No wonder they called him ‘whip’

Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), the frontrunner to replace Tom DeLay as House Majority Leader, has a successful political action committee that complements his own “K Street” operation. And who are the top donors to Blunt’s Rely On Your Beliefs PAC? According to a report in subscription-only Roll Call, it’s a funny story.

Seeing as he’s an outspoken social conservative, some folks were surprised to find out that one of the largest contributors to Rep. Roy Blunt’s (R-Mo.) political action committee last year was a businessman who made his fortune in the 1990s off the phone-sex business.

Jeffrey Prosser, dubbed by the Columbia Journalism Review in a 1998 story “a world-class phone-sex operator,” gave $5,000 to Blunt’s Rely On Your Beliefs fund in 2005 and his wife, Dawn Prosser, gave another $5,000, making them the largest donor couple to Blunt’s PAC.

A Dem staffer on the Hill told Roll Call, “If I received special interest money from phone-sex magnates, my eyebrows would be in surprise mode all the time, too.”

So, an embarrassed Blunt will return the money? Not so much. Keri Ann Hayes, the PAC’s executive director, said, “Mr. Blunt was not aware of the colorful history of this individual contributor when his PAC accepted the donation.” She added, however, that the donation was legal and ethical, so Blunt will not return the money.

What will James Dobson think?

It’s lonely up there on Capitol Hill.

  • Compare this to the Republican spin about the Democrats accepting $1.5 M from Abramoff’s clients. Apparantly, if you are a client of a crooked lobbyist who bilked you out of millions, your direct contributions are tainted too 😉

But getting $10,000 in campaign contributions from phone sex operators, that’s okay.

  • Just proves that the Rethugs, in fact, truly are nothing but whores.

(My apologies to real-life ADULT sex workers in this country… probably the most honest of all capitalists in the world)

  • In Michael Moore’s 1997 movie “The Big One” there is a segment where he sets up bank accounts for groups with various objectionable names such as Abortionists for Buchanan and Satan Worshippers for (I forgot which Repug). He uses checks with these groups’ names on them to make contributions to the GOP field in the 96 elections. I forgot who accepted and who returned which ones, but it was a fun experiment.

Maybe our community of CBR readers can do something like this ten years later to see how low things have sunken. Contest anyone? Entries could be judged on creativity and appropriateness of the name of the group vis a vis the targeted politician. Bonus points for any check actually cashed by a campaign or PAC associated with a politician. The only bad part is we run the risk of actually giving money to these “evil doers”. I was thinking we could find a sponsor to match donations by giving to Dems, but the whole point of the contest is that the candidates don’t see it coming.

Any takers? Carpetbagger, what do you think?

  • C’mon CB! ‘m sure Dobson and his ilk will applaud it along this line:

Blunt heroically outfoxed the godless fornicators. He took their ill-gotten booty and cleansed it in the light of the baby Jesus. Taking money from these filthy secularists and turning it to God’s cause shows how deeply he cherishes his Christian convictions.

With the Christian right, if you talk the right talk, you can do no wrong.

  • “Now I feel cheap and dirty; I had no idea that money was going to Roy Blunt!” — James Dillon

    Best – Comment – Ever !

  • The notion that $10,000 came into a PAC and no one had any idea who the guy was is just absurd. People don’t make contributions like that unless they are solicited and have some significant interest in the PAC’s candidate.

  • It’s fun making these comments, but let’s go back to 2 examples from the past:
    1) the porn filmmaker that bought his way (with one of his leading ladies) into a Whitehouse fundraising dinner. Did Bush suffer any damage?
    2) although Whoopi Goldberg lost endorsements for her riff on the name Bush, did Laura Bush get dinged for her “George milking a horsecock” joke?
There is no honesty from most of the right-wing. There is no irony, no shame, and no sense of decency.
Power is their God, and their talent for image making (and buying) is their greatest weapon.

  • Arabian Stallion Cum Garglers For Dick and Bush

    Yeah . . . That’s MY PAC!

    Uh huh . . . Uh huh . . .

  • Another Republican of the year!

As I recall their first choice couldn’t show up to recieve his award due to serving 26 years on a minor sodomy charge (as with a minor) so they gave it to a guy who was awaiting trial for bong manufacturing.

More of the same abram culture.

  • I understand that Blunt and the other members of his “Gang of Seven” are referred to as “Rebels” (wtihout a doubt a reference to their Confederate/Pro-Slavery allegiances.)

Funny, isn’t it, how we refuse to come to grips with the main problem underlying ALL American problems. Racism is constantly tossed over the shoulder in hopes that it will “just disappear” instead of being confronted and intelligently discussed.

Small men like those who still enjoy continuing the confederate rebel racist behavior tactics are ignorant to the extreme.

  • Come, come… phone sex is noting more than “Good Christian Fellowship”. Probably another case where some “pastoring” is in order…

  • Doh,

Supposedly this prosser guy owns a utility company of some sort, some of the folks who use his service happen to be 900 numbers. Hardly a “world-class phone-sex operator”

No one likes a tabloid-esque story more than Roll Call…
