McCain’s Liberty weekend

John McCain’s much-discussed appearance at Jerry [tag]Falwell[/tag]’s [tag]Liberty[/tag] University is tomorrow morning. Chances are, more reporters will be on hand for this than any other [tag]commencement[/tag] in Liberty history. At a minimum, the political world will be watching to see the extent to which McCain is willing to sell out for a shot at the presidency.

Just as a refresher, let’s not forget that less than six years ago, [tag]McCain[/tag] (accurately) described Falwell as an “[tag]agent of intolerance[/tag]” who had a “corrupting influence” on politics in America. A day later, McCain said Falwell had an “evil influence” over the [tag]Republican[/tag] Party.

Now that he wants the religious right’s support in the 2008 primaries, McCain has radically changed course and reached out to clowns like Falwell, leading to tomorrow’s commencement address at Liberty. It’s an offensive move for McCain to lend Falwell credibility by appearing alongside him publicly, but the speech, in and of itself, is only part of the problem.

In fact, I’d argue that the uproar over the graduation address misses the forest for the trees. Every time McCain is asked about the appearance, which is frequently, he explains that he speaks to college audiences all the time, whether he agrees with the school’s policies and/or leadership or not. Fine.

But the discussion misses the point.

First, it’s not just the appearance, it’s what he says while he’s there. Ted Kennedy, of all people, appeared at Liberty 20 years ago and delivered a remarkable speech in defense of tolerance and respect for diversity. Will McCain have the courage to do the same? It’s unlikely.

In 2000, [tag]Bush[/tag] caused a controversy by appearing at [tag]Bob Jones[/tag] University. At the time, McCain said he does not mind “going any place where people have views that I find hateful” — but “when I go there, I’m going to tell them exactly what I think of them.” He added that he would have told the Bob Jones audience that “they ought to get out of the 16th century and into the 21st century.”

BJU is not exactly the same as Liberty, but hate is hate. McCain can tell Falwell and his followers “exactly what he thinks of them” tomorrow, but I have a hunch it will be a friendly message.

Second, it’s also worth remembering that Falwell is not only a nut, he’s an anti-American demagogue who has said, among other things, that the United States “deserved” the 9/11 attacks. Yes, McCain should have better judgment than to speak at Falwell’s school, but the far bigger outrage is when McCain told a national television audience that he no longer believes Falwell is an agent of intolerance.

McCain will probably deliver a pretty standard set of remarks tomorrow and the event will fade from memory, but McCain’s shameless transformation from centrist “maverick” to right-wing ideologue has more to do with months of careful positioning, and less to do with one silly speech at Liberty University.

Well, there will be enough photos taken to kill McCain’s chance of winning the general election. Can you see it now–McCain takes his marching orders from the radical right!

  • I think he’ll use it as his “Sister Souljah” moment.

Well, that would be impressive. I’m doubtful, but McCain can be unpredictable.

Does anyone else see this happening?

  • John McCain is a conservative. His problem is not with the conservatism of Liberty University, it is their problem with his good government anti-corruption credentials. John is not selling out to conservatives, certain types of conservatives are selling out to John. The same ones who sold out to Boy George II two and six years ago.

    Talk about fool me twice!

  • Just visible behind Jerry Falwell is the enormous Southern Baptist Convention, still the largest Protestant denomination in the US after the split between the moderates (most of whom left) and the fundamentalists who remain, in case anyone has forgotten. He is considered by them to be a “prominent member”.

Because Falwell’s name is so recognizable, people often forget his SBC nest — many many voters are in it. So I daresay McCain is holding hands with Falwell to reach all these voters. If he’d agreed to appear as the commencement speaker at one of the other SBC universities with a non-political big name at its head, it might even pass under the radar.

    =====

Totally unrelated to this topic, I heard on FoxNews this morning that Tony Snow plans to send letters of complaint to media organizations that are critical of Bush. Things must be getting desperate at the WH with Bush’s latest poll numbers, 29% at the WSJ today. Think this will stop the criticisms? Will Snow write complaint letters to polling organizations about the questions they ask?

    What’s next?

  • “I think every good Christian ought to kick Falwell right in the ass.” ~ Barry Goldwater

  • I agree with the Goldwater quote – thanks for reminding us, Jim B.

Maybe McCain’s appearance at Lincoln University – with the presence of all those TV cameras – could lead to the much ballyhooed beginning of Armageddon, but I’m not expecting any Sister Souljah moments from McCain. Not since the Regal Moron ripped him a new hole at the BJ University. The man’s a worthless sack of liquid crap, imho — and that’s coming a long way, for me, since the imprisoned hero McCain first entered the national political scene. It’s almost a clinical case of “straight talk” herosim turned eagerly into “I’ll go anywhere, kiss any ass” mush.

  • BJU is not exactly the same as Liberty…

They’re different all right; Liberty is much better funded.

  • Selling your soul to the religious right is selling your soul to the devil. One soul for a purported presidential election victory.

The Viet Cong may not have cracked McCain in their prison, but he’s cracking in his Republican prison. On NPR yesterday, a Focus on the Family spokesman shrugged off McCain by saying no matter what he’s say now, the uber-christians have long memories and will not forget. McCain’s not building a bridge, he’s really burning the last ones he has left.

Well, that would be impressive. I’m doubtful, but McCain can be unpredictable.

Sorry, but not for a split second. Fallwell and McCain are performing an unnatural act on each other for their own reasons of ambition and undeserved credibility. Weasel words will be the order of the day. If Brother McCain smacks down the Fallwellians or their worldview, he in turn will be smited with all the venom, holy terror and betrayed, outraged brimstone that can be mustered.

If he wants to convince the FOTF folks he’s serious, (for all the good it’ll do him), Johnny’s gonna have to swallow. And he’s gonna have to love it.

  • Of course, part of Clinton’s success when he tried the maneuver was that he was even more popular with the audience than the performer he criticized. McCain is less popular with the audience although they were and are both trying to communicate with a broader target audience.

  • The more I rubbed my two brain cells together and pondered this a little more, the more it became apparent to me that John and Jer have had their Sista’ Souljah moment. Jer was his Sista’ back in the day. McCain saw a fundy shittin’ in the woods and he said, “looky there, I see a fundy shittin’ in the woods” and folks gave him credit for that and allowed him to self describe as a “straight talker. Per Mr. CB… He “(accurately) described Falwell as an “agent of intolerance” who had a “corrupting influence” on politics in America. A day later, McCain said Falwell had an “evil influence” over the Republican Party.”

Clinton used Sista’ Souljah as his example of “corrupting influence” and it did work. McCain’s dissing Falwell gave Mr. Straight talker some credibility in the center at the time. But now, McCain is having to send flowers and shine the shoes of his Sista’ Falwell. And Sista’ Falwell is watching him close and he ain’t puttin’ up with any more of Johnny’s B.S. and backtalk.

  • still, wouldn’t it be cool if he said, “bite my shit.”?

    your pal,
    blake

  • IM A REGISTURED REP. AND A CHRISTIAN
