Obama weathers Wright storm, rebounds in NYT/CBS poll

Last week, an NBC/WSJ poll found that voters are far more concerned with John McCain’s closeness with George W. Bush than Barack Obama’s closeness with Jeremiah Wright, despite the media emphasis on the latter instead of the prior.

With that in mind, perhaps the results of the new NYT/CBS poll shouldn’t be too surprising.

A majority of American voters say that the furor over the relationship between Senator Barack Obama and his former pastor has not affected their opinion of Mr. Obama, but a substantial number say that it could influence voters this fall should he be the Democratic presidential nominee, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll. […]

The poll, conducted after Mr. Obama held a news conference on Tuesday in which he renounced his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., for making incendiary comments, found that most Americans said they approved of the way Mr. Obama had responded to the episode and considered his criticism of Mr. Wright appropriate.

Among Dems nationally, Obama rebounded a bit, and now leads Clinton 50% to 38%. Both Obama and Clinton lead John McCain in general-election match-ups, by similar margins (Clinton is ahead by 12 points, Obama by 11).

These results come with a few caveats. First, the Democratic sample was pretty small nationally. Second, voters approve of the way Obama handled the Wright controversy, but nevertheless believe Obama’s denunciation was more politically convenient than sincere. Third, while less than a fourth of Americans say they care about the Wright story, 44% said they believe most people they know will be influenced by the controversy.

And perhaps most importantly, while Obama appears to have weathered the storm, the damage is quite evident — in February, Obama led Clinton by nearly 30 points on who was the stronger Dem for November. Now, the two are essentially tied.

Voters, meanwhile, are far from impressed with the media.

A clear majority of Americans 56% said news outlets had spent too much time covering the Wright story (imagine that). Kevin Drum, meanwhile, found an interesting tidbit while going through the results:

* Compared to the way the news media have treated other candidates, have the news media been harder on Hillary Clinton, easier on Hillary Clinton, or have they treated her the same as other candidates?

Harder 36%, Easier 12%, Same 49%, DK/NA 3%

* Compared to the way the news media have treated other candidates, have the news media been harder on Barack Obama, easier on Barack Obama, or have they treated him the same as other candidates?

Harder 27%, Easier 22%, Same 48%, DK/NA 3%

* Compared to the way the news media have treated other candidates, have the news media been harder on John McCain, easier on John McCain, or have they treated him the same as other candidates?

Harder 11%, Easier 28%, Same 56%, DK/NA 5%

You’ll notice, of course, that McCain’s “easier” number trumps the Dems’ pretty easily. (I’m tempted to follow the H.W. Bush example in ’92 and print up bumper stickers that read, “Annoy the Media: Vote Democratic.”)

As for the “gas-tax holiday” being promoted by McCain and Clinton, voters seem to be sharper than I expected on this. A 49% plurality of all voters said the proposal is a bad idea, and among Dems, a 52% majority rejects the proposal. Similarly, a whopping 70% majority of voters overall said candidates pushing the idea were doing so to score political points, not because they think it’s a good policy.

Of course, whether voters in Indiana and North Carolina feel this way remains to be seen.

Update: As it turns out, if you don’t like the results of the NYT/CBS poll, the latest USA Today/Gallup poll offers nearly the opposite results, showing Clinton surging ahead and claiming the national lead over Obama, 51% to 44%.

And if you don’t like those numbers, the Gallup Daily Tracking poll shows Obama rebounding and claiming a four-point lead, after trailing by four late last week.

“Annoy the Media: Vote Democratic.”

I admire you for, among many other things, knowing the difference between a noun and an adjective.

  • a whopping 70% majority of voters overall said candidates pushing the idea were doing so to score political points, not because they think it’s a good policy.

Voters, especially women, are not blind, and they can clearly see the outrageously harsh treatment Senator Clinton is receiving from the so-called “experts” on her gas tax holiday plan. Women are not fooled — they know the economists are criticizing her plan not for economic reasons, but simply to try to bring her down. It’s no surprise that voters are responding to the economists’ totally political move with another political move. That’s just good politics, and if Mr. Fainting Flower can’t stand the heat, he should get out of the kitchen.

  • Maria, hard-core Republicans are the people who know the least about the difference between a noun and an adjective – especially if the word begins with a “D.”

Of course there are many, many other things that they don’t know.

  • Oke, I know, but I’ve noticed to my sadness that an increasing number of Dems are saying “Vote Democrat” lately, even as they correctly eschew the Republican phrase “Democrat party.”

  • The media’s starting to wake up to how Wright’s a dead horse. CNN’s John Roberts interviewed Obama this morning and declared it a “Wright-free zone” because their viewers had been complaining so much about their excessive coverage of the nonsense.

  • As a life-long Democrat and an off-the-wall loather of the Republican usage of “Democrat Party”, I can’t get really upset if someone uses “Vote Democrat” instead of “Vote Democratic”. I sometimes use the first term, and my intentions are always pure.

  • I think the Wright controversy just gives a “race neutral” way for racists to vote against Obama. They were never going to vote for him, but don’t feel comfortable saying so. The Wright controversy just gives them an excuse. Unfortunately, the Rebublicans know this, which is why they ar blowing this dog whistle so loudley.

  • Exlitigator,

I agree with what you have to say. It is disheartening to see USA Gallup poll showing Clinton +7, since she is running more a like a Republican.

  • Why do you think racists need an excuse to be racist? The only people who worry about being racist are people who are not racist but worried other people will think they are. Racists are unapologetic about their feelings.

The Wright controversy worries some people who are not racists because it casts doubt on Obama’s judgment and his ability to make tough decisions. He was too slow abandoning Wright. He lied about his knowledge of Wright’s opinions. He tried to support Wright without really supporting him — trying to have his cake and eat it too, something that pleased no one much. He dithered and was finally forced to disavow Wright. None of that demonstrates much leadership ability. It is what a people-pleaser does, someone who cannot stand having anyone think badly of him. Put a guy like that in a position where he must choose who to alienate and he becomes immobilized trying to keep everyone’s approval, as Obama did.

My favorite Wrightism is his statement that African American and white children learn differently, using different hemispheres of their brains. That idea rests on long-discredited pop psychology, but what amused me most was that he had the hemispheric specializations reversed. It was especially fun watching all of you claim that Wright speaks the truth. Very funny!

  • I think it’s funny how CBS has a different perspective on that exact same poll:

Among Democratic primary voters (those who have voted or plan to vote in a Democratic primary) Obama’s lead over Clinton has increased — he now leads Clinton by twelve points, 50 percent to 38 percent. That’s up from his eight point lead in the poll released just a few days ago. However, among all registered voters who identify themselves as Democrats (regardless of whether they have voted or plan to vote in a Democratic primary) Obama and Clinton are virtually tied — 45 percent for Clinton and 44 percent for Obama. This is similar to the numbers earlier in the week.

Why would the NYT neglect to mention this fact? Why put emphasis on democratic voters likely to vote or have already voted in the primaries instead of democratic voters who plan to vote in November?

Maybe they should neglect to mention any opinions of voters in FL & MI too, that seems to be acceptable.

  • Mary,

In terms of determining judgment, I would not put Wright on the same level as Iraq. However, in light of what happened at the National Press Club,Obama looked foolish for defending Wright.

  • I find it refreshing that voters are rejecting the sort of guilt-by-association politics that the GOP has routinely engaged in for years. Evidently Obama’s handling of the Wright matter has worked well enough for him, and maybe we’ll see more evidence of that tomorrow.

  • a whopping 70% majority of voters overall said candidates pushing the idea were doing so to score political points, not because they think it’s a good policy.

Of course, whether voters in Indiana and North Carolina feel this way remains to be seen.

That is encouraging. If the people see that they’re being screwed (again) by the political class, we might have a prayer of getting a serious government yet. And the people who are dumb enough to fall for the Clinton/McCain pander are probably the ones who are looking for any excuse to vote against the black guy. We probably didn’t have a shot at them anyway.

  • I think you are too sanguine on the Wright polling. The more useful number concerns what the polled think others will do. Around 40% think others will be affected by the Wright discussion; that is strong evidence that it has had a serious negative effect on Obama’s campaign. Self-reporting on race or sex related issues is quite unreliable. Polling on expectations re others often is more reliable indicator.

  • What would it mean for Obama not to have “weathered the storm” under your criteria? Would he have to have quit the race? That bar seems to be set a bit low. Immediately after the whole Wright issue hit the scene, Obama kept urging us to put this behind us and focus on the issues. This strikes me as another attempt to get people to move on from an issue that continues to be an embarrassment to him. I doubt McCain will let this die and there is no reason why Clinton should either, since it is a legitimate issue. When the polls show that people are still concerned with an issue, that means Obama must be concerned with it too, which means he has not yet weathered anything.

  • Of course those who have so much to gain from this will keep on pounding Wright. What Obama needs to do is to throw this back in the their faces by focusing on Republican incompetence and what they have done for this country lately. When you compare Wright to Republican incompetence I think the latter bears more blame as to what is going on in this country. It is funny how Clinton supporters get more animated about Wright than they are about Republican incompetence.

  • Too bad, Mary – your kind ofd stupidity isn’t just rejected here, it’s rejected by actual voters. You and your gaggle of self-entitled boomer bimbos, led by the Empress, are on the way out.

  • It is funny how Clinton supporters get more animated about Wright than they are about Republican incompetence.

What you call “Republican incompetence” happens to be many of Senator Clinton’s policy positions, which may not have worked under Bush but will succeed if approached correctly by someone with Clinton’s brains, talent and skills. Of course no one, particularly male voters, will give her credit for her ability to do so.

You may think Clinton supporters will forget your ugly confluence of Clinton with Republicans, but I assure you that we will not, and we are not going to reward this viciousness by voting for Mr. Big Mouth just because he likes to brag about his traditionally Democratic positions, whoop de doo. If we have to have McCain for four or eight years, so be it. It’s more important in the long run to teach a lesson to Obama supporters.

  • Mary is having an anti-catholic pastor Hagee an issue for McCain. Is Jerry Falwell an issue for McCain. These ministers and other right-wingers have made similar outrageous remarks about the US and AIDS, Gays and Katrina.

Jerry Falwell “…and with biological warfare available to these monsters – the Husseins, the Bin Ladens, the Arafats – what we saw on Tuesday, as terrible as it is, could be miniscule if, in fact – God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve.

PAT ROBERTSON: Jerry, that’s my feeling. I think we’ve just seen the antechamber to terror. We haven’t even begun to see what they can do to the major population.

They have endorsed Senator McCain. I don’t see that this is only the beginning on demonic attacks on Senator Obama. First the Senator was a Islamic terrorist Moslem. Now he is attached at the hip to a Black Christian .Minister, who some in America think is the Anti-Christ.

None of this matter, as Reverend Wright is not running for President. And if his views are tied to Senator Obama., the same goes for Senator McCain who has sought out the Christian Right Wing

  • My sentiments exactly abigbman.

Also, Hillary is not really attacking Obama on the wright situation. Why? Because she has ties with Rev. Wright as well. You see guys, Hillary has alot of baggage that has not been brought the front yet. For this reason, Republicans are attacking Obama to attempt to get him out the race. They can easily take care of Hillary in the primaries, they know everything about her. They even have stuff on her from her time as the first wife. They have years and years of baggage on Clinton. However, with Obama, he has a vastly diferent following with little baggage. The closests they can get to him is to attack him on something someone else said. One of my first/mandatory classes in undergrad was “critical thinking”. This taught us how to read these Polls, these stories, etc to see how the manipulate action amongst its readers. Even if the action is based on uneducated false reported information. These polls mean nothing and contradict each other. Just vote for who you want people but critically think about your actions.

  • Well, I am writing from Europe. I am not American, I do not vote. Just to set the case clear. I am considering how divisive are getting the democratic primaries, considering that in this funny game (seen from here) Clinton has nothing to lose (after all she is playing with your money). She will probably still lose the primaries, but will have done such a damage that Obama may not manage to beat McCain (none of you does really believe Clinton will help in November, right?, naive you are but there is a limit. They did not campaign for Kerry, remember?). Clinton will claim that she was more eligible, and she will run in 2012. Meanwhile you will have another disastrous 4 years government, the rest of the world will have registered that if you get upset you may “obliterate” Iran, like the good old cowboys you remained, and that for Americans “having balls” is an elegant way of expressing someone who is willing to fight a lost battle with someone else’s money and at someone else’s costs for her own advantage. Congratulations!!!!
And my compliment to Howard Dean, who not knowing what else to do, is going on TV smiling and laughing as if he ignores they are straight going to lose this elections with all the Clinton’s negativity and her cheap demagogy (she should force oil company to reduce gas price, not taking money out of your pockets (American, taxes are your money!!!!)).
Meanwhile the world is watching and a big part spurns you. Go ahead this way!!!

  • One small remark: four years ago my company sent me to Detroit on business trip. Now I am flying to Bangalore.

And few months ago Ford sold Jaguar to Tata (from India).

Just to set the case clear.

Congratulations to the two dinasties you are still voting!!!!
Vote Clinton: with many thanks from Europe, China and India 🙂

  • abigbman: Mary is having an anti-catholic pastor Hagee an issue for McCain. Is Jerry Falwell an issue for McCain. These ministers and other right-wingers have made similar outrageous remarks about the US and AIDS, Gays and Katrina.

Cue crickets… funny that Mary, Greg et. al. show up at the same time, spout unidirectional rhetoric that would make any Republican proud, then disappear until they’re paid again to pollute the place (at least, I hope for their sake their being paid).

  • abigbman — McCain didn’t attend Hagee’s church for 20 years, didn’t consider him a mentor, didn’t have the man baptize his kids. That is the main difference. Obama has to explain why he put up with a fruitcake as his spiritual advisor. McCain just has to explain why he lets fruitcakes support his campaign.

About the crickets…I work for a living. I can’t sit here all day waiting breathlessly for Maria to say something funny (“big old syphilitic-looking nose”?!?). Where are all of you in the morning when I am around? Sleeping in or sleeping it off?

  • Here are Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell explaining to us all how 9-11 was what we deserved. It was in part – God’s retribution against Feminists and the ACLU. (God is apparently against equal pay for equal work.)

Here is Pat Robertson calling for the assassination of the elected leader of Venuzuela – you can elect who you want – but if we don’t like ‘em we kill ‘em.

John Hagee is a Texas Megachurch minister whose endorsement McCain actively sought. Here he explains about how the Catholic Church – “The Great Whore” – drinks the blood of the jews. Apparently McCain did not bring this up during recent Papal visit.

Rod Parsley, the man McCain calls a spiritual advisor, compares Planned Parenthood to the Nazis Some Jewish folks might beg to differ..

Where is the coverage of these nutbags?

  • then disappear until they’re paid again to pollute the place (at least, I hope for their sake their being paid).

It seems unlikely that Camp Clinton would pay for such poor quality, until you remember Penn, Solis, Ickes, Wolfson, Garin…and of course Clinton could just be planning on stiffing these trolls like she does so many other little “working class” vendors.

  • Mary: McCain didn’t attend Hagee’s church for 20 years, didn’t consider him a mentor, didn’t have the man baptize his kids.

So… you’re saying that it would be perfectly okay for Obama to accept Reverend Wright’s endorsement… as long as he had no personal affiliation with him?

Let’s see, one is a clear statement of your political leanings, the other means you went to some church and half listened to some nut ramble on about talking snakes and burning bushes. Sounds like a lot of folks I know.

Personally, I would rather think Obama never went to church at all, but that’s out of the question. I guess the best I can hope for is that he went to church every Sunday like most Americans and breathed a sigh of relief when it was over.

Mary: Where are all of you in the morning when I am around? Sleeping in or sleeping it off?

    Uhhh… watering our pot plants?

  • Maria: It seems unlikely that Camp Clinton would pay for such poor quality…

Oh… she doesn’t have to pay for it. These people are Republicans, up one side and down the other.

  • MY FELLOW “BITTER”, STUPID, WORKING CLASS PEOPLE 🙂

If you think like Barack Obama, that WORKING CLASS PEOPLE are just a bunch of “BITTER”!, STUPID, PEASANTS, Cash COWS!, and CANNON FODDER. 🙁

You Might Be An Idiot! 🙂

If you think Barack Obama with little or no experience would be better than Hillary Clinton with 35 years experience.

You Might Be An Idiot! 🙂

If you think that Obama with no experience can fix an economy on the verge of collapse better than Hillary Clinton. Whose 😉 husband (Bill Clinton) led the greatest economic expansion, and prosperity in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot! 🙂

If you think that Obama with no experience fighting for universal health care can get it for you better than Hillary Clinton. Who anticipated this current health care crisis back in 1993, and fought a pitched battle against overwhelming odds to get universal health care for all the American people.

You Might Be An Idiot! 🙂

If you think that Obama with no experience can manage, and get us out of two wars better than Hillary Clinton. Whose 😉 husband (Bill Clinton) went to war only when he was convinced that he absolutely had to. Then completed the mission in record time against a nuclear power. AND DID NOT LOSE THE LIFE OF A SINGLE AMERICAN SOLDIER. NOT ONE!

You Might Be An Idiot! 🙂

If you think that Obama with no experience saving the environment is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose 😉 husband (Bill Clinton) left office with the greatest amount of environmental cleanup, and protections in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot! 🙂

If you think that Obama with little or no education experience is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose 😉 husband (Bill Clinton) made higher education affordable for every American. And created higher job demand and starting salary’s than they had ever been before or since.

You Might Be An Idiot! 🙂

If you think that Obama with no experience will be better than Hillary Clinton who spent 8 years at the right hand of President Bill Clinton. Who is already on record as one of the greatest Presidents in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot! 🙂

If you think that you can change the way Washington works with pretty speeches from Obama, rather than with the experience, and political expertise of two master politicians ON YOUR SIDE like Hillary and Bill Clinton..

You Might Be An Idiot! 🙂

If you think all those Republicans voting for Obama in the Democratic primaries, and caucuses are doing so because they think he is a stronger Democratic candidate than Hillary Clinton. 🙂

    Best regards

    jacksmith… Working Class 🙂

p.s. You Might Be An Idiot! 🙂

If you don’t know that the huge amounts of money funding the Obama campaign to try and defeat Hillary Clinton is coming in from the insurance, and medical industry, that has been ripping you off, and killing you and your children. And denying you, and your loved ones the life saving medical care you needed. All just so they can make more huge immoral profits for them-selves off of your suffering…

You see, back in 1993 Hillary Clinton had the audacity, and nerve to try and get quality, affordable universal health care for everyone to prevent the suffering and needless deaths of hundreds of thousands of you each year. 🙂

Approx. 100,000 of you die each year from medical accidents from a rush to profit by the insurance, and medical industry. Another 120,000 of you die each year from treatable illness that people in other developed countries don’t die from. And I could go on, and on…

OBAMA AIDE: “WORKING-CLASS VOTERS NOT KEY FOR DEMOCRATS” 😮

  • Mary : I know quite a few closet racists who would love to use the Wright thing to cover themselves (I live in a very rural area)… If it wasn’t wright they’d find some other “reason”..
