California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger emigrated from Austria and has indicated his support for changing the constitution to allow naturalized citizens to run for president. He also, apparently, wants to dramatically cut back on anyone else entering the country.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Tuesday the nation’s policy on preventing illegal immigration is too lax, telling a group of newspaper publishers the United States needs to “close the borders.”
“Close the borders in California and all across Mexico and in the United States,” Schwarzenegger said at the annual meeting of the Newspaper Association of America. “Because I think it is just unfair to have all those people coming across, have the borders open the way it is, and have this kind of lax situation.”
It wasn’t too long ago that I assumed Schwarzenegger would be unbeatable if he sought re-election. But with dropping poll numbers, an ugly fight with California nurses, his aggressive fundraising with corporations with business with the state, and flaps such as this “close the borders” nonsense, all of a sudden, Schwarzenegger doesn’t seem quite so invincible anymore.
No wonder Dems like State Attorney General Bill Lockyer, Treasurer Phil Angelides, and Controller Steve Westly seem so anxious to get their gubernatorial campaigns in gear.
