extremist lunatics like Robertson *always* discredit themselves anymore. The mere fact that he’s allowed a platform on ABC bodes ill, methinks. The establishment is turning. Incidentally, ABC is fast becoming FOX-lite.

  • Yeah George!! I have a hard time believing that a large percentage of the US population can jump and cheer when they Bush or Robertson rant and rave. Why can’t they see it for what it is? Lunacy

  • It wouldn’t be a bad idea to start some serious looking at the next generation of wingnuts who will be taking over for aging icons like Robertson and Dobson. Somebody is going to be picking up the torch when they leave the scene, and it would be nice to get some ideas on who that will be.

  • Agreed on ABC becoming Fox-like. 2 Fridays ago, during prime time..we’re talking 8pm on a Friday night, they aired some Billy Graham thing complete w/ live big name country/Christian acts in between rants. Holy shnikeys.

Perhaps it was just another local pre-emption, though, I don’t know. I mean, the ABC station in Tulsa, OK doesn’t air Nightline immediately after the news…they air 2 – that’s right, back to freakin’ back – episodes of ‘Frasier’ re-runs BEFORE Nightline. Yep, it’s the 10pm news, then an hour of reruns from the last decade, then Nightline. Nice…

  • What can you say? This ball o’ slime used to be relegated to whacky Christian tv, and now on msm as if mainstream? He literally makes my skin crawl.

I used to post internet warnings @ 4 years ago about the “strange bedfellowship” of Robertson, and Israel, too. He’s one of those self-professed “Christian Zionists”, whatever the fudge that is. Watched the Mayor of Tel Aviv rave about his good buddy Pat, live from Tel Aviv.

And here I thought the acid had worn off by 1970.

What next, Bush making Ron Popeil his Social Security spokesman? “Just set your money in the private account, and forget it!”
