Meet Josh Bolten

To follow up on my earlier post on [tag]Andy Card[/tag]’s [tag]resignation[/tag], I think it’s also worth mentioning that his successor, former OMB Director [tag]Joshua Bolten[/tag], is getting a pretty big promotion despite not having much success on the job. The president said this morning:

“With me today is Joshua Bolten, who will be the new White House Chief of Staff. Josh is a man with broad experience, having worked on Capitol Hill and Wall Street and the White House staff, and for nearly three years as a Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Josh is a creative policy thinker. He’s an expert on the budget and our economy.”

I guess it depends on what one means by “expert.” As the president’s budget director, [tag]Josh Bolten[/tag] has helped add $2 trillion to the national debt in less than three years. He’s also helped oversee a dramatic rise in government spending and a series of irresponsible tax cuts for the wealthy that the country couldn’t afford.

Bolten has sold reckless tax cuts as fiscal responsibility, defended absurd budget tricks as sensible governing, argued falsely that tax cuts can pay for themselves, made demonstrably-false claims about the budget deficit, and embraced misleading scare tactics to promote privatization of Social Security. Bolten also made quite an impression with a memo last year arguing that the administration could ignore legal restrictions and spend as much as it pleases on fake news segments and pundit payola.

Only Bush would see Bolten as the kind of official in need of a promotion. Anyone hoping that today’s staff shake-up might represent a change in direction for the Bush White House is likely to be disappointed.

More smoke and mirrors with a new assistant for the bumbling magician.
A first rule of magic is not to repeat the tricks or the audience will catch on,
The crowd is starting to heckle, and bring out the ripe tomatoes, yet the show must go on. The illusions are wearing thin.

  • Will anyone really think this is “shaking up” the administration? Bolton already worked within spitting distance of the oval office and is totally emeshed into the pathology that is going on in the WH so how this is good for anyone other than Card, who is finally getting out, I do not know.

  • “Anyone hoping that today’s staff shake-up might represent a change in direction for the Bush White House….”

Naahhh. Steady as she goes. That’s not mist from the giant waterfall up ahead. Just a bit of fog. Take the wheel Josh. Keep ‘er to starboard and check in with Karl if you have any questions. I’m going below. It’s been a busy morning.

  • Same quote: “Anyone hoping that today’s staff shake-up might represent a change in direction for the Bush White House….”

Hooray! The Captain of the Titanic is still staying the course. Damn the icebergs and full speed ahead toward November.

  • Window dressing. Nothing more, nothing less. This wont change a thing, except that it could possibly sway a few of the hopeful morons out there who think that Bush would actually do some useful housecleaning. But face it, by now we know, it’s never about substance with these people…just image. What does the change look like to the uninformed. That’s the audience this administration will always play too. Dont forget Karls background – marketing. That’s all you need to know about this group – spin, imagine, PR, etc – and when that doesnt work, just go with straight propaganda, preferably through a paid off hack who appears to be independent.
