Throughout American history, there have been spies who have, on occasion, infiltrated the federal government and obtained valuable secrets. Throughout that history, no spy has ever been able to breach the White House itself. That is, until the Bush gang took over.
Officials tell ABC News the alleged spy worked undetected at the White House for almost three years. Leandro Aragoncillo, 46, was a U.S. Marine most recently assigned to the staff of Vice President Dick Cheney.
“I don’t know of a case where the vetting broke down before and resulted in a spy being in the White House,” said Richard Clarke, a former White House advisor who is now an ABC News consultant.
Federal investigators say Aragoncillo, a naturalized citizen from the Philippines, used his top secret clearance to steal classified intelligence documents from White House computers.
In 2000, Aragoncillo worked on the staff of then-Vice President Al Gore. When interviewed by Philippine television, he remarked how valued Philippine employees were at the White House.
“I think what they like most is our integrity and loyalty,” Aragoncillo said.
In this particular embarrassment, Aragoncillo wasn’t working with al Queda; he used his power — he started his efforts while working in Dick Cheney’s office — to obtain classified documents on the president of the Philippines, which he then passed on to the opposition that were planning a coup at the time.
Whether the spy stole information that endangered the U.S. directly is secondary to the fact that it happened at all. As John Martin, who was the government’s lead espionage prosecutor for 26 years, said, “Even though it’s not for the Russians or some other government, the fact that it occurred at the White House is a matter of great concern…. Of course, it is a source of embarrassment when you find out that this kind of activity has been carried out literally right under your nose.”
In context, there’s reason to wonder if the Bush gang appreciates national security secrets at all. In one instance, they intentionally leaked the name of an undercover CIA agent. In another instance, the administration allowed a spy to work alongside Doug Feith and Paul Wolfowitz in order to collect intellingence on Iran and leak it to Israel. In another instance, the White House wanted to turn power in Iraq over to an Iranian spy. Now we learn that a Philipino spy worked alongside the Vice President.
The Bush gang realizes we want to keep national secrets secret, right? That “Manchurian Candidate” thesis is looking more apt all the time.
