Official says Giuliani will ‘chase Muslims…back to their caves’

Lately, several presidential candidates have had more trouble with what surrogates say than the candidates themselves. Consider this jaw-dropper from John Deady, the New Hampshire State Co-Chair of Veterans for Rudy.

For those who can’t watch clips online, here’s what the guy says about Giuliani:

“He’s got I believe the knowledge and the judgment to attack one of the most difficult problems in current history and that is the rise of the Muslims, and make no mistake about it, this hasn’t happened for a thousand years. These people are very, very dedicated and they’re also very smart, in their own way. We need to keep the feet to the fire and keep pressing these people until we defeat or chase them back to their caves — or in other words get rid of them.”

Maybe John Deady didn’t get the memo, but Giuliani’s message is supposed to feature implicit anti-Muslim bigotry, not explicitly anti-Muslim bigotry.

For that matter, Giuliani usually says, at least publicly, that he perceives the problem as one of “Islamic fascism” and/or “Islamic terrorism.” When critics note that these phrases unnecessarily connect violent extremists with a specific faith, the campaign’s response is generally, “No, no, we’re not denigrating Islam, just terrorists.”

Except Deady’s insane rant seems to underscore the obvious: Giuliani’s rhetoric is geared towards convincing conservatives that he’ll be “tough” (read: violent) when it comes to Muslims in general.

Greg Sargent explained:

Now, it’s very clear here that this Rudy campaign official, who hasn’t yet returned our call, is talking about the rise of Muslims in general, not about terrorists or Islamofascists or what have you. After all, he says that this problem hasn’t happened “for a thousand years.”

Also note the reference to chasing them “back to their caves,” not to mention the outright call for getting “rid” of them — them being, again, the Muslims.

Any chance the national press will see this as newsworthy?

It’s unlikely — Giuliani is a Republican — but if the campaign is smart, it will ask Deady to step down from his role in the campaign.

You mean President Bush let them out of their caves? Is Rudy running against Dubya now?

  • This guy is just another of the “professional vetrerans” who had one too many down at the American Legion Hall and decided to look tougher than he was during his military career as a professional potato peeler. You look into the military record of most of these American Legion bozos and they got to actual “war” was being run down by a truck while stumbling across the street drunk. Remember, in the American military there are 12 guys “in the rear, with the gear” for every poor sucker actually out on the sharp end.

  • That is some of the scariest rhetoric I have heard in a long time. To lump all Muslims together as terrorists is crazy. And to somehow imply that a thousand years ago they got all upity and we in the Christian west had to put them in their place is grossly unfair, especially when you consider that it was the Europeans who invaded the Middle East during the Crusades, not the other way around. This goes far beyond vague implications into outrageous blatent untruths directed at all Musllims everywhere.

  • Ah, the “Final Solution” to the “Muslim Problem.” I’m sure Peggy Noonan would categorize Deady under her “reasonable but unpalatable” column. Giuliani and his cohort really are worse than Bush.

  • And Rude-Boy’s Freak Show continues. Methinks Deadhead probably has a drug problem like Ravenel [sic?]

These people are very, very dedicated and they’re also very smart, in their own way.

Charming, he even manages to invoke the horror of the ruthlessly cunning swarthy types. I’m surprised he didn’t work in a mention of blood thirsty mooslims raping innocent white virgins on church altars.

    Fucking asshole.

  • Yeah – electing Rudy would really elevate our image in the world, wouldn’t it? Is he working on the little mustache yet? Will the Army get some nice, shiny, calf-length black boots?

Yeah, the world needs more people like this.

  • No, no, we’re not denigrating Islam, just terrorists.

We’re not denigrating Muslims by calling them terrorists, we’re denigrating terrorists by calling them Muslim! See? We’re nice people!

  • Tom Cleaver’s comment inspired me to do a little research on Mr. Deadhead. There isn’t much on him (or there wasn’t until today) but on the list of members J. Deady is listed as a past president of MIANE (Military Intelligence Association of New England). I can’t find much on that either. Apparently it was once a recruiting arm for the CIC and is now a sort of club for members of the intelligence community and their families.

If he ever served at all he doesn’t list his rank or branch. A Ginny Deady is listed as USN.

  • Just substitute the “N” word for Muslims and it makes it even more clear how racist these remarks actually are. He’s not referring to terrorists. First he wants to send ’em back to Africa where they came from…and now he wants to send this bunch back to their caves where they came from…never once realizing it’s where we all came form. He doesn’t see how absurd and ridiculous these comments are especially from someone who considers himself intelligent. He can dismiss them all as long as we get the bottom line…”…or in other words get rid of them.” A diplomat indeed eh?

More closed minded bigots for Guiliani…what a surprise.

  • This is just much more of the same……………”protect us from the bloodlust of islamic terrorism” is what old Pat Robertson said as he shook Rooty’s hand a month or so ago……………….Rooty is done……done …………..I wish people would stop noticing him , let alone worrrying that he may be the Bush republican candidate………………………Any democrat will beat any republican this time…….

  • They’re also very smart, in their own way.

Even in the context of this astonishingly bigoted rant, that quote stands out.

“In their way?” What way? The way a chimpanzee can use a stick to fish termites out of their nest? Look! They can use tools! They’re almost human!

This has to be the most overtly racist rhetoric in any major political campaign in the last half of this century. Even when David Duke ran for governor of Louisiana in the 1990s, his coded language was clever enough to give him deniability. Not terribly plausible deniability, but deniability.

    This is another matter entirely.

  • What Uncommon Sense said. That quote struck me as well; smart “in their own way”, meaning (apparently) smart enough to pose a danger because of their scheming trickery, but naturally not as smart as Americans.

Reminds me of a South African (white) I met once who spent the better part of a rum-soaked evening trying to convince me it was proven medical fact that the average black man’s brain was significantly smaller than that of the average white man. He was otherwise very well-read, charming and good company, and I factored in the probability that he had never visited rural Tennessee or Kentucky.

  • ***Just substitute the “N” word for Muslims***

bjobotts, might I suggest substituting the “J” word instead?

The rhetoric spewed upon the Republic by these wombats is little different than that employed by another “professional veteran’ whilst incarcerated after the Beer Hall Putsch. All you have to do is substitute GOPer for Aryan, Neoconservativism for National Socialism, and “All Persons Not GOP” for Untermenschen.

Being a Muslim is, to these people, no different that being a Jew was to the participants of the Wannsee Conference—and without a shred of doubt, Deady has pushed the envelope to the point of offering “justifications” for the extermination of the Muslim “race.”

And GhoulChild is, in all likelihood, surrounding himself with mentally-imbalanced loyalists such as Deady who would gladly stage an “event” to further justify a modern-day Crystallnacht against Islam.

The Republic—and the whole world, for that matter—can ill afford a Giuliani presidency. If the rhetoric accelerates, neither would be able to afford even a Giuliani nomination….

  • When I first read these comments I kind of chuckled. Sort of like a Polish joke. He can’t be serious. When I finished the story my jaw was completely dropped. The war he wants won’t be fought by anyone in his family. Little Johnny down the lane will be the guy to hold the spear. People like him need to be put in a cage in the park for a week so people can urinate on him and throw tomatoes. This man is no veteran of war. His remarks prove it.

  • And no one is a bigger experpt on what being a REMF and armchair commando is than Cleaver.

  • If any of you people spent most of your life around muslims you would know who they really are to the core and you’d be taking Rudy’s side. Political Correctness will be the death of this great nation. There is a “Muslim Problem” not only in the U.S. but around the world, and they aren’t afraid to show their true colors in those countries where they are the majority (Middle East, Pakistan anyone?) Keep continuing to placate the muslims here they will become the majority and what you saw on the news about a suicide bombing in Iraq or Pakistan you will be seeing right in your own backyard. Problems are just that, problems. They can’t be dealt with using kind words, patronization or hoping they will just go away. They have to be identified for they what they really are and confronted head on.
