Obama and ‘Merci beaucoup’ — the conservative outrage of the day

After some very encouraging comments on bankruptcy law in Georgia yesterday, Barack Obama opened the floor to some questions. Someone asked about preventing high-school dropouts and added that she believes “there should be a push more for our citizens to become bilingual here in America.”

I didn’t hear the entire response, but these comments on bilingualism seem to have caused quite a stir in conservative circles.

“You know, I don’t understand when people are going around worrying about, ‘We need to have English- only.’ They want to pass a law, ‘We want English-only,'” Obama said. “Now, I agree that immigrants should learn English. I agree with that. But understand this. Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English — they’ll learn English — you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish. You should be thinking about, how can your child become bilingual? We should have every child speaking more than one language.

“You know, it’s embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe, and all we can say [is], ‘Merci beaucoup.’ Right? (Laughter) You know, no, I’m serious about this. We should understand that our young people, if you have a foreign language, that is a powerful tool to get a job. You are so much more employable. You can be part of international business. So we should be emphasizing foreign languages in our schools from an early age, because children will actually learn a foreign language easier when they’re 5, or 6, or 7 than when they’re 46, like me.”

All of this sounds pretty sensible to me. Not surprisingly, a lot of conservatives don’t quite see it that way.

Commenting on Obama’s response, Andrew Leonard said, “There’s nothing particularly exceptional about Obama’s position, unless you are an English-only partisan cowering in fear of your cultural identity being swamped by funny-looking people from strange lands. Or one of the similarly insecure patriots who believe any criticism of the U.S. is a sign of ‘blame-America-first’ treachery.”

One might be surprised at just how many folks fall into these camps. Alex Knapp notes some of the high-profile conservative bloggers who are none too pleased with Obama’s comments:

Glenn Reynolds: “Barack Obama: Europeans are cooler than Americans.”

Tom Maguire: “Whoa. Reporting live from the United Kingdom, I have been assured that the typical Brit does not speak many (i.e., any) languages other than English and a smattering of American. Apparently Obama is aware that culturally, Britain is not part of Europe, and he assumes we know it as well.”

Gateway Pundit: “Obama is quite embarrassed that Americans are so boorish and refuse to speak French while traveling abroad. It’s so uncouth.”

The Weekly Standard went so far as to argue that Obama’s desire to see more American kids taught a foreign language is an example of “snobbery.”

Snobbery? Obama talked about this in the context of American competitiveness in a global economy. To care about these issues is to be a snob?

Alex Knapp, who as a conservative libertarian disagrees with Obama on most a whole lot of policy issues, concluded, “Frankly, all this seems to be is a pathetic attempt to feed the ‘Barack Obama is Unamerican’ narrative. A narrative that, I might add, has the result of making Americans sound like ignorant hillbillies. ‘He’s got a funny name!’ ‘He likes food that tastes good instead of crap that’s fried in lard!’ ‘He likes foreigners!’ ‘He wants to speak other languages!’ ‘He’s educated!’ ‘He played basketball instead of football!’ Embarrassing, really.”

Quite right. There’s an old joke you’ve probably heard — what do you call someone who speaks two languages? Bilingual. What do you call someone who speaks three languages? Trilingual. And what do you call someone who speaks one language? An American.

Obama thinks we’d be better off if that joke wasn’t funny anymore. I think he’s right.

Some conservatives sure do pick strange things to get excited about.

Not surprisingly, a lot of conservatives don’t quite see it that way.

Of course not. FOX News broadcasts its propaganda in English, so why do you need any other language? Huh? WHY?

=)

  • I have a good freind in Norway who years ago told me that every Norwegian child learns a second language. But what he meant was that they learn Norwegian and English, and then they learn a second foreign language.

  • Study after study show that learning another language is good for your brain. Republicans would obviously know nothing about this.

  • What happened to the requirements in high school and college that students take language courses? It was mandatory when I went to school and I thought it still was. But perhaps it is part of the dumbing of America. I am shocked at how little our students really know about the world.

  • What’s wrong with able to speak another language? I’ve found that this 2nd language phobia is usually common among those who either have no head for languages and/or can barely speak their native tongue (lots of them used to bitch about having to learn French where I live.)

I’m not “certified” bilingual but I can speak passable French given enough immersion (two weeks.)

  • God wrote the Bible in English. If He wanted us to learn other languages He would have written it in another language. Another proof Obama is not a Christian.

  • When I was in Viet Nam in 1968, as part of the “occupying force fighting Communism”, I was able to communicate with some of the local people because I knew a little French from high school and college courses. Many Vietnamese had learned French under the French occupation and were happy to talk with me, even though my French was less than fluent and my Vietnamese even worse. What this attempt to communicate in another language than English does is create a sense of community and caring for the other. I am sometimes embarrased by my lack of other language fluency, and that lack in other Americans(USAns). Barack is right. Our children should be learning at least one other language, whether Spanish, French, Farsi or other. It indicates a willingness to meet people where they are and not insist that they always must meet us where we are.

  • I’ve lost out on many job opportunities because I don’t speak Spanish (here in Florida).
Ironicly, many or most business owners employing Spanish speaking employees are Republicans.
Politics is one thing, more profit is another.

  • i travel annually to spanish speaking latin america, and i am ashamed that i cannot speak their language. unfortunately, at my age, it ain’t so easy to do any more, my brain doesn’t work right now. but i sure wish i had learned a second language (and regularly used it) when i was in high school.

obama is right on – it is totally embarrassing that most americans can only speak one language. the right wing are idiots (like i needed to say that….)

  • Obama is right as rain on this one. However, to implement what much of the rest of the civilized world has done for some time, i.e., teaching foreign languages in school, would require getting serious about educating our young. No-child-left-behind has converted what little real educating was going on into rote learning and indoctrination, and quite likely has turned off a whole generation of school children to the fun of learning.

If we’re serious about competing in a global marketplace language skills are one of the best tools we can give our young people. Less football, videogames, and MacDonald’s might help us swim in a rising tide of competition.

  • I was just about to mention McCain calling Social Security an absolute disgrace at a Townhall meeting when I saw these comments by Obama. Now the week’s filled.

  • Americans don’t speak other languages because the world speaks English.

The world speaks English because for 150 or so years, the dominant power in the world has been either England or the U.S. The American Century, you know.

Thanks in part to Bush II, the end of the American Century is in sight. We’ll know we’ve reached that horizon when we’re all learning Mandarin or maybe Hindi.

So I guess multilingual America is one thing we’ll have to thank him for.

  • It becomes more difficult to look down your nose at immigrants when you realize that they speak more of your language than you do of theirs. But conservatives have never shied away from parochialism; in fact, they’ve elevated it to a virtue. (For what it’s worth, I could probably say most of this, though with some difficulty, in a foreign language.)

  • I love the idea of a bilingual country.

However, to compare Europeans who speak French, Italian, etc. with Americans not knowing other languages is not a fair comparison for Barack to have made. Europe is situated in such a way that all of the countries are extremely close – or relatively close – to each other. It makes perfect sense that with business and travels they would learn the language of their neighboring countries. That being said, Spanish would be a great second-language for Americans. I studied it last semester after studying French in high school. I have rarely used French…so it doesn’t really make sense to pick up that language unless you are planning to travel extensively or live there. Spanish as a second language requirement in the U.S. makes sense. AND anyone living in this country needs to speak English, as well.

I think Barack’s comments showed his lack of cultural understanding of Europe and WHY people speak several languages there; sadly, I am not surprised by his lack of insight.

  • I grew up bilingual, German, actually didn’t speak much English until I went to kindergarten. In junior high school I was required to take two years of Spanish; in high school I was required to take two years of language, (including one year of scientific German); and in college I had another four semester language requirement, which took me into German literature. Those kinds of requirements were commonplace in the 1950s and 60s. They no longer are. Foreign languages became a frill, along with driver ed, home economics, and industrial arts, as special education began to eat up more and more of school budgets as a result of unfunded federal mandates.

Unlimited money for war. No real money for education.

  • Wha? We don’t need to learn that gobbledygook, Obama. They should speak English. And we should make English the official language, not just of the US, but of the world, and anyone who speaks word one of another language is a terrorist and should get a one way ticket to Guantanamo Resort and Spa (the water massage is fan-tastic!).

Next thing you know, he’ll be telling us we aren’t very good a history or geography.

    Hmphf.

  • If I hadn’t learned Spanish, my belt would only have 25% of the notches that it now has. Learning another language gets you laid. The republickers are too scared of the rest of the world. The poor frightened bastards should just STFU and hide under their beds.

  • #4 mishanti “What happened to the requirements in high school and college that students take language courses?” I seem to recall a time when language at University was also mandatory, when two years of a single language or one year of TWO languages was necessary for any simple bachelor degree. I don’t remember when that requirement started being waived, but it certainly infects one with “dumbing down” conspiracy theories and ideas of corporate control agendas (through research grants). Considering the popularity of Faux News, fundamentalist religion, and American Idol, maybe there was a plan—nahhh. 😉

  • Looking at my comment, I looked more likea troll than one with this community. My apologies.
I find myself much like just bill @ #9, embarassed to be mono-lingual, and challenged to chage that situation.
I am in agreement with Sen. Obama on this subject.

  • Well, if we required people to learn a second language, where would that leave all the home schoolers?

  • It’s true that Americans would be better off if we were multilingual. But Obama’s emphasis is all wrong.

We all need to speak English because this is a large and diverse country. What keeps us together is an understanding of the basic values embraced by our consitution and founding documents, and these values are transmitted in English. They are transmitted, not just in school, but through participating in the larger culture that is English speaking. English is a way of integrating all peoples into our society so that we have a common cultural understanding; this is necessary, but doesn’t mean that we have to give up the cultural heritage that we were born into and that reflects our family’s identity.

Once we have this shared language, then multilingualism is no longer controversial and learning another language can be emphasized as an important adjunct to becoming a more rounded human being.

  • It occured to me that speaking only one language would be like knowing only one version of MS/Word and insisting everyone learn how to create spreadsheets and flyers and publications and reports in MS/Word 97. It is possible, but comes with huge limitations and cost more in time and good will than it is worth. Who would hire me as an admin person, or communications operator or statistical clerk/manager if I could not operate a system other than the one I know, AND THEN REFUSE TO LEARN WHAT IS REQUIRED TO DO BUSINESS? No Republican I know would put up with this. This would also apply to using a MAC or other Operating System besides DOS/Windows. It makes no sense…

  • Europe is situated in such a way that all of the countries are extremely close – or relatively close – to each other. -DebDeb

That’s a weak argument against nothing more than a passing example Obama made when you consider that most, if not all, developed nations have a considerable population of English speakers as well. Granted, your argument holds water for France and Germany since they are near England and each other, but what about Japan? China?

These countries have large numbers of English speakers, yet very few people in the US are fluent in those languages. And surprisingly, we are as far away from China, Japan, and India as they are from us, so your proximity argument breaks down.

Additionally, in the modern world, proximity is no longer a valid excuse. I can do business as easily with a company in Germany as I can with one in Kansas.

Just look at how much trouble we’re having getting Arabic translators in our intelligence agencies.

Frankly, this is all about emphasis. We barely expect our children to learn English, and they barely do. We barely expect them to learn history, geography, science, everything. Education is a low priority in this country.

But Obama’s emphasis is all wrong. -Karen in Philadelphia

Suggesting that learning multiple languages keeps our children competitive in a world economy at a time when most people knowingly believe our economy to be declining is a perfect frame.

I fully believe in what you wrote about embracing multiple cultures as the spirit of this country, but also believe in the practical, economic reasons Obama cited. I don’t think it’s either/or.

  • I studied German in High School and Japanese in College and I retain none of it. Heck, I know more Korean than either of those, and that’s just from work.

Obama is totally right. Being multilingual works best if you start children young. All the English Only twits are trying to take a valuable asset, our 2nd generation imigrants and destroying their value a bilingual people by insisting they learn English and we teach ONLY English.

No-Nothings are nothing is not stupid.

  • “Suggesting that learning multiple languages keeps our children competitive in a world economy at a time when most people knowingly believe our economy to be declining is a perfect frame.”

Well, I don’t fully accept the argument that learning another language will help us compete in the global economy; one of the main reason so many foreigners speak English is because English is now used as the common language of communication for non-English speakers, not just for business but for social events as well. Thus, it really isn’t as necessary as it used to be to learn a foreign language to do business abroad.

On the other hand, if our economy (especially manufacturing) continues to go to hell, and the dollar continues to decline, we’ll all soon be primarily employed in tourist industries for visiting — and richer — foreigners from abroad. Might as well polish up our Mandarin and Arabic so that we can compete for jobs as hotel employees –

  • btw cb, love your headline – conservative outrage of the day. seems like all they have left.

too bad they can’t figure out the things they should be outraged about.

  • jimBOB asked “Well, if we required people to learn a second language, where would that leave all the home schoolers?”

    Does speaking in tounges count?

  • …English is now used as the common language of communication for non-English speakers, not just for business but for social events as well. -retr2327

    The operative word is now.

As today’s youth grows up, Chinese and Spanish will become more dominant as China and various Spanish speaking country’s economies mature.

It isn’t just about our economy tanking, it’s about other economies growing, and yes, we will have to study languages and cultures to remain competitive.

  • Buzzmon @ 30, while I’m not going to be a hypocritical doo schnozzle and imply you’re an awful human being for buying into that stereotype, my sister home schools, pretty much for the opposite reason you describe. Too many zealots IN the school system (both as students & teachers and administrators) and she noticed her daughter becoming more withdrawn and shy over the course of one school year. Being a former teacher, she picked up the lesson plan, and now both of her kids are home schooled and doing fine without the subtle indoctrination of the local, shall-we-say rigid? morality.

    Oh, and they’re learning Mandarin.

I know, stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason, but that doesn’t make them absolutes.

  • This idiot cannot speak French or Spanish why force Americans to speak another language. The Rev Wright sermans are getting through to this empty suit.

  • My cousin’s children in Finland speak Swedish in the home, learned Finnish as a primary language at school as well as English AND German. Finland is rated as the top educational system in the world. Schools here are too busy with sports and teaching to No Child Left Behind. There’s no time for “frills” such as intensive language study…..even English. As a former public school teacher I’m appalled at the spelling and grammatical errors I notice in high school graduate’s letters.

  • “I think Barack’s comments showed his lack of cultural understanding of Europe and WHY people speak several languages there; sadly, I am not surprised by his lack of insight.”

DebDeb@15, I agreed with your post until you wrote your final sentence, above. I’m sure Obama knows very well WHY most Europeans know several languages. And why we’ve barely been able to teach/learn other languages in our schools.

My son became fluent in Mandarin in college and after, when he lived and worked in Beijing and Shanghai for three years. Since his return to the States two years ago, he has had to take special weekend tutoring to keep himself fluent in the language. It IS a problem not to be able to use language skills on a frequent basis.

  • While we’re all learning, or resisting learning, another language, could we perhaps learn to spell English? And by the way, this thread seems rather troll-heavy. I’m lukin’ at yew DebDeb, WilC, et al.

Hmm . . . then again, perhaps my usually well tuned irony sensor is malfunctioning today. I call tech support . . .

  • Oooh, sorry. My studies in foreign language have made me a better English speaker. I wouldn’t really know the difference between an adjective and adverb without ole’ Mrs Dean beating into my head the difference between “mucho” and “muy.” Unlike our current President, my study of foreign languages helped me become a better speaker of English.

I work as a cook in a high-class hotel. Without the smatterings of Spanish, French, Italian and Russian I picked up from my high school and college education, I wouldn’t be as accessible as I am to my co-workers from Mexico, Africa, France and the Balkans.

  • But perhaps Obama is wrong. Look at how easily George W. made friends with the Saudis, despite having only a weak command of a single language….

  • I totally agree with Trixie. If I hadn’t learned about tenses and past and future perfects in German (also known as declining a verb but not many would understand that terminology either), I wouldn’t have known English as well as I do. Sadly, that doesn’t get taught in English class. You all know what I am talking about when you see someone on a TV interview said “I seen” instead of “I saw” or “I had went” somewhere instead of “I went” or “I had gone”.

I saw a joke sign the other day with an Amish wagon at a gas station and they used “they’re” instead of “their”. No one seems to remember that “they’re” is abbreviated because it’s short for THEY ARE and not to be confused with the possessive “their”. I’ve seen “there” used for “their” as well. No child left behind is a joke, but education has been a joke for more than a decade…

  • I really wish people would quit referring all this information to how it resonates with Fox noise watchers etc. This 27% of America is stupid and ignorant. They don’t learn, they don’t want to learn, they ignore the truth even with irrefutable evidence basing all knowledge on their opinions which they got from which ever Authoritarian personality they follow. They are racist, bigoted and just plain offensive.

There is not now or ever will be any hope for them to become a part of a progressive society. There will always be that 27% in any society that are just beyond hope that can be manipulated by emotional appeals.

That said, people have to be motivated to learn another language. Europeans are more motivated because of increased daily contact with other language speaking entities. In areas of America where there is an increase in the amount of Spanish speaking people more residents will learn to speak Spanish. If our teachers were all bilingual and used it in class at an early age then more of our residents would become bilingual.

Insisting on English only does not motivate people to become bi-lingual.

  • Learning another language is not about the other language but to learn the often overlooked truth that 80% of the world’d population don’t talk like you in the sam language, don’t think like you and their cultures are all very different from yours. It is this realization and empathy that is not a nice-to-have but a necessity for survival in the 21st Century. The U,.S and Great Britain are not the center of the world anymore. The next billion consumers are coming from other countries like India, China, Brazil, Latin America and other Asian countries. The next billion after that will come from Africa and the left over countries elsewhere. If you care about your Financial Security in 2050 you better pay attention to other countries, languages and cultures!

  • We are falling behind the rest of the world by not teaching other languages in our schools, having lived in many other countries I am impressed by the children who learn several languages by the age of 5 or 6 in nursery school. When tourists from the US came to visit, as many do in France and Luxembourg they try to get their point across to the people there by speaking in English, but very loudly – as though the other people are deaf or stupid. In Luxembourg especially, the people, who were very kind and patient – seeing the difficulty Americans were having, would translate for them. I have seen children, in supermarkets politely ask visitors if they could help. and to convey the wishes of the Americans to the store owners.I was very impressed by the wonderful manners of the children there too.

  • Our culture is so much more interesting than anyone else’s, that everyone else wants to speak “American”.

  • I would love to see the schools teach our children other languages, starting
in grade school. As one person say, we expect everyone to speak
English but do not learn their language.
Am not talking about immigrants. Am stating how beneficial it would be
to know other languages. I wish I had learned at least one other.
We are global, folks. Let our kids have the benefits they deserve and needc.

  • As one of those “funny-looking strangers,” I came to this country from Europe and–get this–started teaching English at the college level. Because Americans speaking only one language, that’s a running gag in Europe, too–until we discovered that that thing with English (especially grammar and spelling)? Not necessarily true, either. Yes, so, feel free to call me a snobbish German, but Obama’s just trying to make sure America catches up with the rest of the world. And that would be a good thing (yes, it’s a-ok to start a sentence with “and”).

  • Perhaps Obama has forgot that this is America? The majority of citizens and legal residents speak the language of the Pilgrims. The judicial system was based on English common law. Senator Obama has just alienated himself from millions of the population, who consider themselves American. He has just made a dangerous mistake to his run for the presidency, to insinuate our children should learn to speak the SPANISH language.

Newcomers, who come to this nation legally strive to speak English. This is a disturbing revelation that is against our sovereignty, our national patriotism and our United States Constitution. If anything we should learn French, because it was the French who came to our aid, when fighting against British tyranny in 1776. Not Mexico, Not Spain. How dare this Senator imply our own children should be bilingual in Mexican/Spanish. For Obamas ignorance towards our history, patriots need to read between the lines. Democrats, Republicans and Independents alike better force a vote on the federal SAVE ACT (H.R.4088) In November it may be too late.NUMBERSUSA for facts

  • “Whoa. Reporting live from the United Kingdom, I have been assured that the typical Brit does not speak many (i.e., any) languages other than English and a smattering of American. — Tom Maguire, as reported by CB

Absolutely correct, or, at least, used to be. Back at the U (Warsaw, Poland), we were taught Brit Eng as the “standard” and Am Eng as the “substandard dialect” — almost another language (in highschool, we were downgraded for using either American vocabulary or pronunciation). To this day, I tend to snort with amusement, whenever I hear some bonehead insist that US should be “English only”. First, learn to use your English properly yourself, arsehole.

The trouble is, of course, that English — and all the versions thereof, including South African, Canadian and Australian on top of Brit and US– has become the modern “lingua franca” (now here’s a joke waiting to be developed!), making learning another language less pressing. It’s a bit like “Latin” (and I use quotation marks advisedly) had been in Europe in the Middle Ages. German “Latin” and English “Latin” and Polish “Latin” were far from identical but everyone with any pretense to education spoke some version of it and it was enough to communicate. French took that role over later on and now it’s the turn of English. So, there’s very little motivation for an American — other than personal curiosity and a wish to broaden one’s horizons with insights into other cultures and other ways of thinking (as Nari Kannan pointed out, @41) — to learn a foreign language.

BTW. Obama is absolutely right that learning a foreign language should start very, very early. Unless you have a perfect pitch, at around 5, your ear begins to exclude unfamiliar sounds — you no longer hear them, which makes imitating them *perfectly* difficult, if not impossible. My written English is very good; my spoken English — the “Vistula English”, with an overlay of the Brit (Received Pronunciation) English and a solid admixture of “redneck Virginia” English — is, most often, described as “cute”. I started learning it at 8 — 50 years ago.

At the same time… Those Americans who go to France with only “merci beaucoup” in their linguistic quiver need not be ashamed of themselves; most French speakers (even the Canadian ones, whose French is ridiculed by the “real” French speakers, much as American-English is by the Brits) make it a point of honour not to learn foreign languages *and* to not understand you when you mangle theirs (Italians are much more accommodating in that respect; I spent a summer there, using my “barely-C-level, classical Latin, Polish version” to communicate and everyone seemed to be very happy that I at least made an effort) . So Obama was wrong there 🙂

  • ringrid @ 34: “As a former public school teacher I’m appalled at the spelling and grammatical errors I notice in high school graduate’s letters.”

Then, for the love of all that is holy and pedantic, please add a comma after “teacher” and place the apostrophe in “graduate’s” after the ‘s’! 😉

Sorry, I couldn’t resist. I am cursed with Proofreader’s Eye, but I don’t generally comment on people’s orthography unless they are criticizing someone else’s. Public education truly has gone to hell, but I think spelling mistakes are the least of our worries. Another great argument for learning Spanish, though: at least someone has a sensible spelling system!

  • old joke:

Q– if someone who speaks two languages is “bilingual,” and someone who speaks more than two languages is “multilingual,” what do you call someone who only speaks one language?

    A– an american.

  • What about ebonics… I thought that was a second language……thats what yall were crying a few years ago.. the language of the ghetto… holycrapbatman….maybe your boy obamma can get that through the system as an other language in the schools.. “I be smart and shit my man”… if you wish to respond to this post please press number one #1 for english …..
    Bubba said that….

  • As today’s youth grows up, Chinese and Spanish will become more dominant as China and various Spanish speaking country’s economies mature.

What’s going to happen is that Chinglish and other dialects of English will be used in various parts of the world, with more or less capability to transfer between them. Formal received English – using ANGLO spellings – will be the written and “high” language. American English will be just another dialect, albeit an extremely important one.

  • I put my eldest daughter in a Spanish immersion program beginning in first grade, and ending in third grade. She is 28 now, and still speaks fluent Spanish. Here in Northern California she had plenty of opportunity to use her Spanish.

My sister spent her first 3 grades in German public schools (we were stationed in Germany with the Army, but the Army school sucked). Her German is still fluent 50 yrs later. I was in 6th-8th, and have mostly lost mine even though I took 2 years of college German. I also took Latin beginning in German school, then 4 years of High School Latin. I think that once you learn one foreign language, others are easier to learn, and that includes languages in a different “family” from your first and second languages. But the earlier you start, the more success you are likely to have.

  • bubba how you been, you ol’ cuss? I see you stirring up shit again but what the hey, I missed your redneck ass! Plus you got your wish; all the kiddies here done gone gaga over your man pal, Mac.

Now can I borrow some gas money?

  • The global economy is DEAD! The idea of turning everyone into capitalists was it’s downfall. The world (and the US economy) was better off when 30% of the world was Marxist and the other 30% was playing with sticks. Now they have to buy imported sticks.

  • Always nice to notice how many of these morons have Irish surnames – like they’ve forgotten “Dogs and Irish keep off the grass.”

But all stereotypes have some basis in reality, so look on these guys as the proof of where the English slurs against the Irish came from (the ancestors of these idiots).

There’s nothing more embarassing to an intelligent irishman to see a rockheaded mick in action.

  • I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: conservatives really are opening themselves up to being slammed as “sissies” and “scaredy-cats”. Now they’re chicken to even try to learn a different language.

    Sheesh.

  • The problem with American public-school language instruction is that it usually starts in high school. As Obama points out, it’s very difficult to learn a language at that age.

  • jimBOB said: Well, if we required people to learn a second language, where would that leave all the home schoolers?

As most here know, I homeschool my kids—one due to a medical condition that necessitates his being outside a traditional school environment, the second because the “25-for-25” public school program in out locale is only 25-for-25 because the school fills out its own “report card” and THEN sends it in to the State for “certification”—and the third is only 3, but she’ll follow the same route as the second, for the same reason.

My oldest—who starts 5th grade in a little more than a month (except for Math; he’s already a year ahead in that) will begin an elementary-school-level French program (courtesy of his dad—that’s me). His two sisters will follow suit in due course.

As for the “tongue-speakers”—no, they don’t count; they tend to give homeschooling a very bad name to begin with, and I avoid them like those “biblical plague-thingies” that they’re always mumbling about between their hellfire/Prozac-induced, chick-tract cocktails….

  • if, as mccain suggests, we spend another 100 years in iraq, shouldn’t our schoolchildren be learning arabic as a second language?

  • Glenn Reynolds: “Barack Obama: Europeans are cooler than Americans.”

well, within context, that statement would be true.

  • I can see where it might be so much more advantageous and businesslike to say “Renegociaremos unilateral el tratado del NAFTA que apesta,” than “We don’t need no stinkin’ NAFTA.”

  • I must confess, as someone born in England, who came to this country at the age of 21, I did feel that I needed a translator at times, people did not understand me and I certainly did not understand them. Seriously though, I feel that the official language (being english) is a good thing, but that does not mean that we should not teach other languages in our schools, we are living in a very different world from 40 years ago and there are a lot of opportunities in other countries for our children and if the dollar ever becomes worth anything again, who knows we may begin to travel again.

  • MsMuddled..ive been doing good.. just got back from a truckin trip… wow…. cost me buck and two bits a mile to run… damn.. if only your liberal buddies in congress can do something about the fuel.. man they have sure messed things up… im fraid I wont be able to run my truck anymore.. gettin more nervous than a long tailed cat in a room full of rockin chairs….seriously if y’all could quit caring about a few seals and owls and see the light we could drill some holes and get some good ole USA oil out of the ground.. anyway…. I can loan you a few bucks for gas if you come over and help me wash my truck… good to hear your voice again….anyway thats off the subject here…guess we are supposed to be talkin about talkin …. I only one language and thats American.. however I likes two kinds of music… country and western ….bubba said that

  • Joey, perhaps you should concentrate on your first language before you attempt another. Your word usage is a problem. May I recommend Webster? It comes in a pocket version and can be accessed via your computer. You should also dip into your middle school grammar book and review the chapters on pronouns, run-on sentences and punctuating complex sentences. Additionally, generalizations are illogical and the use thereof indicate underdeveloped critical thinking skills. Finally, impugning someone’s motives requires a bit more evidence, unless, of course, you are a psychic or mind-reader.

  • Obama let his guard down again, ut-oh, don’t let the people know how big a liberal snob you are just yet.
You know Kerry loved the French too. how is his presidency going??

  • I think it’s a great idea to learn another language! Some Democrats need to learn the language of Money. Maybe then Conservative Republican taxpayers would not have to bail out the mortgage mess of people like you who live above their means. So now, you liberal Demoroids want the government to bail your dumb ass out. Hey, I think I will go buy a house I cannot afford to pay for and then play stupid and say I did not understand the contract I was signing so all you Demoroids can buy me a 5000 square foot house for $675,000.00. Maybe if you Liberal Demoroids learned how to READ English you would understand the contracts you are signing.

  • Here in Louisiana recently, the girl who took top academic honors in her graduating class at her high school, is Vietnamese. When she gave her speech during the graduation ceremony, she spoke ONE sentence in Vietnamese to her family , thanking them for all their encouragement. My, my you should have heard the outrageous comments in the Letters to the Editor in the local newspaper. How dare she speak Vietnamese during her graduation speech! The wingers were just apoplectic that she spoke that one sentence to her family in their native tongue. I sure hope that superb young girl goes to college, learns many languages and moves far away from Louisiana. The willful ignorance in this country is just astounding……and shameful.

    Audie,

I think you need to go back to church! I have never stepped foot in a church and even I know that the bible was written in LATIN! English was not even a language 2008 years ago! And you have the nerve to come in here…… damn funny though

  • Not having grown up in America I am very puzzled by the people who write believing it’s somehow ‘wrong’ to know more than one language. I agree that in America – because of its geography – it hasn’t been essential to learn another language. And although it won’t guarantee you a job in the global marketplace knowing another language will certainly help open some doors. The post from the person in Louisiana about the Vietnamese girl and the reaction her one sentence of Vietnamese got really made my skin crawl. I guess if you don’t conform 100% and want to learn more and do more and feed your curiosity and broaden your knowledge that’s just un-American to some people. And whoever mentioned that Britain is not part of Europe is absolutely right. Although many people in Britain who had the advantage of a higher education do speak French … and it is changing.

For goodness sake give your children opportunity. Let them learn more and be more. Don’t sabotage them by imposing restrictions on their education that are just a product of your bigotry.
By the way my Texan is getting pretty good and I’m older than Barack Obama. My native language is Australian English and I speak German, some French, some Italian, some Dutch and am learning Spanish. It is way easier to learn when you’re much younger, but it’s still possible!

  • In the USA, he narrow mind is very dependent on television for his/her knowledge and pre-packaged point of view. It requires curiosity and some imagination to expand one’s knowledge, appreciate new ideas and move forward in business and culture. Unfortunately, the narrow mind is too lazy and often boring with almost no ability to think straight…that is, to think critically…with the ability to connect the dots. It’s not at all surprising that there were only 7 Arabic speakers in the first wave of troops that invaded and occupied Iraq…resulting in thousands of innocent Iraqi’s being killed by fearful and ignorant soldiers. Basic Arabic should have been an essential element of training, but it wasn’t, thanks to folks like Cheney and Bush and the Fox News mentality of Pentagon planners.

  • Obama did not say that children should learn a froeign language. He said that American children should have to learn SPANISH. If the DailyKos is going to lie then it should be sure that they kill all the people who are smart enough and informed enough to know that the people at that disgusting and supercilious site are aware of it.

I think that learning a froeign language is great. I have studied and learned French, spanish and Russian and little ancient Greek. What Obama was saying was that Spanish in particular shold be the language that American children should have ot learn. The corrlolary to his remarks is that the US should become a bi-lingual nation which is something that I absolutely oppose. Having said that, I have to admit that to a great extent this nation is, if not officially, then unofficially a bilingual nation. When you call any federal agency you are asked to hit a button for English or Spanish. The same phenomenon exists on th state and local levels around the country. In California, a citizen can vote in any of several languages. I happen to believe that ballots should only be in one language — English. Ideally, all government business should be done in English only. But for practical, not to mention, humanitarian reasons, access requires the use of other languages.

Not only did the DailyKos misrepresent the substance and the spirit of Obama’s absurd and officious comment, it also implicitly celebrated the idea of an officially multi-lingual society. Accommodating non-English speakers at hospitals and in some business with the government is one thing. Inviting the balcanization of this nation by the sanctioning of the official use of first one additional tongue and then who knows how many others is not only bad policy, it is an invitation to a rift in the cohesion of this vast country.

I reckon that the DailyKos is way too sophisticated and intelligent to take seriously the negative ramifications that will develop if first Spanish and then other languages become officially acceptable. However, the fact is that there are actually very few things that maintain the cohesion of our nation. The common belief in the principles of the national Consititution is one. A shared sense of history is another. And a common language is yet another. It is my understanding that a basic knowledge of English is necessary for anyone who takes the citizenship exams. However, in everyday life, even among those who become citizens, there are probably many who use another language in everyday life; perhaps older ones for whom it is hard to learn another tongue.

My criticism of Obama is his completely cavalier and seemingly thoughtlessness in regard to his statement about the necessity for Americans to learn, not “another language” as the DailyKos would have its readers believe that Obama said, but that Spanish, specifically Spanish must be learned by the next generation of Americans. If that is not an endorsement for making that language on equal footing with English, then I do not know what is.But I do! Frankly, this little faux pas on the issue of the place of spanish in the public arena in the US is typical of teh difficulty that Obama has in thinking clearly and/or thoroughly about issues that he appears to believe are “no brainers”, but one the bolow back starts to kick in he quickly realizes the mistake he has made by not at least vetting his off the cuff ideas with his political staff.

I must say, however, that these kinds of from the hip comments are good because they tends to show Obama for what he really is — an extremely leftwing liberal who will deep six the nation even more severely than did Jimmy Carter did, in the unlikely event that he is elected.

Having made these unkind comments I will quickly add that there are actually some things about Obama that I like. In some respects, I think that an Obama presidency will make this country much more popular in the world at large. I have grave concerns about Israel and the whole Middle east conundrum. And I have doubts about Obama on foreign policy in general because of his extremely limited knowledge and experience on that stage. On domestic policy I am split between the two but tend toward the Democrat on some issues.

  • In regard to the language the the Bible was written in, I think that boe captfoster and Audie are mistaken. The Old Testament was written down in Hebrew. The Christian or new Testament Bible was, I believe, written in Greek but then translated later on in what was referred to as the vulgate, or the language of every day people which for a long time was Latin. I am not sure what place Aramaic had in the writing of these books. I believe that Jesus spoke this language as his primary tongue. He probably also spke Hebrew and possibly Latin.

By the tenth century, the Romance languages that we know as French, Spanish,Portuguese and Italian had evolved from their Latin roots and were full fledged and separate languages. I do not know when the Bible was first translated from Latin into one of these or into English and German, but the process was well on its way by the Renaissance.

I thought what Audie said about the fact that English was not even a language at the time of its first writing was a hoot. It reminds me of the joke about Ronald Reagan who appocriphally complained about the Polish prime minister who spoke Polish and not the “regular” language. I think this is all in the vein of the phenomenon of a person who is confronted by a foreigner who cannot speak your language. what do you do? The answer is simple; you just speak louder. If they still can’t understand, you speak louder and louder until you are screaming at them. Finally, if they do not understand, you either arrest them or shoot them

In regard to Obama’s desire to see all of God’s American children speak Spanish, I have only won word to say: Esperanto. We should nhot be bothering to have our children leanr another foreign language. we should have them all forget how to speak English and what eveer other disgusting means of communication they were unfortunate enough to have had to learn, and then be made to take craxh courses in this international, made-up language. Within a matter of days, every American child should be fluent in Esperanto. And, with US military predominance, we should be able to impose the learning of it on every person in every nation on the planet.

It is better that sooner rather than later, that the rest of the world learns that it is better to give in to the wishes of America than have to face the wrath of this mighty and righteous nation.

  • Here is the list of languages that every American child must learn and be fluent in by the end of high school:SPNAISH,FRENCH, ITALIAN, JAPANESE.RUSSIAN, MANDARIN CHINESE, FARSI, HINDI, LATIN, ANCIENT GREEK MODERN GREEK, ARAMAIC, ARABIC, TAGALOG, AND THREE LANGUGES OF THEIR CHOICE.I forgot German, and of course, English.

Obama is correct. We are way to provincial. Every American should be able to go up to anyone on the surface of the globe and say,”HOWDY DO”, in thier tongue. It is the bland ond boring man and child who can utter his thoughts in but one language.

Jim, Your right…… my bad. But it was certainly a closer guess than Audie’s… at least Latin existed back then… English did not exist until 900 years ago??

  • Someone asked what happened to college and high school requirements for foreign languages?

I had to take 2 years of foreign language to graduate from high school, and an extra year, 3 for those that are counting, to get into college. The state that I grew up in still requires 2 years for high school and 3 years for college entrance.

Unfortunatly I never used it since. Its too bad because it could have helped me recently.

The old addage: if you don’t use it you lose it does apply to language.

  • Sounds like Obama needs to learn to speak English before he tells us “we’s” need to learn a second language.

  • This is a bit ridiculous. What Obama is saying is true. Europeans are taught more languages in school. That is a fact. IN England and Ireland (both English speaking countries) children have taken at least 2 other languages by the time they hit the equivalent of High School. IN America you can avoid taking a language altogether if you don’t plan on going to college.
AND it’s true, learning another language makes you more marketable, etc.
However I do believe that immigrants to America should learn English and that a certain level of proficiency in English should be a part of becoming a citizen. I notice that in many situations the children of immigrants learn English while their parents don’t. It must be very isolating to live in a country and not be able to speak the language.

  • Man i just got my hooked on ebonics tapes. I can’t wait to start learning a new language. BTW why was obama speaking in english to the germans. He don’t know french nor german but he wants everybody else to learn a new language.

  • Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the language of the old Testament is closer to Aramaic than any modern language. Hebrew, Greek and Latin versions were all translations that came later…
