Mini-report

Today’s edition of quick hits.

* That Iraq NIE still needs to be released — voters’ sake, before the election.

* In New Jersey today, Senate candidate Tom Kean, Jr. became the first Republican candidate for federal office to call for Hastert’s resignation.

* Considering that ABC News brought to their attention a sexual predator in their midst, shouldn’t House GOP leaders be thanking reporters for uncovering the Mark Foley scandal?

* There have been odd circumstances about Neil Bush, the president’s brother, trying to get rich off of No Child Left Behind for quite a while, but it appears the problem is getting worse. (Thanks to Geoff for the tip.)

* The AP and the O’Reilly Factor both made mistakes on Wednesday and identified Mark Foley as a Democrat. Can you guess which of the two ran a correction?

* Note to Republican candidates everywhere: if you use Hurricane Katrina as a positive example of government in action, voters will laugh at you.

* When conservative Republicans move away from Dennis Hastert, and Sen. Joe Lieberman (I) moves closer to Hastert, you know there’s a problem.

* Worst…recovery…ever.

* I knew the Department of Homeland Security was still having some trouble with the no-fly list, but this is ridiculous. (Thanks to E.T. for the tip.)

* It’s wrong to negotiate with terrorists, but if Mike Gallagher stopped those bastards from protesting the funerals of the five Amish girls killed on Monday, it was probably worth it to give them 55 minutes of airtime.

* The Foley scandal certainly is generating some interesting campaign advertising strategies.

* John Cole considers the president’s 2000 campaign promises and compares them to reality. It ain’t pretty. (I’m referring, of course, to the results of the comparison, not the post.)

If none of these particular items are of interest, consider this an end-of-the-day open thread.

I put together this list of websites associated with our usual commenter suspects for my own purposes (No, I’m not from the FBI) and thought others might want a copy (and maybe for a little community-building). I’m not a blog ho, I’m just a blog pimp. 🙂

  • CB: Considering that ABC News brought to their attention a sexual predator in their midst, shouldn’t House GOP leaders be thanking reporters for uncovering the Mark Foley scandal?

    that’s pre-9/11 thinking, CB, lol.

  • No Fly Rules

Maybe that’s what Bush means by protecting us from those terrorists. He’s talking about the dead ones that are still on the no-fly list.

  • When conservative Republicans move away from Dennis Hastert, and Sen. Joe Lieberman (I) moves closer to Hastert, you know there’s a problem.

If there are only 49 GOP senators after November 7, Lieberman will not serve as a member of the Democratic caucus. Full stop. He’ll either welch on his campaign promise to caucus with the Democrats or take a GOP job offer elsewhere. This is all the confirmation we need.

  • I appreciate what Mr. Gallagher did, though I think every time Phelps’ and his brood go out in public it brings us closer to the glorious day when someone sticks their fist up Phelps and yanks that damn cowboy hat down into his hollow skull. However, the idea of those violent yahoos among the Amish is particularly grotesque. Like pimps in a convent.

I went to Mike Gallagher’s website and made the mistake of reading the WBC’s (Witless Bastard C***s?) press release on their plan to disrupt the funeral. Granted, they’re what Jesus would call “Radioactive Assholes” (and the way they worded the release makes it sound like the gunman was working for them). But I wonder if these charming little dingleberries fit the definition of enemy combatant:

    1. They get off whenever a soldier is killed by an IED.
    2. They think IEDs are the “Sword of God.”
    3. They take their hate show to the funerals of soldiers killed in action.

Does that count as offering support to terrorists? Not that I want anyone locked up forever and tortured, but if the government is going to do it any way…

  • Vintage CB:

“Considering that ABC News brought to their attention a sexual predator in their midst, shouldn’t House GOP leaders be thanking reporters for uncovering the Mark Foley scandal?”

    Virtual me:

But then Grasshopper…. down wouldn’t be up would it?

  • If the Dems are counting Lieberman in their camp they haven’t been paying attention. Lets face it. Lieberman really wants to be a republican. His bipartisan schtick is his way of being a republican without coming right out and announcing it. The easiest way to understand Liebermans behavior is to think of him as a republican. Then it all makes sense.

  • Ok, anyone that’s interested, I have a bulletin board up for anyone to post in. I’ll try to get to work creating content in the blog 🙂

  • Phreddie the Theofascist Phreeloader Phelps needs a healthy dose of his own medicine. Suppose a lot of different groups got together—groups that represent what this fiend and his mongrel spawn hate the most—and form mass demonstrations outside his little Waco-esque compound. Do it every Sunday, and see how Phreddie likes it.

Every time he shows up at a funeral with a dozen of his ilk—return the favor with a thousand raucous voices. Will it stop him? Probably not—but it’ll sure as Hades sink into at least his followers that what goes around, comes around….

  • End of Day open thread comment…

    This from Josh Marshall:

” Number of Democratic strategists who think Denny Hastert should remain Speaker through November 7th. 100%. That’s my poll, not SurveyUSA. My methodology was to think about it for about 3 seconds. But I believe the margin of error is extremely low.”

    Hush old son.

Since when do we give away free IQ points to torturers?

  • Color me surprised.

Federal appeals court judges nominated by President Bush are threatening and undermining Americans’ rights and liberties, and working to reduce congressional authority to protect those rights and liberties, according to a legal analysis published today by People For the American Way Foundation.

  • From New Scientist.

Frustrated by their government’s position on the environment, climate change and stem cell research, a group of US scientists have decided to take matters into their own hands and actively promote the election of a president in 2008 who is more receptive to science.
