Miers and abortion

The fight over the future of the Supreme Court is not just about abortion rights. There’s so much more at stake, including the wall of separation between church and state, civil rights and civil liberties, privacy rights, environmental protections, and the ability of the government to regulate businesses to protect workers and consumers.

Having said that, everyone, everywhere, wants to know one thing: what’s Harriet Miers’ take on abortion rights?

ABC News reported this morning that her limited record suggests she opposes Roe.

While active in the Texas American Bar Association in late 1990’s, she was a leader of an unsuccessful movement to get the organization to rescind its pro-choice positions and support for taxpayer-funded abortion for poor women.

Since she’s highly unlikely to discuss the issue during her confirmation hearings, this is about all we’ll get to know about Miers and abortion rights.

And that’s the most ridiculous thing of it. Roberts breezed through confirrmation hearings while saying as little as possible. At this point Miers could probably refuse to answer every question and still get the seat.

  • All you have to know is who vetted this woman: Karl Rove.

If you think he wants Roe overturned, you’re crazy. Once Roe is overturned, think how much voter motivation, fundraising, advocacy, and sermonizing all goes away!

Rove isn’t a conservative. He’s a power monger. Having Roe in effect is good for GOP elections. No Rove approved nominee will overturn Roe.
