Note to Bush: don’t brag about U.S. pollution

I saw some headlines yesterday about Bush departing the G8 summit this week, with many news items noting, “Goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter.”

I assumed it was some kind of sarcastic paraphrase, with international news outlets poking fun at the Bush administration. According to some accounts, it was actually a direct quote.

George Bush surprised world leaders with a joke about his poor record on the environment as he left the G8 summit in Japan.

The American leader, who has been condemned throughout his presidency for failing to tackle climate change, ended a private meeting with the words: “Goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter.”

He then punched the air while grinning widely, as the rest of those present including Gordon Brown and Nicolas Sarkozy looked on in shock.

According to the same report, an official who witnessed the scene said, “Everyone was very surprised that he was making a joke about America’s record on pollution.”

UK’s Independent added: “His remarks were taken as a two-fingered salute from the president from Texas who is wedded to the oil industry.” (In England, a “two-fingered salute” is not a peace sign.) What’s more, the reports have been picked up by U.S. outlets, including the NYT and the LAT.

I’m actually not sure what’s more humiliating — our pollution, Bush bragging about our pollution, or Bush “punching the air while grinning widely” in front of world leaders after a discussion on global warming.

When the LAT asked the White House for a comment, a spokesperson said, “I don’t have anything on this for you.” That’s not especially surprising.

And, of course, the timing of these reports couldn’t be much better.

Because, while Bush is boasting to world leaders about pollution, he’s also making clear that he’ll let his successor tackle greenhouse gas emissions.

The Bush administration has decided not to take any new steps to regulate greenhouse gas emissions before the president leaves office, despite pressure from the Supreme Court and broad accord among senior federal officials that new regulation is appropriate now.

The Environmental Protection Agency plans to announce today that it will seek months of further public comment on the threat posed by global warming to human health and welfare — a matter that federal climate experts and international scientists have repeatedly said should be urgently addressed.

The Supreme Court, in a decision 15 months ago that startled the government, ordered the EPA to decide whether human health and welfare are being harmed by greenhouse gas pollution from cars, power plants and other sources, or to provide a good explanation for not doing so. But the administration has opted to postpone action instead, according to interviews and documents obtained by The Washington Post.

To defer compliance with the Supreme Court’s demand, the White House has walked a tortured policy path, editing its officials’ congressional testimony, refusing to read documents prepared by career employees and approved by top appointees, requesting changes in computer models to lower estimates of the benefits of curbing carbon dioxide, and pushing narrowly drafted legislation on fuel-economy standards that officials said was meant to sap public interest in wider regulatory action.

The decision to solicit further comment overrides the EPA’s written recommendation from December. Officials said a few senior White House officials were unwilling to allow the EPA to state officially that global warming harms human welfare. Doing so would legally trigger sweeping regulatory requirements under the 45-year-old Clean Air Act, one of the pillars of U.S. environmental protection, and would cost utilities, automakers and others billions of dollars while also bringing economic benefits, EPA’s analyses found.

One of the participants in the interagency debate told the WaPo, “They argued that this increase in regulation should be on the next president’s record.”

By one count, the president has publicly vowed to “solve problems, not pass them on to future presidents and future generations” in upwards of 400 times.

And in each instance, he didn’t mean a word of it.

I’d say we need to hide our heads in shame, but really, we didn’t vote for him.

The man is such a little Frat Boy.

  • By one count, the president has publicly vowed to “solve problems, not pass them on to future presidents and future generations” in upwards of 400 times.

And in each instance, he didn’t mean a word of it.

Of course not – he is the great trickster president, the king of bait and switch. He is the carnival barker sucking people in to play fixed games of chance and believing that he’s heroic in doing so. (Was his action caught on video at all?)

  • He’s not even trying to act dignified anymore. He’s given up. He should probably be on suicide watch or something.

Collectively, isn’t he our responsibility? Other countries don’t care that we didn’t vote for him because they are being subjected to his shenanigans unwillingly.

I don’t know who to blame for this guy. It’s hard for me to call 55% of the country “stupid” to vote for him, because what does that mean for our future? Are we really composed of millions of morons? Is that why McCain is only 6% behind in the polls?

  • on the one hand, it’s refreshing to see Bush accept his inner idiot. After all, many philosophies believe you must accept who you are – including your faults – before you can improve yourself…

the problem here is, Bush isn’t merely accepting his inner idiot. He’s embracing his inner idiot. He LOVES his iner idiot. Because as stupid as he truly is, he’s still the President, isn’t he? Our democracy of dunces has never held him responsible for his actions. Even in his stunted intellectual growth, he knows he’s more deserving of a seat in a holding cell in the Hague than on Air Force One. And yet, he’s never had his feet held to the fire. He’s never been called on his bluffs. He’s a sadistic bully strutting through a school hall filled with people who are more intelligent than he is, yet too cowed to stand up to him & his gang of sadists. So, really, WHO’S the idiot? The fool who leads us, or all the fools who continued to let him lead?

Most frightening is the idea that, since he’s embracing & loving his inner idiot, he may have also embraced the concept that he has nothing to lose. And that’s one slippery step away from full-blown psychosis. An attack on Iran? He won’t think twice about it, and he certainly won’t lose sleep over it. And who knows what other awful ideas are rattling around that misfiring brain of his? I have no problem believing that he knows he’s the worst President in our nation’s history, & he’s decided, if he’s gonna own that record, why not take whatever steps are necessary to insure he never loses it? It’s like owning your fraternity’s record for getting away with date-raping the most co-eds. Nothing to be proud of in the slightest, in fact, you should be sucidally ashamed. But no one’s holdig you responsible, and in some awful, awful circles, your record is hailed, even envied. Might as well be a hero to somebody, even if they’re assholes who consider you their role model, so pass the roofies & let’s throw a kegger. That Bill of Rights is sooo asking for it.

Lest it need to be said, I’m not a true progressive, & I don’t know what I’m talking about.

  • I always think that Bush can’t go any farther than he already has to embarrass us in front of the entire world. I’m always wrong.

  • I hope the Repubs have printed up “BUSH: The Final Humiliation Tour” so we can have something wearable to remind future generations of what an idiot we had as President. For TWO terms!

  • “As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents,
more and more closely, the inner soul of the people.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land
will reach their heart’s desire at last and
the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”

    H.L. Mencken (1880 – 1956)

  • Let it be known throughout the world:
McCain = Bush; Bush = McCain.
The truth of their plan they’ve now fully unfurled:
“We so love these Profits that come from your Pain.”
    Into the Abyss our Republic they’ve hurled;
    Our Honor they’ve twisted; Truth’s Arrow, they’ve twirled;
Our Laws stomped asunder by the jigs that they’ve whirled———-
    McCain = Bush; America’s Bane!

  • I am not sure whether to scream or just laugh maniacally. Such is the nature of the existentially absurd. Sure, anyone who wants to be president has to be fairly self-important. But this level of exhibitionist self-absorption is terrifying. Next we’ll hear that he’s given up speechifying altogether in favor of nationally televised wanking. It would be no more offensive than what he has just done.

  • I read the full article from The Telegraph that CB provided a link to. There is another beauty in there:

Mr Bush also faced criticism at the summit after Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian Prime Minister, was described in the White House press pack given to journalists as one of the “most controversial leaders in the history of a country known for government corruption and vice”.

The White House apologised for what it called “sloppy work” and said an official had simply lifted the characterisation from the internet without reading it.

I can’t quite decide which is worse in this little screw-up: that the White House in put out such a description of an allied leader (Yes, it can be argued that there is a fair amount of truth in the description, but you still don’t do it.) OR the explanation for how it happened. Afterall, the explanation admits to incredible incompetence as well as plagiarism. Maybe we should just be happy they have admitted it.

  • We need this man to be on the teevee and intertubes constantly for the next four months. The embarrassment he has become (and truly always has been) will be enough to sink the USS McCain. Just repeat “Bush’s third term” over the huggy bear picture enough times and the Democrats could win with a convicted child molester. Uh oh, I just gave the slime machine a new idea for an attack ad.

Global warming? Rising sea levels? “F…K YOU, ” he signals. How presidential. Apparently the devestation of one American city on his watch wasn’t enough and George Bush wants his legacy to be a worldwide devestation of coastal habitation. How does that play in Florida, I wonder? I guess it doesn’t matter now that Jeb! isn’t the governor anymore.

If there was anyone in the Republican party who had an ounce of integrity they would do what was done in 19th century Russian. Rather than allowing a court martial to embarrass the regiment, a loaded pistol would be left on the desk of the disgraced officer so he would “do the right thing.”

I don’t know who to blame for this guy. It’s hard for me to call 55% of the country “stupid” to vote for him, because what does that mean for our future? Are we really composed of millions of morons? Is that why McCain is only 6% behind in the polls?

    Short answer: yes.

Longer answer, in order to prevent a bad leader, it is necessary to have an opposition party with courage and integrity.

  • Remember when Bush thought giving Chancellor Merkel a backrub was a good idea?

Same kind of thing. Just unthinking idiocy. The whole presidency has been strictly for laughs with Bush. He’s a made a pile, his Dad is happy with Cheney running things, and if McCain gets elected…I don’t even want to finish that thought.

Seriously, Bush has to be the worst kind of President and the worst kind of man. Incredibly rich and incredibly stupid. There was a push for a while, even among the lefties to prove that Bush wasn’t stupid “because he went to Harvard” and his folksy charm act was exactly that.

But the closer he gets to ending this Presidency, the closer you get to realizing, he is actually as stupid or more so than we originally thought. The frat boy comment is spot on except that it’s an insult to drunken frat boys everywhere. I’m sure they at least have to cram for finals. I don’t think Bush ever did. He certainly missed American History 101 that’s for damned sure.

  • There ain’t no doubt I love this land!
    God bless the U.S.A.!

By which I mean: “Fuck me running! When will it end????”

  • And now the Republicans have another idiot running, only got into the naval academy because dad and granddad were admirals, finished 5th from the bottom of his class. Luckily for us, this one covers his ignorance with aggression instead of frat boy pranks so at least he won’t embarrass by acting unprofessional. OTOH, he will have a stronger military than everyone else in the world put together to use to avenge slights to his massive ego. What could go wrong?

  • Bu$h the man child. I wonder if he screamed air assault at the top of his lungs while he was punching the air.

  • “His remarks were taken as a two-fingered salute…”

I believe there was only one finger involved in this “salute”.

  • Imagine the Statue of Liberty with the One-Fingered Salute in place of the torch, and the face of GWB on her. That is the message he is sending the world.

    May God Save the Queen,

    peace,
    st john

  • Bush doesn’t care about anything much anymore; for him personally, whatever happens now doesn’t matter. He’s presided over another disaster, but that’s nothing new. He’s not running for anything, his approval ratings are completely in the toilet anyway, and the DC establishment has no stomach for holding him or his cronies responsible for their crimes. It’s too late for him to try any positive initiatives (and those never work for him anyway – remember Mars?) And he’s rich enough that whatever shitstorm is coming won’t affect him. So he’s just marking time. Only thing left is to sign the blizzard of pardons just before the inauguration; those will be his final FU to his enemies.

  • All one can say is: Thank you Nancy “Impeachment is off the table” Pelosi. She is a bigger ass hole than Bushit. One can only wonder how she can look at herself in the mirror as she shaves her legs…

  • ALL good comments above about the “disaster” we have at our once-great country’s helm.
Particularly “Deborah’s”. (That writing class seems to be working!).

And for Taritac@6, yes, millions and millions of our fellow countrymen voted that moron back into office in 2004. May the shame still be on their collective heads.

  • “His remarks were taken as a two-fingered salute…”

I believe there was only one finger involved in this “salute”.

In England, the “two-fingered salute” IS the “one-fingered salute.

Why are Americans so sadly ignorant of international culture??? (/snark)

  • We are trapped in an ongoing, sick, too real, cartoon for 193 more days. And then a very long and serious aftermath. As Bush prays, America goes down the shitter.

  • For everyone who thinks George W Bush hasn’t lifted a finger to do anything about Global Warming, I’d say it looks like he finally lifted one.

  • Come on, why is anyone shocked or surprised about this? This worthless little man has lived his entire life this way. Mediocre (if any) achievement in the midst of living a massive party. That’s how he dealt with college, all his jobs and business ventures, and his few political offices. He has fun, does nothing right, gets bailed out by his family and wealthy friends, and leaves behind a mess for his successor to take care of.

He’s just a drunken frat boy living in permanent fun-time. How can anyone still not understand that?

  • I really, truly, honestly believe he’s on the sauce again.

Just look at some of his recent interviews/pressers — on more than one occasion, he slurred his way through the whole thing.

Seriously. Not trying to be Mr. Conspiracy or anything. I just think the pressure got to him and he’s back to his old habits.

    **shrugs shoulders**

  • It’s not that we don’t understand it, Shade Tail; it’s that some gestures are so Fuck You that they still have the ability to inspire shock. It’s like someone bragging about having the most starving people in their country–except that our pollution affects the rest of the world.

I worry about outrage fatigue coming out of the last eight years; I look at terrible things that would have made me jump out of my skin a decade ago and incline my head resignedly. That, unfortunately, is how a thoroughly corrupt, thoroughly totalitarian state gets built, one little step at a time, with a bit of time between steps for people to get used to them. There isn’t anything wrong with holding onto our ability to be grossly appalled and angry–we’re going to need it going forward.

  • No argument…except that there is a difference between being outraged and being surprised. I long ago stopped being surprised at the excesses this joker gets to, but my rage at him is as white-hot as it ever was. I’m merely treating each new incident as another on the long list of reasons to be furious.

  • In the past, I have sometimes said that Republicans are such pain in the butt because they lack sense of humour. I take that back. Both Bush and McCain (yet another similarity between the two) do have a sense of humour. Exquisitely excruciating sense of humour.

  • I lost all respect for Pelosi and the dem leadership who are forcing us to continue to endure this corporate controlled tyrant. He just wants the dems to be charged with “regulation” even though it is desperately needed. His politics are shameful and yet he’s still in office.

Everyday I live in fear of this president …of what he might do next. He no longer even pretends to care abut the welfare of our country only the profiteering of his corporate buddies, and we are powerless as the public to stop him.

America…how far we have fallen under this monarch.

There should be no throne in America for Bush to descend or Obama to ascend.

I hope the G-8 members realize that Bush does not speak for the country as should be obvious by the polls. Stephen Johnson of the EPA should be on the “shun” list rated “despicable”

  • Taritac said:

“He’s not even trying to act dignified anymore. He’s given up. He should probably be on suicide watch or something.”

He’s not worried. His library has $100m to cook the records. We can look forward to a lot more twisted think tanks throwing their opinions into the works.

“I don’t know who to blame for this guy. It’s hard for me to call 55% of the country “stupid” to vote for him, because what does that mean for our future? Are we really composed of millions of morons? Is that why McCain is only 6% behind in the polls?”

My son says, “Mom you have to remember that more than half the country has IQs that are around room temperature.” That’s why all those crazy claims aimed at public perception actually work. There’s no incentive for most people to check the truth and the MSM doesn’t provide the information for us…

  • If he’s on a suicide watch I volunteer to stand guard to make sure no one stops him.
