O’Reilly amazed by civility in Harlem restaurant

At a minimum, I can’t help but think Bill O’Reilly needs to get out more. He explained the other day, on the air, that he and Al Sharpton had dinner together in Harlem, and O’Reilly was amazed by what he found. Regrettably, he wasn’t talking about the food.

“[W]e went to Sylvia’s, a very famous restaurant in Harlem. I had a great time, and all the people up there are tremendously respectful. They all watch The Factor. You know, when Sharpton and I walked in, it was like a big commotion and everything, but everybody was very nice.

“And I couldn’t get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia’s restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it’s run by blacks, primarily black patronship.

On the same program, O’Reilly was describing his experience to NPR’s Juan Williams. “There wasn’t one person in Sylvia’s who was screaming, ‘M-Fer, I want more iced tea,'” O’Reilly said, adding, “You know, I mean, everybody was — it was like going into an Italian restaurant in an all-white suburb in the sense of people were sitting there, and they were ordering and having fun. And there wasn’t any kind of craziness at all.”

It might not have been quite so offensive if O’Reilly didn’t sound so surprised.

What did O’Reilly expect to find in Harlem? Why does he assume that white people at a suburban Italian restaurant are civilized, but black people in Harlem may be prone to “craziness”?

Put it this way — if O’Reilly had gone to an all-white restaurant, would he have found it worth noting on the air that none of the patrons were screaming, “M-Fer, I want more iced tea”? I suspect not. Call it a hunch.

There’s also the broader context. If O’Reilly had never uttered racially insensitive remarks on the air before, one might be more inclined to find a more forgiving interpretation of these remarks. But Media Matters noted some of the Fox News blowhard’s recent tirades on race.

* On the June 7 edition of The O’Reilly Factor, O’Reilly said of Edwin Roy Hall — the man charged with murdering 18-year-old Kelsey Smith after abducting her from the parking lot of a Target store in Overland Park, Kansas: “[T]his guy who is charged has a child and a wife. You know, he’s like white-bread guy. And we’re all going, ‘What is that?’ ”

* On the August 16, 2006, edition of The O’Reilly Factor, O’Reilly argued extensively for “profiling of Muslims” at airports, arguing that detaining all “Muslims between the ages of 16 and 45” for questioning “isn’t racial profiling,” but “criminal profiling.”

* During the April 12, 2006, broadcast of The Radio Factor, O’Reilly claimed that on the April 11 edition of The O’Reilly Factor, guest Charles Barron, a New York City councilman, had revealed the “hidden agenda” behind the current immigration debate, which, O’Reilly said, was “to wipe out ‘white privilege’ and to have the browning of America.” O’Reilly suggested that this “hidden agenda” included plans to let “people who live in the Caribbean, people who live in Africa and Asia … walk in and become citizens immediately.”

* In a February 27, 2006, conversation with a caller about the disproportionately few jobs and contracts that have gone to locals in the rebuilding of New Orleans, O’Reilly said: “[T]he homies, you know … I mean, they’re just not going to get the job.”
* On the September 13, 2005, broadcast of The Radio Factor, O’Reilly claimed that “many of the poor in New Orleans” did not evacuate the city before Hurricane Katrina because “[t]hey were drug-addicted” and “weren’t going to get turned off from their source.” O’Reilly added, “They were thugs.”

Hilzoy compared O’Reilly’s comments from this week to Don Imus’ infamous remarks about the Rutgers basketball team and questions why O’Reilly is still on the air.

It’s not an unreasonable question.

Furthermore, if he had been in a white restaurant in an all-white suburb, and someone had yelled, “M-Fer, I want more iced teas” would he have found that worth mentioning on the air?

I think O’Reilly’s being surprised shows his ignorance pretty clearly. To those of us who’ve been in places with a lot of African Americans before it’s aggravating, but it also shows how easy it really is for people who haven’t been around African Americans too much to maintain this prejudice.

If O’Reilly wants to find people acting disgusting, he can watch his own behavior on his show or that of his fellow schlocky, white conservative pundits and casts on their shows, and see how they talk.

  • To those of us who’ve been in places with a lot of African Americans before it’s aggravating,

It’s aggravating, that is, that someone can have the prejudices O’Reilly has.

  • I’ve occasionally run into virulent bigots like O’Reilly; they’re the kind who, back in the eighties, argued that white control of South Africa was the only thing that kept that country from descending into savagery. I wonder what O’Reilly was saying back then on racial issues in general?

  • When will people stop acting like this guy is something special. Why would Sharpton be taking O’Reilly anywhere. His opinions mean next to nothing and he’s no kind of celebrity to “normal” people. Amazes me why anyone would even pay any attention to anything out of his mouth. Millions of witty intelligent people out there and someone slaps a camera on this guy. I’ve never even watch his show …ever. He means nothing to me. Why would he? To me O’Reilley’s is an auto parts store.

  • Oh, the big brave boy, to go eat in a “black restaurant”!

He’s a jackass in my book. Will he now be claiming he has friends who are black? Al really oughta’ choose his company with a little more discretion, particularly to EAT with and expose others to.

I am reminded of the dodo, GHW Bush, who, for some reason, went into a grocery store for a photo-op and was astonished at the price scanners there. He’d never seen one before. He’d probably never been in in a grocery store before, silver spoon up his behind and all.

  • I have already talked to a few good folks who are referring to “the shrill little man-cub from FraudNews” as being “Big Al’s pet white rat.” When I’ve asked them why they would say that, the answer is always the same:

“Because that’s why O’Reilly went to Harlem—to be on the wrong side of social misunderstanding and race-based slurs.”

In short—O’Reilly sat himself up to be the victim of racism—but it didn’t quite work out the way he wanted it to. He just wants to be Geraldo—and get smashed in the face with a folding chair or something to justify his “white defensiveness….”

  • No doubt he will soon be expounding more confidently on racial issues, due to his newly increased expertise on black folk.

Why do people listen to such an ignorant jackass?

  • O’Reilly’s attitude fits into the tradition of racism, fear, and hatred of ‘the other’ that flourished institutionally in the South and boiled under the surface in the North.

In my youth I lived in a small southern town where no blacks were ever seen downtown or on any of the streets where white people lived. The black school had no foundation, it was sided in corrugated sheet metal, and the ‘windows’ were corrugated fiberglass. It was miserable on hot or cold days. The barber handed out Klan literature. Nice people said the most ignorant things. One hot day a group of blacks tried to get into the ‘public’ pool. White people said, with all seriousness, that the color would wash off. Nicer people said, “Why would anyone want to stir up trouble?”

In some ways we’ve come a long distance, but it’s no bridge until you reach the other side.

  • Why is O’Reilly still on the air? Because he’s on Fox “News.” Fox “News” has no minimum standards to uphold. And O’Reilly has pretty good ratings. Obviously there’s a market for his nonsense.

Nothing that O’Reilly says or does should surprise us anymore.

    Bigotry? Check
    Ignorance? Check.
    Sexual harassment? Check.

Care to add to the list?

  • “I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it’s run by blacks” — Bill O’Reilly

This needs to be quoted, repeatedly.

  • Maybe O’Reilly is preparing to audition for the role of Archie Bunker in a new version of “All in the Family” and what he is quoted as saying here is just him reciting his lines (Yes, I am not being serious).

  • It’s a pity that he was surprised, but remember that he was actually trying to share this revelation with his audience — that it turns out well-off black people are just as civilized as well-off white people. And probably his audience didn’t know that, either, so it’s possible we should cut him a little slack in this instance. (Unless he is more subtly conniving than I think he is.)

  • Did he think he was paying these folks a compliment? Very, extremely without a doubt 100% RACIST!!

  • It might not have been quite so offensive if O’Reilly didn’t sound so surprised. — CB

Well, if I were O’Reilly, I’d be surprised if *anyone* was civil to me — black, white and green with pink spots. They probably restrained themselves because they recognised Sharpton 🙂

  • Bill is a Harvard grad. Surely, he had to be exposed to a variety of ethnic groups en masse in Cambridge and Boston. It’s really sad….but it should give pause to those who deride ‘affirmative action’ and the goal of creating a diverse learning environment in the schools. Bill O’s performance was absolutely shameful and he apparently doen’t recognize it.

  • I loved this part:

“They all watch The Factor. You know, when Sharpton and I walked in, it was like a big commotion and everything”.

O’Reilly’s self-importance and the delusions of granduer are just breathtaking. What a small and small-minded man.

  • i read your article..the things you have written sound very sincere and nice topics i am looking forward to its continuation.
