Memo to D. James Kennedy: Hitler, not Darwin, is responsible for the Holocaust

Guest Post by Morbo

Among TV preachers, D. James Kennedy stands out for his vociferous opposition to evolution. Kennedy’s Coral Ridge Ministries produces a torrent of anti-evolution books, pamphlets and DVDs. Kennedy is a rather dour Calvinist who really hates the theory of evolution.

I’ve seen some of the anti-evolution stuff Kennedy’s ministry puts out. It’s marked by the usual slipshod reasoning and bad science that is common among the Darwin bashers.

Now Kennedy has reached a new low: He is arguing that Darwin was responsible for the Holocaust.

A new Coral Ridge DVD, “Darwin’s Deadly Legacy,” aired on stations around the country last month. According to an article in The Washington Post, the so-called documentary and accompanying book “describe the Nazis’ embrace of eugenics and social Darwinism, their attempt to build a master race and to justify racism, slavery and even murder as survival of the fittest.”

John Aman, a Kennedy spokesman, told The Post:

“Darwinism is a philosophy, it’s a worldview, and one of the key things in it is that evolution advances by death, so death is a good thing. Hitler thought he was doing civilization a favor by eliminating lives that were not worth living. We of course think that is an egregious moral tragedy and a consequence of the worldview that was initiated by Darwin and popularized by his followers.”

Where to begin?

First of all, Social Darwinism was a late 19th century attempt by free-market business leaders to employ what they thought were Darwin’s views to justify the predatory capitalism of the period. It had nothing to do with real Darwinism. In fact, I’d venture that the business leaders who made the argument had no idea what Darwin really believed.

Secondly, evolution does not advance “by death.” Obviously, a successful species must reproduce and survive to pass along its genes. From an evolutionary perspective, death is not a good thing. If it were, the dinosaurs would still be riding high.

Finally, our current understanding of Darwinian evolution does not support Hitler’s ideas; it debunks them. Hitler believed some races were better than others. He despised Jews. He despised blacks. He believed in an innate superiority of certain white people living in certain nations.

Evolution tells us that “race,” in the sense Hitler and his followers used that term, is a myth. There is no “German race” because Germany is a political construct created by people in modern times to describe individuals who just happen to occupy a certain patch of land.

In fact, there is only one race: the human race. We’re all related because we share a common ancestry. We are free to hate one another on the basis of skin color, national origin or religion, but to do so makes no sense because we’re all brothers.

Many anthropologists these days argue for southern Africa as the cradle of humanity — a view that must make racists shudder. (Imagine all those klansmen in their white robes who, if they went back far enough, would discover that their ancestor was a small, brown Australopithecine.) Others contend for Asia. I am not aware of any who maintain that tall, blond Germans sprang magically from the soil of Europe endowed (by God?) with the right and power to lord it over others and systematically wipe out their perceived enemies by the mere proclaiming of themselves as a “master race.”

Hitler may have believed such nonsense. Charles Darwin certainly did not.

Dear Dr. Kennedy:

Someone whose social gospel apparently replaces Matthew 25 with ‘you’re on your own, bub’ shouldn’ t be talking about Darwinism.

It’s one thing to lie about Hitler, it’s another thing to pretend that the Prince of Peace was out there stumping around Roman Palestine pitching a gospel based on the inevitable superiorty of white, Protestant, male, members of the National Association of Manufacturers.

Oh, and get stuffed.

  • I remember a New Yorker cartoon that came out when I was attending San Francisco State (early ’60s). It showed a chimpanzee in a zoo pondering, “Am I my keeper’s brother?”

Apropos of nothing, there was another one from that era which showed two Eskimos standing in front of their igloo. Overhead were two missiles, one with the American flag painted on it, the other with the flag of the Soviet Union. One Eskimo said to the other, “Well, that’s the end of civilization as they know it.”

  • Zoroasterianism, the oldest religion, arose because the Aryans just couldn’t get along. Cattle rustling was the evolutionary spark of religion as we know it. At least that is one of the ideas in The Great Transformtion by Karen Armstrong, an excellent history of the creation of religions, She also said that Yahweh was a subgod of El before he got promoted to the one and only.

    Jesus was not a blond.

Evolve, devolve or get out of the way.

  • It’s true, it’s true I tell you!

Slavery and wide scale slaughter of entire groups of people didn’t exist before Darwin. Yeah. He started it. He EVOLVED it. In fact, he built a time machine and went back in time and made peaceful European explorers enslave and kill the indigenous people they encountered. They said, “Oh, no, please Chuck. We really don’t want to wipe out the Aztecs, we really don’t want to drive the Cherokee people off their land, and we really don’t think it would be nice to give these people blankets used by small pox patients because it will kill them.” But Darwin said (in a voice that sounded a lot like Darth Vader’s) “You will do it or I will unleash my Giant Radioactive Death Mice on your hineys,” so they had to do it.

And. And. No, wait! Darwin went all the way back to the begining of time (which of course started about 6,000 years ago) and when ever he found two groups of people with slightly different customs or skin colour or eye shape or hair cut getting along he forced one group to kill or enslave the other. Yeah. That’s it. Darwin made Cain kill Abel.

Stop laughing, darn it, it’s true!

By the way. There was NEVER a eugenics movement in the US. Or any where else for that matter. Like the Spartans. Who were a bit before Darwin Vader. Only they weren’t because of the time machine. And the mice. And there is absolutely no connection between Jim Crow laws in the US and the segregation of Jewish people under the 3rd Reich.
And by the way, Hitler was the first and only person in the whole world to make a concerted effort to kill as many Jewish people as possible. And of course Darwin made him do that because by that time the Death Mice had evolved into Death Bunnies and you do not want to annoy those critters.

Gaah! Will some one please take a bunch of history books and bludgeon Dr. Kennedy up the evolutionary ladder?

  • The whole eugenics-breeding-racial purity thing in Nazi Germany had nothing to do with evolution, though that is a canard that’s tossed out by the religious fruitcakes now and then. Selective breeding for desired traits has been around since humans domesticated the first animals. It only shows how far from our agrarian past we’ve come that idiots among us could believe that Darwin invented the idea of selection. Natural selection was just an elaboration of the idea of artificial selection, something with which Darwin’s 19th century world was well familiar with.

  • Social Darwinism is not, in fact, based on Darwinian notions of evolution. Philosophically, it is most closely aligned with the pre-Darwinian–and erroneous–evolutionary ideas of Jean-Baptiste Lamarck. People who refer to this form of social engineering as Darwinian are compying, usually unknowingly, with a project that associates the good name of a strong scientific theory of biology, Darwinism, with a falsified theory of biology, Lamarckism, as it is applied (wrongly) to social relations.

  • Of course Jacob himself was a Lamarckian (remember the spotted goats?), but in the story it worked out for him.

But seriously, you really could argue that evolution advances by life! (and by successful procreation, hmmm, maybe that’s why fanatics rail against it…)

  • Kennedy, whether he wishes to admit it or not, is cut from the same cloth as the three infamous theologians of Hitler’s German Reich: Paul Althaus, Emmanuel Hirsch, and Gerhard Kittel. As during the rise of Naziism on the European continent during the previous century, the underlying theme of today’s ultra-evangelical Theofascism is a sense of pride in the people; a group spirituality that seemingly annoints both individual and group with an almost-God-like status. In Hitler’s Germany, this “sense-of-pride” was given the name “Volkskirche.”

The Volkskirche was elemental in establishing the concept of “German Christians;” it was common assumption during the time of the Third Reich that the “Deutsche Christen” was the only legitimate mode of religious expression. All others were deemed to be “false,” “satanic,” or “linked with the crime of Judaism.”

In examining today’s ultra-evangelical radicalism, as promoted by Dr. Kennedy, one finds that the restrictive orthodoxy of his venomous diatribes is, once again, promoting a form of “Nationalistic Deification.”

One can only speculate, at this point, what the possibilities are, should the proper amounts of disinformation, fear, an appeal to common sense based upon dangerously-literal interpretations of metaphorical data, and the call to seize control of the government, the nation, and the People through any means necessary, in order to legitimize a downward-spiraling matrix of increasingly extreme and criminal measures to combat some perceived evil.

Kennedy and his ilk are, without a shred of doubt, the “founding fathers” of the American Taliban. They are the enemies of America, her People, and her Constitution—and should, at all costs, be resisted, and repelled….

  • It should be noted that evolution is advanced by an increase in genetic diversity. This is allows for a wider variety of traits to to improve chanced of the survival of a species. What Hitler wanted to do would actually undermine the genetic fitness of our species.

  • To the haters:

Because you don’t agree or understand the philosophy Kennedy espoused, you hate him.Because you disagree with him politically, you go into hysterics: “He’s trying to kill me…He wants a Taliban type government..He desperately wants to subvert the Constitution”. .. ad nauseum. Such extreme rhetoric nullifies anything reasonable you might have to say.

Whenever small minds disagree, they resort to personal attacks or change the subject.

Why don’t you argue intellectually and make your point?

For example, Kennedy’s Darwin/ Hitler point is perfectly reasonable and plausible.

If Darwinism helped change enough of those who held Germany’s Reformed Christian outlook to a more humanistic philosophy and increased the number of people who look at human beings as just another species under the paradigm of “survival of the fittest”, instead of creatures lovingly created in the image of God by a Supreme Being, it created an atmosphere where Hitler’s ideas were more readily acceptable.

You may disagree, but it is a perfectly logical point.

But instead of trying to understand his point and argue honestly and respectfully, some of the posters here scream hatred.

And as U.E. McGill said, “It’s a fool that looks for logic in the chambers of the human heart.”

    Love to all (even haters),

    Salt

  • If there’s a Hell, I hope this fascist SOB is there along with his soul brother Falwell…

  • “instead of creatures lovingly created in the image of God by a Supreme Being, it created an atmosphere where Hitler’s ideas were more readily acceptable.”

Did you ever read “on the jews and their lies” by Martin Luther. I
Guess the jew were a little less lovingly created. To the point we
should kill them set fire to their synagogues. What a loving god!
