The president was in up state New York this morning for yet another scripted Social Security event for loyal sycophants. He took a moment to explain the political problem with privatization as he sees it.
“I fully recognize some in Washington, you know, don’t particularly want to address this issue,” Bush said in an auditorium at Greece Athena Middle and High School. “I recognize some of them say, ‘Well, this is, this is a partisan thing. You know, we don’t want to make one party look good at the expense of another.'” (emphasis added)
Now, I realize that Bush has limited experience in government, but seriously, when was the last time he met a politician in Washington who was worried about making one party look good at the expense of another? Bush has heard some people say this? OK, Mr. President, name one. In fact, talk to Karl Rove and the rest of your staff and ask if any of them are concerned with making Republicans look good at the expense of Democrats.
Bush is clearly confused. Indeed, if this is the president’s rationalization for why his privatization scheme is failing so badly, the entire debacle is starting to make some sense.
It’s a shame Bush’s bubble shields him from reality-based information. It might help him understand why things are going so poorly for him.
