Note to Dems: Newt Gingrich is not ‘a great thinker’

He may have decided to drop a possible Republican presidential campaign, but former House Speaker Newt Gingrich isn’t done trying to shape the political world. Much to my dismay, some powerful Democrats have decided to take him seriously.

Roll Call reports today that Gingrich was on Capitol Hill last week, pitching the results of a poll his latest advocacy group — American Solutions for Winning the Future — recently conducted. Apparently, in 2004, the former Speaker presented a laundry list of ideas and polling data to Republican leaders, but Gingrich wasn’t satisfied that his party took his materials seriously enough.

So, last week, he was a little more bi-partisan about it.

Gingrich held separate meetings last Wednesday with House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel (Ill.) and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman Charles Schumer (N.Y.). […]

The same polling information — which Gingrich formally unveiled Tuesday at the National Press Club — also has been circulated to Republican leaders on the Hill, although no formal meetings have been set to discuss it.

A Gingrich spokesman said the former Speaker had commissioned a similar polling report during the 2004 presidential election and distributed it only to Republicans. But he said the GOP by-and-large ignored the data then and that was the reason Gingrich is seeking to provide both parties with the information now.

“Newt is in the process of presenting this polling data to both Republicans and Democrats,” Gingrich spokesman Rick Tyler said. “His premise is that a red-versus-blue America is inherently destructive to any party’s ability to get anything done.”

That’s absurd to the point of comedy. Gingrich was instrumental in creating the modern red-versus-blue dynamic. He went out of his way to make sure it was as “inherently destructive” as possible.

And yet, here’s the new-and-improved bipartisan Newt. Worse, leading Dems are taking this guy seriously.

Schumer said he was pleased to get the briefing.

“Newt Gingrich is a great thinker who is trying to find a way to bridge the gap between Democrats and Republicans, and that’s a good thing,” he said.

A spokeswoman for Emanuel declined to comment.

“It was great fun. They were both very receptive,” Tyler said. “These are two very smart politicians. When someone walks in and says this is what America thinks, they’re going to look at it.”

I don’t doubt that Schumer and Emanuel find it helpful to look at polling data from as many sources as possible. Apparently, Gingrich’s latest report cost $428,000 to compile, and consisted of six surveys addressing a total of 180 separate issues.

But for the DSCC chairman to praise Gingrich as “a great thinker” and someone who’s trying “bridge the gap” is just misguided. Worse, it plays into the hype machine that Gingrich has created for himself, which is premised on the notion that he’s some kind of visionary.

It’s disconcerting to think how short the political world’s memory really is. In the late ’90s, Gingrich developed a well-deserved reputation as something of a nut. He shut down the government (twice) and he pursued presidential impeachment over an adulterous affair (while carrying on an affair of his own). He suggested that the homeless should get laptops, touted the benefits of an old-school model of orphanages, and criticized the notion of women serving in combat roles because “males are biologically driven to go out and hunt giraffes.”

When was it, exactly, that even leading Dems started to think that Gingrich deserves respect?

And why do you suppose it is Schumer and Emanuel made time for a formal Gingrich briefing last week — but congressional Republicans didn’t?

How about looking at some polls that suggest impeachment or investigating Dick&Bush for their actions on 9/11.

Nah, listen to Newt Gingrich instead, Dems.

  • Fuck Chuck.

After his asinine statements regarding supporting Mukasey, I don’t take anything Schumer does seriously. He may as well caucus with Lieberman.

  • Well, you could have reported this as “unnamed Democratic leaders,” and I think we could easily have filled in the blanks with Schumer and Emmanuel; neither seem to understand that being a Democrat does not mean that you do all the accommodating and conceding, while the other side stands in place.

When there is such a slim majority in the Congress, it is harder to get things done, but in some cases, I would rather nothing get done than have what does get done look like a watered-down version of what we wanted. Sometimes half a loaf is not better than none.

Schumer and Emmanuel should be taking advantage of the huge gap in approvals for Democrats and Republicans and working their asses off not to recruit consensus candidates – we’ve seen how some of those Emmanuel-recruited freshmen have sold us out – but solid Democrats who can help advance what we have been begging them to get done.

I guess the bubble is soundproof, because we are all out here screaming these things and it’s as if they can’t hear what we’re saying.

  • Can someone please post a sign on Capital Hill “Do not feed the Bush Dogs kool-aid.” That should take care Newt’s latest schemes.

  • All anyone needs to know about it is that Gingrich is trying to get his name moving around and provide some fuel for his ambitions. He needs some popularity and he needs people talking about him. If he can’t stir it up one place, he’ll stir it up in another. Republicans are his main audience and those are the hearts he’s aiming for, but he just has to do something to get him on their radar again. Talking to the Dems is just a means to keep his name in the newspapers and on the political websites. Established Dem politicians and activists should ignore him. Dems who are very smart and are trying to make a living or a name for themselves should emulate his drive and dynamism.

  • Personally, I’ve never thought of Gingrich as anything but a gadfly. I don’t understand how he has gained the reputation of a visionary genius.

Modern day example of apotheosis. Some kind of internal need among human beings, to elevate and worship.

  • Dems don’t get it! Do they actually believe Republicans such as Newtie will do anything outside their own vested interests? Are the Dems so much into accommocation that they lose sight of those who have been hoodwinking our bodypolitik for far too long now? Republicans like Newtie G. don’t offer any future-looking solutions, but rather work to impose their vision of the world upon others – the more unassuming those “others” are, the more the Republicans can work their magic of getting what they want at the expense of the American public – if there is such a thing anymore what with all the privatization Newtie and his ilk have forced upon us all.

  • Of course, when Gingrich makes a last minute decision to run for Prez, or runs for something else in the future, you can bet there will be campaign spots saying “even the DSCC chairman praises Gingrich as ‘a great thinker’ and someone who’s trying ‘bridge the gap'” – and it will be a little hard for the poor handcuffed Dem candidate to fight back having been preemptively sold-out by their own Congressional leadership.

Newt is a great thinker in one regard: he is great at thinking up ways to manipulate his opponents for political gain. glad our leaders are too smart to fall for th. . . whats that you say? oh. nevermind.

(And Steve, while you are reminding folks that he shut down the government twice, we should also remember to highlight two salient facts: (1) one of those shutdowns was a juvenile tantrum about having to leave Air Force One down the back steps; and (2) both times he got his backside kicked by Clinton. Just a reminder that Clintons aren’t all bad.)

  • The only thing great about Newty Toot is his assholishness(not a real word, I know.) Thinker? You mean the man who poached off Alvin Toeffler?

No surprise that Chuck Amuck and DLC toadies would have at Newty Toot.

  • While we’re updating newt’s resume- how about newt getting himself established by taking down the Dem Speaker of the House – Jim Wright over Jim’s shady book deal – only to have to leave politics because of his own shady book deal?

  • My boss is a former Hill staffer and has absolutely nothing nice to say about Schumer — as my boss put it, the guy would sell his own mother if it meant he got a few more votes or campaign donations. I’ve been told some rather … interesting details about the guy.

This is what folks like Atrios mean when they say/type “we need better Democrats.”

  • Just a reminder that Clintons aren’t weren’t all bad.

    Fixed it for you, Zeigeist.

When Bill is calling criticism of his wife ‘swiftboating,’ he’s lost his credibility.

  • chuckie really can’t buddy up fast enough to these republicans, can he. first he provides cover for a torture-loving attorney general by enthusiastically supporting him — and lying to his constituents with his tortured defense.

next up is chuckie’s determination to keep his wall street pals fat and bloated and happy with all the ill-gotten booty they can stuff into their overseas accounts by sinking any taxation of the hedge fund pigs.

and now he’s in cahoots with newt.

    he really makes me sick.

  • “why do you suppose it is Schumer and Emanuel made time for a formal Gingrich briefing last week — but congressional Republicans didn’t?”

Because they have some secret plan to play up Gingrich’s capacity to sow dissent on the right, and once he…(slice) OUCH, WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?

Oh, right there on the handle, it says, “Occam’s Razor.”

No wonder I’m bleeding all over the place.

Let me change that first part: Because Schumer and Emanuel are sabotaging us.

There, that’s better. Well, not for us, but in terms of clarity.

It’s worthwhile to monitor Gingrich, but no Democrat in his or her right mind should be out kissing his ass.

  • … and most ‘merkun assholes still do not see anything wrong with dem pols … as I said before both parties are piles of shit … one pile is fresh and smelly the other formed a thin crust to ‘cover’ some of the smell but the dems are pols to begin with … why the fuck would anyone still believe a pol?!

  • I don’t think you have to tell the Dems that, tell it to the MSM, they seem to be in love with the guy this year. I wrote off the loser a long time ago, and am very surprised by his come back.

  • Swan’s right…Newt needs face time…needs his name floating around in the public eye and especially in the political domain in order to feel he is credible and of some importance. But never forget he is a hypocrite and focused on his self interests no matter what ‘bipartisan’ rhetoric he throws out there.

Emmanuel and Schumer are phonies and ignorant as hell when it comes to party leadership. They are consistently wrong and lack sound judgment always afraid someone will get upset at them or call them names if they take a stand that may be seen as unpopular. They avoid conflict whenever possible and always think they know what is best for the country yet are incapable of listening or hearing the demands of their constituents. They give the entire party a bad name and are best defined as political pansies. The party would lose nothing if they resigned their seats as they lack integrity and character always willing to compromise what they are supposed to stand for.

  • Senator Schmuck needs to get thrown in the Hudson. Rahm Emmanuel needs to go get a job from his brother Ari (the model for the king-putz agent on “Entourage”), since the worst thing he can do in Hollywood is screw up somebody’s job, which is less dangerous than screwing up a country.

Lieberman, Schumer, Emmanuel, a whole cabal of traitorous schmucks all by their own selves.
